You know, games made to scare surely have changed a lot over the years. What would have been scary back then really isn't as scary as it used to be, thanks to games like Left 4 Dead, which, although I never played it, sure looks scary enough as it is just looking at the screenshots.

When I think about it, I wonder what you gamers and game collectors used to see as scary back in the younger days of gaming, when things were simpler unlike today. I would tell you mine, but I don't recall playing anything like that in my younger years.

Of course, I scare easy at times, so no wonder.

I don't think I played a truly scare-worthy game till PS1. I had to think about this a bit, but Splatterhouse 3 on the Genesis. No it wasn't exactly scary, but I remember the first stage having some sort of a time limit (which freak me regardless of the genre). If you didn't make it in time there was some kind of disturbing scene involving the main character's girlfriend. All this together with the horror theme of the game, and some pretty disgusting lookin' enemies and bosses, gave me the semi-creeps. When I was 10 or 11 that is : )

Dead of the Brain I & II - survival-horror adventure games available for PC and PC-Engine.

Like many other adventure games, they've stood the test of time remarkably well though.

I was one of those kids in the 80s and 90s who's parents didn't care what we watched as long as it wasn't a porno. So I saw a lot of gory horror films as a kid. Nothing a video could do could scare me. So I couldn't really say which ones were the scariest. Although which ones I enjoyed the most, I can do that: -Carrier (Dreamcast) -Castlevania Series (NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, GBA) -Darkwatch (XBox, PS2) -Diablo 1 & 2 (PC, PS1) -Doom 1 & 2 (PC, SNES, PS1, Saturn, and many more) -Frankenstein: The Monster Returns (NES) -House of the Dead 1 & 2 (Saturn, Dreamcast) -Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (PS1, Dreamcast) -Medievil 1 & 2 (PS1) -Resident Evil Series (PS1, PS2, N64, Gamecube, Dreamcast) -Splatterhouse Series (TG16, Genesis)

On the NES, Uninvited had a pretty creepy storyline and some eerie stuff in it. Friday the 13th shook a couple of jumps out of me at times too. On the SNES, really the only "scary" game I ever played on it was Clock Tower (yes, the Japanese game) and all I have to say is they did a great job at successfully executing horror elements in it.

I actually have not played any scary games even though they might be. They're just games.

The only thing scary about old games is how you couldnt save, when I'd get to the last level of the original Alex Kidd and i'd have one life left and im going through a castle loaded with deadly traps. Its pretty hard to get to that last level and when I was in that situation my head would have exploded from frustration if i died and got gameover. Which is what happened, multiple times.

You can actually continue in Alex Kidd in Miracle World. In order to do so you need to have a certain amount of money and then hold UP on the D-Pad and push button 2 eight times.

The thing is, video games never really had the power to be scary until game makers had the technology to make them more realistic and in-your-face.

Resident Evil 3 Nemesis kinda scared me back then a little. Mainly because you never knew just when the hell Nemesis was going to jump out at you.
