Do you need to play any of the Silent Hills in order to understand the story. Like do you need to play 1 before 2, 2 before 3, 3 before 4, all of them?

Having played 2 and partially 3, no, you don't need. I would recommend that you did, but you won't be completely clueless if you don't.

Silent Hill 1 is too damn expensive. :( Anyone know how much the story from 1 has to do with the future SH's?

Silent Hill 1 and Silent Hill 3 are directly connected.....to best understand the storyline of Silent Hill 3, you have to have finished Silent Hill 1 with either the "Good+" or "Good" ending. The upcoming Silent Hill Origins is also related to the storyline of SH1 and SH3.

Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 4 are not directly connected with any other game in the series, SH2 and SH4 are both their own seperate storylines with completely new characters.

Well, the storyline of Silent Hill 3 is a continuation of the storyline of Silent Hill 1, where SH3 takes places 17 years after the events of SH1 and follows up on it.

Silent Hill Origins is an upcoming prequel to the events of Silent Hill 1.

Exactly. There are small refrences in SH4 to SH2... like the mail box sign and the name of the main baddie in SH4. But they're not connected...
