Phil Harrison: "From a studios perspective, we are investing, I believe, a billion dollars for content development just for games, which is more than weve ever spent in our history. Were starting new studios. Weve started studios in London [and] in Los Angeles. Were growing our organization.

Not sure they go up that high. Not to many games I know of go to $100 million a pop.

But probably the 15 exclusives they were talking are part of this, considering start-up costs to new studios. They're not just using the money for games alone, but for starting up internal studios as well. So that's a good thing.

So Microsoft is just now lying about everything? No matter what they announce, is a lie/bs?  Now they're even just straight up lying about financial information and investments to everyone around the world including their shareholders, huh? Is that all some of you guys have left?

Did they put a timeframe on that number?  Because if not, I don't see what makes this news-worthy.  I'm sure Sony and Nintendo will be spending equal amounts over the comming years.

Nice. I'm really looking forward to seeing their games at E3, both for new and existing franchises. Should be a great show. :D

Its a big number but what is important is how the money is spent. I think money spent on temporarily exclusive DLC is money pissed away because with the possible exception of the GTA exclusive DLC (unusually meaty DLC announced before it was widely understood such exclusivity is temporary) I've seen little evidence that such DLC affects purchasing (audience tastes seem to impact which game sells better on X platform more than anything). Money spent on studios could be money better spent, but only if MS doesn't spend like a drunken sailor (the $375,000,000 they spent for Rare was insane given that the once respected, prolific Rare made a whopping one game in the GC era and that game wasn't particularly memorable).

Its worth keeping in mind that Phil Harrison played a large role in the building of Sony's first and second party studios and he might make a positive difference at Microsoft in terms of developer relations and its attitude towards game development. In recent years it seems like MS's current leadership has become determined to follow in Nintendo's footsteps (extremely conservative in terms of core games, experimenting only in the casual arena). Nintendo's strategy makes sense for Nintendo given the nature of their audience (core gamers fixated on a handful of franchises and in the recent past casuals) but makes no sense for MS because their core gamers aren't franchise fixated (Xbox owners don't just buy Halo, they buy lots of shooters). Whoever was involved in the decision to cut freaking Bungie loose because they wanted to take a break from Halo and make an original game (a shooter MMO which would have ben a nice exclusive for the online required Xbox 1) has no place in MS or anywhere else in the game industry.

That statement doesn't say much. I expect their peers (Ninty and Sony) to spend equal amounts or more for the coming years. It costs to build up studios, maintain, or keep IPs going. I'm glad to see they've placed some money behind it, but this doesn't mean much at all. Unless they mean during the first year alone.

No need to dismiss this. MS didnt hire Phil Harrison just to be the bearer of bad news. The guy is largely responsible for cultivating first party studios at Sony. Media Molecule, Guerrilla Games, Naughty Dog, Evolution Studios and perhaps even Sucker Punch all had his backing and ended up getting bought by Sony. MS is creating new studios and funding new exclusives instead of just buying out timed exclusitivity.

I told you guys that MS would be bringing the exclusives next gen and I was laughed at. But now they have announced 15 exclusives to be released within a year of Xbone's release. They have confirmed they are investing a billion dollars in game development. Yes, some might be Kinect exclusives but if we look at whats rumored to be in development for Xbone, the list is pretty damn solid.

  • New game from PGR devs.
  • New Forza
  • New Halo
  • New game from Fable devs.
  • New game from Respawn Entertainment
  • New game from Remedy
  • New game from Rare
  • New game from Crtyek (Ryse)
  • New game from Black Tusk
