My my my ! I went shopping for some new games and was astonished to see how much they are asking now ... 2 years ago it used to be 59,99$ CAD then it went to 64,99$CAD a year ago and now it is 79,99$CAD ... I'm like no f*king way I'm going to pay that much.

I think I'm going to play them years after the release or never bother

That's about $65 USD, which is about $5 more than modern console games go for in the US. You were paying 60 CAD two years ago? That's about $50 USD and here it's been a loooooong time since new games were that cheap.

@Byshop: But however, buying the standard digital version game will only cost you $59.99 but buying physical copy will cost like $65 dollars which I tend to buy my games digital for the most parts on Xbox One/PS4.

Well that's because our dollar has fallen below parity with the US dollar. I don't know where you live or where you're buying your games but here in Ontario at my local Best Buy and Wal-mart games are going for $69.99 with some at $64.99.

Hmm. Seems pretty pricy although that could account for how taxes work over there. Here we pay 13% so a $70 game here ends up being close to $80 after purchase. Games were cheaper here awhile ago because the Canadian dollar was pretty much on par to the US dollar so a $60 game there was $60 here as well. Our dollar has been below that for awhile but it took a bit of time for goods to reflect that. Currently our dollar is at around 81 cents to the US dollar, games didn't actually increase in price per se it's just that for us the cost of goods in general has risen because of the current value of our dollar.

Son of a .... Yeah just check here as well and the upcoming new games are priced at $79.99. Damn. Looks like it'll take me longer to get all the games that I was planning on getting. Could be a good thing though, my backlog is getting pretty big.

Most games in Canada are selling for $69.99 at release now. Used to be 59.99, but that slumping dollar.

Gaming is the cheapest it's ever been

Anyone with a problem needs to take up a new hobby, maybe reading because it's not much for a library card these days.

I'm a Steam addict. I guess it's been a while since I've been to the game store.

Oh yeah, duh. I totally forgot about exchange rates. I guess if the prices are set in Yen or USD then the relative value of the currency would be a factor.

COD is a separate issue since to get the "full" game you have to drop 60 USD for the base game and another 40 for the full DLC package, effectively making the game 100 USD which bugs me.

Lame that Assassin's Creed is that much in Canada. Ubisoft Montreal and Quebec are listed among the developers for that series. Lame that you can't get a local discount.

@Byshop: yeah, Ubisoft Québec is very close to where I'm working. I remember for one of their game ( that I can't remeber ) they did an outdoor event where they projected the game on one of the wall of their building, it was pretty neat.

It fluctuates. I remember when the PS3 first came out games were $69.99 and went down to $59.99 a year or 2 later. If our dollar sucks then prices will go up. I remember seeing N64 games for over 100 bucks at Wal-Mart when I was a kid. I'm in Australia now and holy crap the prices stink. Then again the prices stink for everything, it's 4 dollars for a fucking coke. I know I won't be spending more than 60 bucks on games though so if it's $79.99 when I come back I'll just be catching up on my backlog.

Come to South Africa, where its cheaper to buy a digital copy, but then you have to wait 2 weeks till its finally downloaded. Not to mention the small fortune you have cough up for that internet you're using to download it with. Then you have to worry about whether you're going to have enough data to actually download the damn game in the first place. So for us, its hard copy only. Sigh, the life of a 3 world country gamer - and yes, I might have a pet lion called Simba in my back yard ;)

@SOedipus: I didn't know PS3 price were that high on lunch but I do remember the system being very expensive. As for N64 I do remember some games like Star Fox, Pokémon something and one of the Zelda being close 100$ because they had an add-on in te box ( rumble for Star Fox, a mic for Pokémon and memory expension for Zelda ).

Ya almost stopped buying physical boxed copies for that very reason. Here in Canada every game's like $80 no matter how much content or the quality of the game. So I generally buy digital and during sales. Have to say since moving to pc I've been able to play far more games then I used too and ones I wouldn't even normally look at because of the awesome sales pc stores do.

It sucks for new releases and those special editions can get up to $100 USD. I've been getting pre-owned pretty cheap but if you want a brand new game, you gotta shell it out.

I used to pay 900 - 950 Mex pesos for a game last year, now it´s 1,200 Mex pesos for most new games, but of course at 15.5 pesos per US dollar the price of game has "risen".

Good thing I don't play on current gen consoles! I'd be broke if I had one. I just got upgrades for my PC so now I'll be able to run modern games, but I might have to download them off TPB or KAT! I never usually do that anyway.

So don't buy new games if they're that expensive. It's not that hard to tell companies to **** off and not give them full retail price. That's how the market works buddy. I might be blunt, but that's just how things are

This isn't about companies raising prices per se and if your going to be a dick about something then be prepared to get called out on it. That's also how the world works buddy. Deal with it.

Well we know the cost to make games is going up. So there need to some way to get more from the games. With many gamers at war against DLC and the like, it is only natural that the base cost increase.
