Really idiotic question, you don't kill anybody in a game, it's not real, therefore you are not killing someone.

Sometimes yes. Like when I kill a civilian accidently in some games or something. Sometimes I feel so bad I load the previous save, even though it makes no difference whatsoever if you kill a civilian or not.

Moved to Games Discussion.

As for your question, sometimes. In single player sometimes I'm doing an "evil playthrough" just to see the difference in the game and I still feel bad, or when I accidentally kill someone I didn't have to or didn't save them in time.

In multiplayer, normally not, since most of the times that's the objective of the game; exceptions are in things like Guild Wars 2 jumping puzzle in pvp...it's a royal pain in the butt to get there and then there are people who sit 3 feet from the end of the puzzle and kill the opposite faction on sight...I can't do that, feels terrible...unless they attack me first, then it's bye-bye.

No since if the game is competitive First person shooter and the goal is the kill the other players to capture the flag or remain king of the hill etc.

No I don't feel remorse since it is just a game. That is what you are supposed to do in a deathmatch or competitive game mode.

Or if it is a fighting game with a fatality or something. It is just a game and is not "real."

Yes. One in particular was towards the end of "The Last of Us" when I was rescuing Ellie from the operating table. The surgeon got between me and her with a scalpel and I shot him in the head, prompting the nurse to call me a monster. I felt like a dick for doing that even though it needed to be done. How many surgeons are left in this world?

In a narrative heavy game where the death of a character is permanent, yes, I'll feel a bit bad when I kill or allow a character to die whom I didn't want to have die.

I tried punching him, then fired a warning shot in the air and then shot him in the foot when he wouldn't back off lol. She still called me a monster like I was the asshole.

It didn't have the same impact on me, but a lot of people felt sick after the white phosphorus scene in Spec Ops.

Some of the kills in The Last of Us and Hotline Miami were pretty intense and made me hit pause for a minute or two.

It all depends on the context. Killing a monster, zombie, evil person, etc., no not so much. However I have felt bad killing an innocent civilian or animal by accident along with some games where the antagonist isn't wholly evil and the narrative portrayed him with some semblence of sympathy.

Not trying to be all tough but the answer is no. Although I can get heavily into my games and I take it all in, when it comes to killing, looking back i'm strangely dark and random with it. Remember murdering all the children in the all girl orphanage in Deus Ex Invisible War just because you could and I wanted to see how the story will get around that one. Turned out the sister of one of the main characters worked there and I heard her moping about it. Then I shot her to.

Do I need help?

Nah It's just kind of funny in games. I love rebelling against the games world. You should see the prick my Witcher 3 Garret has become.

Remorse seems like such a heavy word. It's not something that lingers, but yeah, it's the same as with movies when something bad happens to a character you like. When the narrative context does something to give a character personality or meaning, I can feel bad about killing the person. Just like it can feel extremely good to kill a horrible antagonist at the end of a game. So as others have said, it depends on context.

Of course not. But then again, I have a lot of trouble swallowing suspension of disbelief. Doesn't matter if it's games or movies. This usually only applies to violence though, perhaps it's the extremity of the act that requires far more than decent acting and effects to convince me. I can play the most violent games and watch the worst movies without trouble, but RL violence makes me ill. I'm a complete wimp towards it. Just the fact I know there's a real person.

Hell no.

Just an hour ago I killed some civilians in Bioshock Infinite as they were trying to flee the Vox. I managed to snipe one dude off the airship high tailing it in response to me killing three other people in quick succession beforehand. Freaking hilarious when the guy fell off the airship down to "the sodom below". I thought, "That's what you get for being racist assholes".

Half the fun in video games is shooting motherfuckers. Never gets old.

Kinda like near the end of TLOU when you had to kill that one doctor to get Ellie out of the hospital. A small part of me wishes you could spare the guy, but then I realize it's more fun to make Roast Doctor with the flamethrower. :/

nope, not even close to being done in reality. I remember this back in GTA SA,in which I kill them same people over and over again(of course I have to make a few cheats to do it) those are all the days of fun..nowadays it feels a bit wrong and immoral, given that characters are near-human in appearance...I wish there's a better way to deal with them without costing me any trouble.

Generally no. But it does depend on if the character has any developed personality and depth or if it's just a faceless character among other face less characters.

Sometimes, depending on the game and situation. Just yesterday I've choose to kill a succubus in Witcher 3 and felt a bit guilty afterwards. Yes I know, it's just pixels, like books are just letters and we shouldn't feel nothing at all.

One of my worst moments was not with a person but with my horse in Dead Read Redemption. I was talking with my wife saying that that horse was my companion, that I only used him during the whole game and i mess up with the controller and accidentally shoot the horse in the head. I was so shocked, but at the same time I couldn't stop laughing... but I feel remorse until this day.

The people you kill in games are usually brain dead bots..... or they are evil and you kinda feel good for ridding the world from that diabolic presence.

If you want me to feel remorse then give me an actual character filled with personality..... then let me decide if I can kill them..... forcing me to kill them to complete the game isn't going to have the desired result anyone is looking for.

like someone else stated, depends on the context.

If there is no personality, and no differing visual factors (as in clones). Then no.

if the game does not allow choice then no.

In some games where you get to shoot an NPC you have had positive interactions with, or perhaps worse is faced with the aftermath, then yes it is possible.

@hyksiu: It depends on the character and the game. I got immersed with Witcher 3. Some of the people, and even monsters, I killed directly or indirectly made me remorseful - sure.

Not in an online MP game! But if I'm playing a SP game like Splinter Cell: Blacklist I prefer to knock my enemies out as opposed to killing them!
