Poll Ok who misses some great WWII FPS AAA-Title ? (13 votes)

There were so many WWII-Shooters i still have enough of them and feel fine with high-tech gadgets. 31%
There are so many future/scifi related FPS...i want back WWII again!!! 77%

i remember a time when everyone, including myself, was just tired of running and gunning around killing nazis with old rusty weapons in old german villages during WWII, coz there were really enough FPS with that theme

well now after all those scifi/future FPS in recent years I really miss a great AAA WWII based shooter again with those old german villages and those old rusty weapons and a shitload of oldstyle nazis but packed into really spectacular graphics

..please just not all those scifi weapons and hi-tech stuff along with exo-armory and all that shit again, i think after the latest future-related shooter COD:ADVANCED WARFARE we really need some rest from any kind of high-tech weapons.

aliens.....and u sure thats exactly what we dont already have enough ?

anyway, replaying some old WWII title is not the same as playing some AAA WWII title with spectactular graphics from today...if there would be any (you cannot count ENEMY FRONT, which in my opinion is still a good game, but no AAA title and especially no eye-candy graphics)

i am just tired of high tech weapons, i am tired of aliens and even more tired of goddamn robots, i am tired of bigass skyscrapers...

i think itll be great to have those old towns, beautiful green landscapes with a blue river here and there...probably some smoking destroyed ruins or burnt out tanks once a while, along with all those good ole WWII vehicles, weapons, uniforms etc. etc...with graphics as you have it with the latest COD game

i agree that would be something new, but it has to be packed into something...how should i say...something original ? when it comes to WWI people still dont know as much about it as they know about WWII, plus WWII is a theme where the emotions of people still get going..at least more than with WWI or any other fictive war story.

WWI is not an easy task to make a game out of, just remember how many WWI games there actually are ? i just remember one FPS in WWI that was called "IRON STORM" and some third person game i dont remember the title

when i think of how successful the SNIPER ELITE series already got i think there are still enough gamers who like the WWII theme to return more often...expecially in form of an FPS AAA title with a budget like the latest COD had.

I would like another WWII shooter, but I don't long for it. I played MOHAA and the first Call of Duty so much. Especially MOHAA made a big impression. It was one of the first shooters I played and I remember the levels being very varied, both visually and gameplay wise. And although there really wasn't any story to speak of, it took you to all those locations you knew from the movies and it somehow really impressed me. It felt like a believable depiction of WWII (as suggested by the movies, of course). I still listen to the soundtrack from time to time.

I was never really all that into them myself with the exception of some of the more fantasy ones like Wolfenstein. I didn't really get into the Call of Duty games until Modern Warfare hit and World at War was probably my least favourite one from MW and up.

when i remember all the WWII shooters i played, there were far more i enjoyed than i enjoyed any fantasy/future related shooter from these days, WOLFENSTEIN THE NEW ORDER is an exception of course

i dont remember much sequences from the latest cod series, except the airport civillians massacre done by those russians in cod:modern warfare 2 which is legendary, but i still have many sequences in my head from the older days of WWII shooters, like the D-Day mission from COD 2 or MOH:AIRBORNE....the last one i probably play again soon coz i enjoyed it that much

I wouldn't mind seeing another WWII FPS. But one that isn't like CoD or MoH, something more like Brothers in Arms with a story that is about the soldiers.

i loved the grade of brutality and the tactic/strategic gameplay, a pretty refreshing take on the ww2 shooter genre, i wouldnt mind a remake or a sequel of brothers in arms as well

i'd like an open world WW2 game, i liked the old COD WW2 games but they were linear as hell and had no replay value.

Even if it didn't follow history exactly it'd be more fun to have a non linear ww2 experience then a scripted one like in the past.

I was just thinking a few weeks ago that the next battlefield should be going back to WWII. I think a realistic, next gen, WWII game would be great to play.

I like WW2 shooters, but here's the problem with historical games from a business standpoint: there is no room for incremental expansion. There were only so many guns, so many places the war was fought in, so many vehicles and so on. You play a new WW2 game and you're gonna be using your Mosin Nagant, your MP-40, your Sturmgewehr, your M1 Garand, after a while you've seen them all a thousand times. With sci-fi and modern warfare settings, on the other hand, the sky's the limit: developers can get creative with new made up gadgets, weapons and situations and keep games fresh for longer.

@crimsonbrute: Developers said they never made a WW1 game as WW1 was basically trench warfare and would be boring as hell.

I'd love some new WW2 games though. Even if they aren't historically accurate. They could have a WW2 setting but make stuff up to create an original story.

I have all the COD games on PS2 and Xbox 360. Some old Medal Of Honour amd Brothers in Arms too. Well, their my dads, but i play them. lol =D

Not really, WW2 had a lot of very interesting gadgets, weapons and vehicles. Devs just need to actually do some research. Also the weapons and weapons in WW2 actually differ a lot more from one to the other.

Also the theaters, you could fight from beaches, fields and cities of Western Europe, to the steppes of Russia, to the mountains of Italy and Norway, to the deserts of North Africa, to the tropical islands of the Pacific. You could fight in massive air battles escorting bombers, carrier launched strikes, ship to ship engagements, naval landings, huge tank battles, tense guerrilla fighting in cities, paratrooper actions etc. etc. etc. etc.

