Kojima wanted Gray Fox, not Raiden, in Metal Gear Rising

Hideo Kojima would have preferred if the star of the new Metal Gear game had been the cyber ninja Gray Foy, rather than "running nude" Raiden, but since he was committed not to interfere with the development of the game he decided to let his staff decide. And they picked Raiden. Over Gray Fox.

"In my personal opinion, I wanted to go for Frank Jaegar or Gray Fox. But if we had gone with that, I would have had to write the script and then be really committed to creating the game."

Well.

Poor Kojima, has to do everything himself it seems. His staff fuk up everything.

Franke Jaeger is cool as poo.

I don't see much to talk about, if he wanted to write the story he would have had different ideas, that's obvious. It would be like if I said if I wrote the Avengers I would want Spider Man in it, also I would have made the story completely different because I would have wrote it instead of the writer. Even if the people creating the game had used Grey Fox it still wouldn't have been what Kojima would have done if he was the writer.

Yeah, Gray Fox would have been infinitely better. Raiden is a little bltch compared to him.

I like how Kojima is always levying these controversial decisions on his "staff" like the decision to end MGS4 like it did and now this.

Raiden is the newer cyber ninja. That is probably why.

Gray Fox would have certainly been a great choice but I think Raiden is a solid character as well especially after the amazing MGS4. So can't wait for this game. :D

It doesn't change the fact that he's still a major crybaby that most, if not all, of us had to deal with in MGS 2 SOL.

I'd play a game where you control badass 'Jack the Ripper' kid soldier Raiden. That would be epicness on a different scale.

It's just like playing Ken or Ryu in MGS2. He uses the same basic moves that Solid Snake does but with a few variations.

If this had been the case, the game probably could have been much better. Don't get me wrong, it still looks pretty awesome but after hearing this idea, I think it would have been spot on to have Gray Fox as the character and Kojima actually doing this game.

Everyone wanted a Raiden game after MGS4. I didnt know anyone who was clamoring for a Grey Fox game.

That said, Kojima needs to stop throwing his team under the bus. First, he blamed his team for the ridiculous MGS4 ending then the whole Metal Gear Raiden fiasco and now this. We get it. His team cant get a game going without his leadership, but what does it say about the leader? He has led this team for the past 25 years. 25 years. And he cant find a single person beside himself to lead a game? I find that hard to believe.

Bummer. Raiden did get pretty cool in MGS4, but Grey Fox is one of the best characters ever.

I am really glad they decided to go with Raiden as the main character, and not just because he's been my favorite character since MGS2.
But a game starring Gray Fox before he became the cyborg ninja; one that is based on when he was in his prime in Foxhound, that would be pretty cool.

Funny that you mention that. I remember everyone hating Raiden when MGS2 came out and...I sort of agreed. But then MGS4 came out. And Raiden was like some super ninja who was made up of cybernetic enhancements, and he was a brooding loner who dumped his wife and newborn child. And I was like...WTF? On one hand, we've got the sissy Raiden who whines and talks about his girlfriend, on the other hand we've just got the standard cliche stereotypical brooding loner warrior who's seen the horrors of war (or something) and throws away everything he cares about while becoming a robotic killing machine. And...there is a hell of a lot of middle ground between those two extremes. Raiden in MGS2 was a sissy, but Raiden in MGS4 just comes off as if he's trying too hard to not look like a sissy. The latter is actually worse. I've never liked Raiden in the first place. But if he had to be in MGS4 at all, I actually would have preferred it if it was MGS2 Raiden. At least that would have been more true to the actual character. Anyway, f*** Raiden. I have no interest in playing another game featuring Raiden, particularly the try-too-hard "badass" cyborg Raiden.

Gray Fox that character that did little and matter that much. Look like the made the right choose. Kojima go make some long, worthless cutscenes you can add to a game.

Raiden sucks. He sucked in MGS2 and he was stupid in MGS4 where they paaaainfully try and make the guy cool. I am in the extreme minority but I despise that character. I would have rather played as beeman from part 3 and farted bees at enemies.

Yup. He is an excellent director but clearly he is a bad teacher and is so controlling that that he doesn't promote his teams new ideas.

So that means he never really wanted MGR to be between MGS2 and MGS4 that much. Also that last bit of the original interview was pretty funny.
#19 Posted by Justforvisit (5047 posts) -

Well, if that would have been the case then...

WARNING SPOILER FOR MGS1 FOLLOWING

...try to explain how Frank Jaeger aKa Gray Fox would have survived to being flattend like a Pizza to the Wall from Metal Gear Rex in the End Fight of MGS1

I assume this is pretty deadly to a Cyborg as well as to a human being. Would also pretty much change the outcome for the later installments when Naomi wouldn't have lost her Brother in terms of her revenge plan etc.

I don't understand how you could make a game about Grey Fox. He really doesn't strike me as a protagonist character.

#22 Posted by El_Zo1212o (6005 posts) -
Luckily, all I ever played were MGS, Snake Eater 3D, and MGS(GBC). So I don't have any preconceptions about the character- all I see is a badass protagonist slicing the hell out of evildoers by the hundreds. Would Grey Fox have been awesome? Hell yeah! If they pitched a Grey Fox skin as DLC, I'd buy it. And why is everyone so sour at Kojima? It's not like he said, "this game's gonna suck because I didn't do everything myself," he's saying "I would have picked Grey Fox, but then I would have had to be too involved."

I thought we all liked Raiden now. Poor guy can't catch a break. New Dante thinks he has it tough - Raiden has had to listen to this for over a decade :)

Hideo Kojima isn't much of a writer, not quite sure why they would need him to write any scripts.
