I really do not understand what people get out of the combat in these games. Actually playing the game mechanically is not fun, I really do not get why all Japanese games have to do that weird character movement thing of the character moving off center and then they camera follows a few paces later. It is just really annoying, games like Final Fantasy 13 do the same thing only they have the really long strides as well. Why can't we have one to one movement like western games do? It feels so much more responsive and just nicer to play, Dark Souls ends up feeling really dated as a result.

The actual combat is garbage though, it is about bugging out the A.I and trying to break the game. It doesn't feel satisfying, but more about discovery on which bit of the level can you break the A.I on. I wouldn't say the combat is good or fun, it just feels so clunky and slow and really frustrating.

Mount and Blade is a game I look to for third person melee combat, it gets it done so perfectly. Left Click controls one arm, right click controls the other, then WASD you use to choose the direction you want to block or swing in. It is so responsive and one to one with your actions using the mouse and keyboard. It is all in real time with freedom to move and hit where you want. Dark Souls is all animation based, so you hit in predetermined areas and you feel like you have no control, I hate Japanese games because they always do this animation first combat. You know the games where you press a button to melee someone and instant kill them, it is the same with quick knives in COD... I hate that crap! I want the freedom to hit anywhere I want, you know like CS where you get the knife out and you stab where you want, not press a button to win.

I just wish developers looked at Mount and Blade, not Dark Souls for the combat. I understand what is potentially fun with the game, I like hard games and trial and error is fun in Dark Souls, what I hate though is the combat.

Go play some Severance: Blade of Darkness. It has combat that's more to your liking and generally feels like it'd suit ya more than Dark Souls.

It's not a Japanese thing, really. It's just a From Software thing. Play a game like Ninja Gaiden or Bayonetta and you will wonder why western developers can't get combat right.

@gajbutler:

The big challange with Dark Souls is actually learning how to read these animations of different enemies and to properly execute your attacks within the timing windows. This requires some practise.

The game is obiviously not for everyone.

Many people just hate on things they don't understand...

Yeah, I loved Ninja Gaiden black on the orginal xbox. It's a superb game really. It would not be the same with any other control scheme,

Mechanically, Dark Souls is one of the best games in recent memory. It focuses on player feedback and proper timing. You are forced to learn the mechanics inside and out in order to do even remotely decently, and to do well, you have to be "on" all the time.

@foxhound_fox: he's only played the tutorial, which is only like 1% of the game as you're aware. And stats make him cranky because cheese (meaning there's no true reason). Don't bother with Lulu, he's too focused on making sure everything you like is something wrong with games.

@Lulu_Lulu: I'm just not in the mood for your "facts" that are all just opinions and hiding the real issue of you trying to justify why you don't like certain games without concrete proof. But like I said, I'm not debating with you until you acknowledge that. Seeing as how that's unlikely, I'll just be content to reminding people of what you do around here.

Considering you can beat the game at level 1, then stats are pretty much superfluous. It's a 100 percent skill-based game.

Don't even bother, he had this argument with me before and proved he doesn't have any experience with actually playing the game.

And I wouldn't say that it's 100% skill-based, you still need to invest resources in upgrading weapons, since that is where all the damage actually flows from at SL1. Unless you are talking about a pure SL1 run where they use the stock everything... but that's just insane.

Might be insane but a friend of mine did Dark Souls with the butterknife which means all bosses all areas. So its not wrong when people call Dark Souls a skill based game, its all about how fast you learn the mechanics.

Of course the less skilled players can benefit from upgraded weapons and leveling, but thats because they lack skill and need to combine the 2

@foxhound_fox: that might be insane, but a truly skilled player cand do it I'm sure. For newcomers though, stats are useful for them to learn the necessary skills without getting overwhelmed. Otherwise, just remember patterns

So what does that entail exactly, if you don't modify any of your stats, that means you do less damage, which only tests your endurance (not even physical endurance, just your mental endurance) and 2ndly it means you can't get hit, so it tests your ability to perfectly dodge anything and everything... Which does sound challenging, since Rolling away doesn't grant you invulnerability like it does in Other games. Mastering that doesn't take hundreds of hours.

What else Changes ?
