Since I can't find my n64 controller pak, I figured I'd do a superman 64 marathon, meaning I'd finish the game in one sitting. Changed my mind and shut off the console by level 2. :/

For the sake not separating my games into TOO many genres, i count Space-pilot games -such as Freelancer, X, Jedi Starfighter- as 'Flight' games and keep them with other titles such as Hawx, Ace Combat and Jane's USAF (system-separated).

Should the two genres be defined completely separately, or could one argue that they all involve piloting a flying vehicle of some form (regardless of simulation/arcade aspects)?

Much like Gran Turismo can be lumped in with Wipeout as both ultimately being racing games.

Thoughts?

Emerald_Warrior

I'm never picky about how genres are classified. If someone calls The Legend of Zelda an RPG, Contra a shmup, etc it doesn't bug me any. For me RPGs are RPGs, not JRPGs, WRPGs, SRPGs, action-RPGs, MMORPGs.

(yes, subgenres are clearly different but I'm thinking of examples like in other threads where someone lists Secret of Mana as a favorite RPG and someone quotes the post to argue about it being one)

Without genres and subgenres society will crumble. It will be mass chaos!!! Water turning to blood. Cats barking! MONKEY DRIVING CARS!!! OH THE HUMANITY!!!

After not so much as a snide remark regarding this post, I have decided that you all need to watch Grandma's Boy. Freaking hilarious movie, and it's about gaming.

The comment looked like a Ghostbusters quote, but then picture made no sense.

At the Oval Office, I was taking a nap one day and I Imagined a HD port of Hard Driving on a console, and it did NOT suck. It was soooooo scary.

Just shows you have to periodically check sellers even if you're not intending to buy during a time-frame.

Spotted an extremely rare game on a a usually-reliable seller's page for £3. I couldn't get to the 'buy' button fast enough!

More details when it comes. :D

I just started thinking about this:

If and when gaming does go fully digital, that's great for us collectors! That means the majority of the public will start thinking of discs like floppy disks, something that's just archaic and to be laughed at. So hopefully that means it become cheaper for us collectors to get the physical discs that are around!

#307 Posted by Dudersaper (32950 posts) -
I highly doubt it would go that way, I think it might even make them go even higher in price. Less physical copies might lead to more demand which might just spike prices.

I didn't mean new games. I meant all the games that the average person will get rid of because they're upgrading. Same thing happened to VHS, and is happening to DVDs right now because of Blu-Ray.

Oh, well maybe. Hopefully :P

I just got my copy of Capcom Classics Mini Mix for GBA from eBay today.

When I tested it I was surprised at how well they ported Bionic Commando from NES. Most games have little differences in the way they feel when you play them, or a little different looking graphics; when ported to handheld. Bionic Commando felt just the like NES version though, and I've played the NES game A LOT.

Good job Capcom!

Blu-ray has yet to gain a significant market and has fell up and down lately. DVDs still bring in triple the revenue.

I'm talking about prices here. You used to buy DVDs for $20 a pop, now it's quite common to find them brand-new for $7.99, less than half the price they used to go for. While Blu-rays are still averaging around $20 a pop.

It depends on the budget I think in DVD's case. But I see what you;re saying. But that doesn't transition to well to games though.

Can we really not think of anything to talk about around here? It seems like every single thread out there is a "What the best", "What's the worst", and "List this" thread. Which then turns into A48 and his multiple accounts telling everyone why they're wrong and he's right and no one has any logic (according to A48). It's getting out of hand!

I went to GameStop the other day and this one certain employee just really got under my skin.

First when I walk in, he's talking to a customer about how stupid XBox is for back-peddaling on the DRM and used game stuff. I keep my opinion to myself, though.

I then go up to the counter and ask if either of the employees there had played Dragon's Dogma. They both say yes, so I ask them a simple question: "Is this game an RPG, or is it just an attack the bad-guys button-masher?" The aformentioned guy replies, "What do you mean?" So I clarify that I want something a little more in-depth than just a beat-up the bad guys game. He then looks all taken back and says, "Well you just mash the buttons in any video game, so I'm still not sure what you mean." The girl then turns around and says, "Yes, it's an RPG." And I distinctly got the feeling from that, that I wasn't alone in thinking the guy was being a douche.

So then I decide on Dragon's Dogma and I go to get rung up, and it's my favorite GS employee again. I give him the game, and he goes and switches the case out for one with a game. Before I leave, I open it up, as I always do, and I notice it doesn't have the book like the one I purposely grabbed off the shelf for the book. So I go back and point it out and ask if I could get the case that has the book. He looks at me and says, "What?" I tell him that's why I picked out that copy because I wanted the book. He says, "You don't need the book, it'll tell you what to do in the tutorial." I then finally get a little testy with the guy and tell him, "I want the damn book, because I paid for it, and that's reason enough." He then hands me the book and I walk out.

