Which is better & more ahead of its time?
@MonsieurX: I can understand that about The Last of Us, but why would you say that about the first two Max Payne games?
The second one in particular featured great physics, photo-realistic textures (for its time), and the most excellent depiction of bullets ever seen in a videogame.
Max Payne 1 may have been a standard shooter with a great gimmick and an above average plot, but Max Payne 2 is simply a masterpiece. I'd definitely call it ahead of its time.
@Lulu_Lulu: Max Payne 2 did crazy ragdoll and environmental physics a year before Half Life 2.
It did cinematic slow-motion kill cams...possibly before anyone else.
It did bullet-time and slow-motion aiming before anyone else.
It introduced quite a few aspects that would become staples of the shooter industry.
@Planeforger:
Ragdoll Physics and Bullet Time are not staplse of the shooter industry..... the former is not an aspect of a game thats ahead of its time and the latter, cool as it was, is more like the game identity..... its not that other shooters couldn't do it but rather they just didn't want to.
Best part of Max Payne were the quotes...... he's a perpetual quote machine.
Max Payne 1 and 2 were ahead of their time. The Last of Us isn't ahead of its time but its storytelling is more polished than a lot of other games out there. Max Payne 3 sucks.
I haven't played the last of us so I can't really comment on that game but I have played max payne 2 and I wouldn't say it was ahead of it's time but overall it had good physics and really cool bullet time.
Max Payne 2 was the first game to use ragdoll physics. Stories of both Max 1 and 2 are unique. You don't see stuff like that in games everyday.
Don't forget max payne 3 was awesome as well.
Meh.
It was definitely the worst game in the series, with a really weak plot, a setting that was far more Tropa de Elite or Die Hard than it was noir, and way too many cutscenes getting in the way of the short fights.
I didn't hate it, but it felt like Max was shoehorned into someone else's game. They should have made that 'good cop' character the hero, and avoided all comparison to MP1 and 2.
I liked Last of Us better. Honestly.
Just because it's a funner game. I like the story and characters. The graphics are much better. It was more immerse. The gameplay and pacing is much better. I like the guns and how they shoot. Being that I'm a fan of Resident Evil 4 I like survival horror shooter mixes.
I really didn't get to into Max Payne. I just thought there was just too many cutscenes and the gameplay just fell flat. Just felt like another third person shooter. I don't care for Max Payne.

Yeah I have a special place in my heart for both games especially the first one I just wish we get another Max Payne game set in New York that would be so cool.

Agreed

And the funny thing is, I never finish Max Payne 3 because I got bored from that game. It felt like the weakest Max Payne 3 to me.
I agree. Neither were ahead of their time. The Last of Us has incredible detail to the story, graphics, character development, etc. Max Payne really doesn't compare.
@Planeforger:
It takes alil more than graphics for a game to be ahead of its time.......
Max Payne 2 was pretty but its not like it was the only one.
I really didn't get to into Max Payne. I just thought there was just too many cutscenes
Ummm, you do know your avatar is from mgs right?
As far as which is the better game? It's hard to compare a series to a single game. Although if we are comparing the Original MP versus TLoU, then The Last of Us wins for me. Mainly because it's story was a little better. Other than that it was just Uncharted meets the Walking Dead.
Neither game was really ahead of it's time.
@srebmunahcnub: Too many cutscenes in a story I just didn't care about with characters I don't care about. I felt like I was in another generic action film staring Liam Neison punching stuff.

You are talking about Max Payne 3, which is not even a real Max Payne game.
@Cloud_imperium:
Either way I was impressed by Rockstar...... I was expecting much worse.
Haha
