John Romero's Making a New Shooter

It's been more than a decade since Daikatana, but John Romero is returning to shooters. On Joystiq's most recent podcast, the DOOM co-creator revealed his future plans.

Romero didn't divulge many details, but said the shooter is among "several" games he's working on right now.

And hey, while we're at it, maybe we can convince Tom Hall to start working on Anachronox 2.

Shooters have changed quite a bit since Daikatana. I think, in a lot of ways, for the worse. The levels, especially, are so boring because they're emulating real life locations.

I do hope he brings back that style of shooter, though. I hope he brings fantasy elements and nonsensical, but cool level designs. And secrets :) Bring back hidden levers that open secret doors!

I think that's fine if he makes a new shooter. I just hope it is we received, even more so than his "other" shooter.

I'm happy for this. The guy helped create Doom, one of the greatest and most influential games ever made. Hopefully he doesn't disappoint like he did with....that game that shall not be named.

Despite Daikatana's disaster, it still believe he's a fantastic game designer. Can't wait to see his new shooter.

He definitely is a great game designer. In fact, I admired him, and even looked up to him. I thought he was the big voice of Id Software. I saw him as one of the big boys of the company. But when I heard he was let go from Id Software, I was surprised. I remembered that controversial Diakatana ad. I thought it was a bit weird, but funny, at the time. But that Ad got me a bit hyped, because I thought, "Wow, this guy really is gonna release something cool. But when I tried the demo, I didn't like it. Heck, I didn't even finish the demo of the game. And when I heard Diakatana had bad reviews, I was pretty disappointed. One of my gaming developer heroes, John Romero, ended up making a crappy game, I thought to myself. And then, I never heard from John Romero within the gaming news.