I really hope that guy gets fired soon. I know it doesn't seem like much, but he just pushed all my buttons.

While not one of the main reasons, the employees are partially why I dont shop at Gamestop anymore. The majority of Gamestop employees I dealt with were either douchy dudebro gamers that looked down on anything tht was not an FPS, Madden or Gears of War, or they were RPG snobs that felt it necessary to one up you on everything you said about a specific game, especially RPGs. I just got tired of the constant rudeness, disrespect and crappy customer service. Luckily I have many indo game shops near me to shop at instead :)

I couldn't find the Atari topic we had going a couple of months ago here.

Just came across this while looking for something else:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/154934708/In-re-Atari-Inc-NOTICE-OF-SUCCESSFUL-AND-BACK-UP-BIDDERS-WITH-RESPECT-TO-THE-AUCTIONS-OF-CERTAIN-OF-THE-DEBTORS%E2%80%99-ASSETS126013701588

A short list of who got what from the ruins of Atari. Looking forward to a new Total Annihilation (that isn't called Supreme Commander!) and a new Battlezone. Atari had obviously just been sitting on these franchises to prevent other people reviving them. I hate it when companies do that; don't buy the IP if you're not going to do anything with it!!

I did have a brief search for a similar THQ list, but no luck.

No matter how many times I have tried, I cannot freaking beat Tusk at the top of the temple in the 4th level of X-Men 2: The Clone Wars on Sega Genesis. The bastard cheats! I know I've hit him more than what's getting counted, but the hit-detection just on this particular boss is lousy! And it's right after you get Magneto as a playable character, so it's very disappointing.

I guess that means I'm gonna have to break down and use the power of the Game Genie.

I honestly think X-men 2 is pretty overrated and the main reason I dislike it is its murderous difficulty. I get games should be a challenge, but there's challenging and then there's cheap.

Also, from what I remember, the best character for that level is Wolverine

I'm at a loss for words as to when a PS2 platformer topic springs up, i never see "Tak and the Power of Juju" mentioned. It's no Ratchet & Clank or Psychonauts, but it's better than all the others i've played. It's top-notch 3D platforming, not too easy, tight controls, good voice-work, likeable characters and amusing dialogue with some genuine laugh-out-loud moments. All the ingredients that make a great platformer.

I haven't finished it yet, but if i had to score it right now i'd be tempted to give it 8.5.

The camera-rotation is a wee bit slow for my liking, the chicken suit glide is also too languid, and there's a tiny bit of back-tracking. But i'm really clutching at straws to find big faults with it.

NATHAN ANGRY!!!

I was playing Guitar Hero 5, which I recently picked up, then suddenly the freaking game froze! When I reset it, all my autosaves for Career mode were gone! But my created character and all of his unlocked gear wasn't, strangely enough. I don't know what happened!

I've only played a demo, but I remember thinking a) the graphics were amazing, and b) everything you mentioned regarding the controls and game/level design.

Having a bad game day where it seems everything's against me!

Started the evening with "X-Files Resist or Serve" and although i made some progress i got annoyed with a section that relies on cooperative AI and that part of the game is utterly broken so i kept losing the boss fight. (Jesus, Scully, at least run away or shoot back or something other than just stand there FFS!)

Then switched to "NFS: Hot Pursuit 2" to work on unlocking the remaining cars i need. When playing as the cops even though i was efficiently catching and pinning the other cars, the game was not registering that i'd stopped them and just had them slowly turn around and drive away again. So i kept running out of time and losing.

Next i put on "Tak and the Power of Juju" where i'm slowly getting through the section with the golden eggs. Reached egg 3 out of 4 on the upper level but kept getting caught out by the invincible chickens. Either i'd get the egg and the timer would run out and i wouldn't make it back through the door, or i'd make it through the door then be swamped by the chickens who'd suddenly appear from places where they weren't earlier. So i kept dropping the eggs and losing.

Annoying! I've given up and turned off, going to sit on the laptop with a Hidden Object game, but i bet that too will find a way of frustrating me tonight!

It's been quite a while since 3DS/Vita came out for DS/PSP to not be officially legacy by now. Did it take long for PS2/GC/Xbox/GBA? I'm pretty sure those were when I jointed in 08.

System Wars is primary decider for that. Back then GC, PS2, and whatever were talked about on Legacy and in fact, I think legacy was fused and did not have its own forum temporarily at that time. If we considered the DS/PSP/360/ps3/wii legacy now this forum would die in 10 minutes.

Of course I have rubbing alcohol. But I really didn't think that would do the 30 year old LCD screen any favors.

Writing on a screen would be the last thing on my mind if I worked at a store that put stickers in the dumbest places on EVERY other item lol. I believe CVS has a screen cleaner (like $40 though) that would be easier on the screen than rubbing alcohol, if you have the $40 that is.
