My PS2 Phat will not read DVDs or PS2 games. It can still play PS1 games and Audio CDs just fine. I tried cleaning the discs and the system but it still doesn't work. My PS2 games play fine on my friend's PS2. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you've got the dreaded disc read error. You can try the things presented in the following topic: http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=23572005 But you're probably going to end up having to buy a new one. Sorry.

Darn! Looks like I'll be saving up for a PS2 Slim then. Are the PS2 Slims reliable?

Yes. Even newer versions of the older-model PS2 are fairly reliable. You should be fine.

Yeah they're reliable. I had the dreaded disc read error with my fatty for 2 years. After that much time doing the temporary fixes it finally died out on me. So I switched to the Slim and haven't had a problem reading discs since.

you could try contacting sony, they may be able to repair it for you, or get you a new one.....

Meh, I've had this disk reading problem for years, mainly because I'm using a Japanese PS2 to play American DVDs.

But after several resets, they eventually work.

I turn mine on the side or flip it all the way over and that works for just about every game, unfortunately one of the only one's that it absolutely will not play is God of War 2.

What ever you do, I highly stress that you don't fiddle with the DVD "laser adjustments". Check Wikipedia.com, you can find a list of PS2 games that are "CD format".

At one time my PS2 wouldn't read God of War so I opened the sucker up and did the laser adjustments and its been working fine since.
