I was thinking earlier today, would it be better if some triple A games went episodic? I really liked how Resident Evil Revelations 2 is episodic and I can complete each episode in one or two sittings and okay something else during the week.

I was thinking that maybe a game like Splinter Cell or Hitman would work via episodic distribution. Like with Splinter Cell, every month you would get, one chapter from the main story and two to three side missions.

Or with Hitman every week you would get a different contract to take care of. Like the pre-order sniper level from Hitman Absolution.

Or even Battlefield Hardline, pay €60 and get the full multiplayer, and every month you get a new episode from the single player and playing the single player episodes would have XP for in the multiplayer side of things.

Your thoughts?

I hate games being episodic, it takes so long for the next episode I've lost interest by the time its released.

It could work for some games, but they'd have to be smart about the release schedule. And be really good at creating choices that impact future episodes in unique ways.

Well personally I'd rather just get the whole game upfront at once. I waited and got Resident Evil: Revelations 2 all at once on disc.

Not a fan of episodic formats. I don't enjoy waiting for months for the next portion of the game to come out. I end up waiting until all episodes are out to play it.

For ****'s sake. Why does anyone like the idea of episodes? Games are expensive enough as is. They could be even more expensive with episodes, and you know you're not buying a full game when you get an episode. I want a whole game when I buy one. There is nothing wrong with releasing a game all at once. Hell, they've been doing it for decades.

I could see more AAA games doing this.

For example, rather than releasing a Call of Duty game every year, Activision could just release a 1-2 hour episode every month, every year.

Make it a $10 per month subscription (with ongoing multiplayer support), and millions of people would easy spend $120+ per year on it.

Meanwhile, I don't hate episodic gaming.

Long development times can be lethal for smaller companies, whereas releasing games in portions means a more constant source of income, and keeping everyone on staff constantly working on the next project.

Episodic content only works if it's designed to be episodic.

Telltale games work well because each episode is a self containing story with an arching story that connects them together. If you get a story that is supposed to be 10 hours long and just split it into 5 2 hour long segments then that would kill the pacing.

Id argue AAA needs to lower its price and focus on what they do best (Eg if its bf or cod stay mp only, if its far cry stay sp only) and cost 40 bucks or so and if it is indie then do episodes but do them like revelations not every 3 months or so.

No, AAA games should not go episodic.

Episodic games are not easy to make and would in most cases ruin the immersion.

Telltale is always on the line between working and not working and it would not take them much to step over it and it will become a non-working element.

Useless the game is designed to me episodic.
otherwise, it's just doesn't right.

For the god sake, I think many company will overuse this method, like EA.

At some point,
Episodic is just a gimmicky thing, making you feel better to pay more.
Company like EA will keep the episode come, I know they would.

Hitman came in chapter. If you play on chapter each week, it's just the same thing as "Episodic"

Each Episode is just a chapter, which is already included in "Traditional games"
the game company be like "Oh, so they finally realize DLC is piece of shit. We have to find a new way to rob their money!"
"So we lower the starting price of the game, the
