Hard to choose. Doom 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Perfect Dark... they're all contenders.

#6 Posted by Fezzinator101 (221 posts) -

DOOM.

#9 Posted by Gorkface (145 posts) -

Quake2, Counter Strike, Unreal, Starwars Jedi Outcast, Goldeneye, Resistance Fall Of Man, Battlefield Bad Company2, Medal Of Honour-

All genre advancing titles, each one was my favorite when it came out.

Of the Classic Games, I have to go with "DOOM".

#11 Posted by sukraj (21902 posts) -

Doom

#12 Posted by senseless_dj (38 posts) -

Half-Life 1,2 +MODS, Doom 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake 3 Arena, UT, CS, MOH, COD1.

Doom was fun but when goldeneye came out my friends and i would get off the school bus and run over and play for hours every. I still cherish those moments. 4 players facuilty always a good time. Goldeneye the best ever

Perfect Dark on the N64, still my favourite game ever, and that's not nostalgia talking, as I still play PD regularly (not for a few days now, though, I'm currently loving Halo 4). I have the XBox 360 port of PD, but I prefer the N64 version, as (to me) most of the changes are for the worst, sadly.

Best Classic? Classic is a bit broad. . . . but here is my list.

Wolfenstein 3D ( the Grand Daddy of them all. Catacomb came out first, but was more magic based, also made by id.)

Doom (another original and pushed the envelope)

Spear of Destiny (need I say more)

Blake Stone: ALiens of Gold ( a personal fav of mine)

Those are the best CLASSIC FPS, now on to other awesome ones.

Goldeneye

Perfect Dark

Half Life

Half Life 2

Thief

Crysis

Crysis 2

Far Cry (the first one)

Doom 3

Aliens vs. Predator

The Original Halo's, CoD's and MOH's were fun, but then. . . well the hype machine has made them what they are now. I dodn't include the BF series because the online play aspect changes the whole dynaimics of a tru FPS. I feel the best FPS games made are the ones that you can play alone in a dark room with either a really good sound system or headphones.

Good Topic, can be argued forever!

Return to Castle Wolfenstein (PC 2001)

nothing else even comes close and is still the best FPS game ever.

Half Life, Red Faction 1, UT

#19 Posted by moltensquirrel (3 posts) -
Plot driven has to be half life. Multiplayer . . . . Quake 3
#20 Posted by BarbaricAvatar (977 posts) -

Unreal 1.

Quake was really good the gameplay was so deep and the gap between good and bad players was enourmous. Now they tend to cater to noobs and any shcmuck can hang with a pro atleast a little these days.

On an other theme i put my first game i played and i also will put it here, it is Medal of Honor:Underground. Personally i don't think it's classic but from what i see here some people call FinalFantasy X a classic game so my choice should look like a Mummy in comparision

I think that quake and counter strike were the best fps of the old days.
#25 Posted by kibeth (40 posts) -

Red Faction 1, in 2001 on PC, by a long shot. Tunneling through maps, creating your own maps, it was the best out there. Battlefield 2 is the classic of modern military shooters, and that thing had the best mods, Project Reality Mod in particular.

#26 Posted by sukraj (21902 posts) -

Doom

#27 Posted by blakedaking (3 posts) -
Goldeneye or original Counter Strike
#28 Posted by ssj3tyler (3 posts) -
Perfect Dark and 007 Goldeneye were the best shooters ever and they came out for N64
#29 Posted by Daywalk3r7 (6 posts) -
Doom and Half-life. I can't really say which one I like more.

#35 Posted by blackjoann (35 posts) -

#36 Posted by olleost (74 posts) -

Doom, back in 1993. It was the game that started the fps-genre. And that experience got me to sell my beloved Amiga 1200 for a brand new pc. With 4MB ram...

#37 Posted by charlesnitrotek (87 posts) -

counter strike. doom, red faction, far cry, call of duty...

#38 Posted by PokeCrysis (44 posts) -
I know everybody around here will say doom, but I'm going to have to go with Duke Nukem' 3D just because it was the first FPS game I ever played, also you could carry 16 weapons at once. So instant win.
#39 Posted by outworld222 (2367 posts) -

I think it's this.

#40 Posted by luckykoopsie (320 posts) -

outworld222

#41 Posted by petjax (6 posts) -

#42 Posted by RiskyyBusiness (2 posts) -
For me, the classics are: Doom, Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Duke Nukem 3D, and Halo: Combat Evolved. I had/have always enjoyed playing those games.
#43 Posted by MrMan2000 (15 posts) -
It's just personal, not saying these are the best but the ones I enjoyed / played the most: 1. Goldeneye 64 2. Halo 3. Halflife Each, for me, was ground-breaking and innovative. I've played a lot of enjoyable FPSers since, but none that quite captured my attention as these did.
#44 Posted by GeneralMufinMan (368 posts) -

Half-Life, accept no substitues :)

#45 Posted by GamerNerdTalk (303 posts) -

I want to say Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite. Probably Infinite, I just loved the colour scheme.

#46 Posted by Dexter-010 (508 posts) -
Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes
#47 Posted by quakke (166 posts) -

Quite funny thread since the answers really are bound to be Doom or Wolfenstein.

I say both.

Doom

Wolfenstein