If you think WW2 doesn't offer enough, play Forgotten Hope 1 or 2.

That's not what I said though. I said that there is a limit to which you can innovate and expand in a historical setting. If you are into WW2 games, chances are you have already seen everything you mentioned, which is why people have gotten burned out on them and the genre has declined. What they could do would be to add an engaging plot, which is usually missing in this sort of games. That would probably bring people back.

@Black_Knight_00: Whatttt?? There are loads more things to see and do in WW2 games. All previous WW2 games seemed to follow the same pattern, settings and content. They missed out so many settings and scenarios from all around the world. From the fighting in Norway in the forests and mountains, to the air campaigns of the Battle Of Britain, campaigns in Burma and many more across the world. They can watch the millions of videos of actual soldiers incredible WW2 stories and use them for inspiration. WW2 games never featured much WW2 era tech either, they only featured a small amount and kept recycling it. There is so much cool WW2 tech that was never used in WW2 games.

It seems that after the latest Assassins Creed Unity trailer, the Assassins Creed franchise may well be going to dip its toe in the WW2 era. If the AC team do make an AC game set during WW2, you will see just how much cool stuff previous WW2 FPS's left out, as the AC devs love to add a deep level of historic detail to their AC titles.

The reason games went modern warfare and future warfare is because of the success of COD4 Modern Warfare. Other devs wanted to start cashing in on it. Like how Medal Of Honour Frontline started the trend of WW2 games. It isn't the WW2 ears fault, it is down to developers lack of imagination. Like how all the future warfare games all seem to be the same. They need some originality.

i dont see a bad thing with using old weapons over and over again, first of all its more realistic and second there is a certain feeling with handling such old weapons.

...no high-tech weapon can give you the feeling of a "marushin kar98k" when the empty shell ejcts itself with a "CLING!!!" flying over your head, knowing that it takes some time to reload until you can fire again, making you just feel as close to being a ww2 soldier in battle as no other future-related shooter can make you feel

I like them too, but most people got burned out on them, evidently. Sadly, offer is regulated by demand. As I said, maybe the genre will have a comeback moment in the future.

oh well there actually just was some slight comeback of the genre in form of "ENEMY FRONT", but that is no AAA title and got mediocre reviews,

the interesting part with ENEMY FRONT is the fact that many people thought very positive of playing a game being back in WWII old style again, so obviously far more people wish the theme to come back

In our terms yes, but companies need sales projections in the millions of copies before they commit to an investment. Evidently they are not seeing that at the moment.

that could be right but something has to happen, i mean they just cannot plan on continuing with high-tech-future-warfare COD-titles every year as well as they just cant carry the Assassins Creed franchise forever in the colonial-era

sometimes a franchise or a certain genre of games has to either move forward or backwards with its theme/era/time/story or start all over again, in case of FPS i dont really see no point in moving any further than they already did with TITANFALL and the latest COD regarding that high-tech-future warfare as well i dont see any point in keeping up with that theme, at least thats what i think, i just hope i will not have to fight wars in exo-suits, robots and rocketpacks (as much as i like those) within the next 5 years

probably its not such a bad idea to just dont make any new AAA-FPS within the next 2-3 years...but the next one is already coming...BF-HARDLINE...happily there are no robots in it

yeah, there is a reason why they never really made any shooters around WWI, and when then its only a shooter having WWI in an altered timeline, like IRON STORM, in that FPS you play in the 60s where WWI is still being fought but not like it was fought in the actual real timeline

if WWI would be as easy and interesting to make a game based on, there would be already as much as WWI shooters as you have with the WWII theme i guess

They get dull because you're limited right out the gate. If you want to tell a fictional story that could opens up a lot of doors...

Other than that, it's the same guns and battles. Note you can further improve on it but then it would be backed to the modern stuff where the playground is bigger.

I will admit that I would like to see a recent COD WWII game in the AW packaging as I was impressed with the improvements for this gen... but only ONE be all game. Lengthy campaign, fully improved and balanced multiplayer, and ZOMBIES!!!

In all honesty, I'd take another black ops before WWII

not really, i am talkin of good ole pure unaltered WWII action

we already have those alternate-history-scifi shooters as well

what we miss are those pure WWII shooters with fresh graphics and probably some fresh gameplay elements as well, WWII action with EVERYTHING destroyable or at least something like BROTHERS IN ARMS with tactic-elements etc.

Some really good WWI FPS ? and may I ask how a WWI based game can be great ? most of WWI took place with soldiers living in trenches while being bombed and gassed for months, not a lot of action if you ask me other than trying to take an enemy trench while being torn to pieces by machineguns while you are cutting barbed wire in no man´s land. Not a good theme IMHO. WWII still has some much better scenarios for many reasons even though many have already been covered previously by MOH and COD, WWII took place in many places and many conditions.

Maybe a good a new WWII based game could include parts of the different scenarios, like the war in the Pacific, battles in Europe, plane fights and submarine warfare. Imagine something like a mix of MOH Rising sun + COD WAW + MOH Frontline + a little Ace Combat but with Messerschmitts, Zeros, Mustangs n´so, bits and pieces from the different previous WWII games.

Now that´s the kind of game I would purchase in an eyeblink.

There's nothing wrong with WWII as a setting for a game. The approach they've taken in the past is what the problem is.

I can think of no nobler goal than killing Nazis and forcing back Empirical Japan.
