Poll Selling alot vs Winning awards , which is better? (20 votes)

Selling alot 40%
Winning many awards 10%
Both 15%
Non 35%

A lot of mainstream video games and indie games have been created over the years and some have sold much more than others and some have won more awards than others. I have also noticed over the years that the sales don't really determine the how many awards the game will receive.

For example there are games like GTA 5 and The Last Of Us, GTA 5 sold more but received less awards than The Last Of Us while The Last Of Us sold less but received more awards than GTA 5 and this doesn't only happen with games but also with other forms of entertainment and I wanted to know what some of you think, is winning a lot of awards better or is selling a lot( copies and downloads) better.

Sadly, much like movies, the really interesting stuff from a critical standpoint isn't necessarily the stuff that sells the most. Avatar was a shit story, but it was a staggering popular movie. Some games/movies/tv shows are specifically designed for mass market appeal, and that typically means dumbed down stories or gameplay.

Neither... Crappy games can get away with both.

Selling a lot:

  1. Money to make sequel
  2. Who wants to play a game that'll be dead in 4-6 months aka Killzone 2
  3. Rather play against many people than the same 8-20 ppl like in mmos

I never base the games I like over whether or not it sells or wins awards. For example, BioShock Infinite won a few awards, but didn't sell as well as its competition either. Does that make it a bad game compared to, say, The Last of Us, which received a ton of awards and sold quite decently? I don't think so, as it's one of my favorite games alongside The Last of Us. I just don't think sales or awards should factor into the game's overall quality.

Well it lost heavily to games like Last of Us and GTA V. Even Link between worlds won on this site

I gotta go with both on this one. Who wouldn't want their game to be both critically praised and sell a lot?

Getting a bit ahead of ourselves aren't we.... You shouldn't be so pressumptious. Even if that were the case I don't make up dumb excuses for the many games I do like, I simply talk about flaws and fanboys just can't handle it their beloved games might have issues.... Especially where gameplay is concerned.

Both selling alot and winning awards rely on each other, so I say both are important.

If a game is winning awards, they obviously sold a lot because a lot of people must have played the game to have nominated it for an award.

But, I think winning awards is ultimately better because it shows that there is something in the game that sets it apart from other games, whether it's an awesome story or unique gameplay.

On the other hand, selling a lot doesn't necessarily mean the game is really good. For example a game could have got a lot of hype, so a lot of people bought it, but ended up being sucky.

If I made a game I think I'd rather it sell a lot.

I find gaming journalism in its entirety to be a joke. So many "highly praised" games have come and gone, and been forgotten about that it just makes me think so much of it is about hype in the moment.

I'd rather find my game at the top of a "User's Choice" award 10+ years after it released.

@Lulu_Lulu: Liking a game already gives you a ton of excuses to call it a good game, regardless of its quality. Pointing out the flaws in a game is easy. It's the ability to overlook them that allows them to be liked, since no game is perfect by any means.

they both help out quite a lot. But I prefer selling more copies getting more Fans.

Because you have games like The last of us which wins ungodly amount of rewards. ( my opinion it was not a good game if you played uncharted. it's basically a reskinned with the same animations and a very predictable storyline as well has having some pretty dull characters.) I don't know games that get rewards always little iffy. I would much rather play the games I don't get rewards because they are going to be more fun and they are not super mainstream.

I think of those two are different. It wrong to say they are the same thing since there can be poor game play that is unique.

Good... You acknowledge the flaws are there.... So don't expect me to stop anytime soon... :p

@Tonyx429

I think that makes you a "novelist".

Not really sure, I haven't heard that word in enough contexts to say If I'm using it properly. Anyway there a but load of Unique gameplay experience in the indie scene....
