Who won that gen?
PS1 had the sales and the third party support, but N64 has the memorable games which weren't beaten like a horse by endless sequel.

Playstation by leaps and bounds. The N64 had fantastic games, definitely, but the PS had too much 3rd party support to ignore from Castlevania Symphony of the Night to Metal Gear to Tekken to any Street Fighter to Final Fantasy (hell, RPGs and Fighting games in general) to Resident Evil to Silent Hill...The pricing difference was huge as well, late PS ports on N64 like Megaman Legends, Tony Hawk, and RE2 were $20 more.
When it came to MUST HAVE FANTASTIC GAMES (by critics), the PS had more to buy for gamers. I bought every bad ass exclusive I could on both machines though. On the flipside, the PS also offered media capabilities like the ability to play MUSIC CD's! Haha.
As a Nintendo fan, arcade fan, and fighting game fan, Nintendo's 64 was a nice machine with treasures, but not enough for me to rate it over the godly Playstation. I think Age also comes into play. I wasn't a child that got a N64 for Xmas, and I found a lot of kids at that age weren't as picky. I had to buy the machine. I had high hopes, but ultimately I had no choice but to buy support Playstation after the N64 let me down with support, and Sega dropped the ball with the Saturn.
I got an N64 first, i was mindblown by Mario 64/OoT/Banko/Goldneye/WCW vs NWO/. I heard hype about this "playstation" and i was trying to tell people that there was NO WAY that playstation was better than N64.
A year or two later we got a Playstation, i made the mistake of putting in Final Fantasy 7 on a school night and couldnt go to sleep, i had to keep playing this crazy game. FF7 is still my favorite game of all time and i've owned every Playstation platform since.
Square Soft in their prime was glorious, everything else was just a bonus.
PlayStation won since it had the higher sales, but the N64 was the better console. Nintendo and RARE were at their very best on the N64 turning out one classic after another. The PS1 had a larger quantity of games, but nothing on the PS1 could compare to the quality of the classic games that Nintendo and RARE were releasing at that time.
At the time I totally preferred my playstation. However, going back to play those games now, the N64 titles have aged much better. Nintendo got a handle on this whole 3D gaming thing sooner than everyone else. Crash Bandicoot doesn't hold a candle to Mario 64, I was just too young to know it back then.
N64 was the technically superior system. However cartridges were much more expensive compared to cds (i believe) and third parties jumped ship to Sony. (also I have heard that Nintendo treated third parties poorly as well, prompting them to go to the next big thing) So the amount of games and sales were better on the PS1.
Personally, looking back, I think I enjiyed my N64 more. Don't get me wrong, PS1 kicked ass. But I just refer what Ninty offered.
Never had a PS1. But as far as I'm concerned the N64 is still one of the best consoles of all time. Really had some great games
Not really a fair comparison. They were different in every respect: technology, media support, control method, target demographics, innovation. You can compare the PS1 and the Saturn, even the PS1 and the 3D0, but the N64 lived in its own bubble.
