Whats up with everyone trying to get into the console/handheld business? First Ouya then the Steambox and now Nvidia. Now i understand they didnt get a single next gen contract or even the Wii U, but this just seems a bit useless. I do like the specs however.

From Gaf:

Shield Recap:

:: Named Shield (codenamed: Thor)
:: Runs on pure android (no bloat-ware or skins)
::Games are download from:"NVIDIA TegraZone" and "Google's app store"
:: No retail games
:: No exclusive games were announced yet.

:: Tegra 4 (72 cores)
:: Has a bloody heatstink of some sort in a portable
:: Most powerful mobile console (atleast that what he said)
:: It can play 4k videos and "drive" 4k TV sets (that what he said)

:: Shaped like a controller
:: 5-inch, 720p Retinal multitouch display with 294ppi pixel density
:: The 5 inch touchscreen has a customizable plate
:: Custom bass reflex system with tuned ports for sound.
:: Controls are all the controls a gamer would expect (pressure sesitve triggers, clickable sticks etc.)
:: Micro SD support.
:: Audio out, Hdmi Out, USB support.

:: Battery lasts from 5-10 hours while gaming or 24 hours of HD video playback (according to verge)
:: Can streamfrom PC(like WiiuTab from Wiiu), and then can stream that same image to your TV (PC streaming requires a router)
:: Could also to cloud gaming (much like any other mobile/tablet)
:: Does local multiplayer wireless.

::No price, storage announced
:: Coming out Q2

Impressive specs. Don't know if I'd be interested in yet another hand-held game system, though.

What's it supposed to cost, though? I can see this being an attractive mobile gaming solution as it eliminates the clumsy touchscreen controls mobile games have, but if this costs as much as a non-subsidized smartphone good luck getting this thing to take off.

not sure what to think, one one hand it'd be cool to have a STEAM gaming handheld device. on the other hand I already play those on PC, so if I wanted a handheld console I'd just get a 3DS or a Vita for the exclusives

It looks and sounds pretty interesting. It will be sweet if it does everything they are claiming.

I like the concept - certainly a lot more than an Ouya type Android box. It's going to be pricey, though, and I'm building my next PC with an AMD GPU so the idea of using it as a WiiU type controller isn't an extra draw. I may nab one six months after it comes out when they're in clearance bins for a hundred bucks.

It's a concept piece. I get that it will be a product too but I don't think Nvidia seriously expect it to make a dent; its supposed to be part of an on-going direction/trend within the industry towards seamless integration/experience across devices. This device is another step towards ultimately realising that goal. The point of releasing it is to gauge the market and refine the long-term approach, not to take the market by storm (irrespective of what Nvidia representatives might tell you).

Looks a bit awkward to carry around as a portable. I don't like the fact that there are no retail games. I can't see myself ever wanting to get one of these.

Question 1. Is it battery powered by buyable batteries or a rechargable battery that will only hold 30 minutes over time?

Question 2. who the hell is making games for this?

Question 3. Are they going to have games that other systems have or will it be all exclusives?

Question 4. how does the graphic abilities compare to something like the Ps Vita?

Question 5. Can it hook up to a tv or computer?

Question 6 (Joke Question). Does it have a gtx 690?

Pretty much this. It's a very, very niche product that is basically there to see how people react to integration, and to showcase what the company can produce to potential partners.

It could be worse: they could have made a big ass white controller with a giant screen in the middle and a battery that lasts 3 hours. Can you imagine? lol Also, check your xbox messages GME

did you actually read the OP? did you watch the video Nvidia put out

all of those questions are answered there

but fine, to answer your questions:

1- battery that lasts 10 hours for gaming, 24 hours for videos

2- STEAM and Android games

3- Steam and Android

4- Looks much better then the PS Vita from what I've seen

5- Yes

I got the 3DS for Nintendo games and JRPGS, etc, something this probably won't have. Handhelds will only survive on their uniqueness.

I was just reading that you'll only be able to stream games if you've got an Nvidia 6-series graphics card? So about 1/2 of PC gamers?

Good grief, this was niche enough without that.

Cool contraption and all, but I think the Vita's generally poor sales reveal that the market for high-end handhelds is pretty limited to start with, and this is...kind of pointless to even manufacture.

Yeah, but I believe there is some technology that's only in Kepler cards, which is why they can't go further back with it. I do agree that they could be more successful with it if they, at the very least, made the technology an open framework. Granted it would reduce potential Nvidia GPU buyers, but it would increase the number of people interested in the product itself. I'm still quite interested in the device.

Do you find an Xbox 360 controller difficult to lift/move around? Because it's about the same size and weight.
