Gosh, I don't know. Do quarter-eating games like Smash TV count?

Well, I guess I already answered then, but it's hard to say if it's difficult or not since your lives are simply limited to how much money you're willing to spend by design.

No joke, Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. I am fairly certain DMC3 on as hard as it could go combined with the newer Ninja Gaiden (or heck, the old) would be easier than that game. Especially the last bits of it. So hard.

I have beaten Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, and I cannot for the life of me comprehend how that could seriously not be a joke.

probably mike tyson on mike tyson's punchout....when i orginally played it....i have never tried to do anything in gaming that was more frustrating than taking down tyson....a honorable mention would be Sonic and the Secret Rings as the only game that has ever made me sweat...my apartment was hot, but the fact i had to get so into fighting the final boss that i started to perspire is definitely worthy of a mention

It is because I don't exactly enjoy a game where every single attack feels like a mini-game all its own. I am at the last part of the game currently and honestly having to dodge this and that and then press all 4 of the face buttons for good attacks most of the time in random order (the spring thing for example, exact name slips me at the moment) is just to annoying. Top that with the fact enemies have far more hp then they should and its not really fun and way to tedious. Maybe hard is a bit skewed when describing it but I find the end of the game way to unbearable for my tastes.

To be honest, I thought the game was too easy, but then I knew it was going to be easy when I bought it, so I can't complain. Is it hard for an RPG? I don't know. Maybe. I still thought it was easy though. *shrug*

Like I said, hard might be a bit hard describing it. It just pulls of some cheap stuff that annoys me. Having a normal enemy at the end of the game hit me and take away almost 50% of my hp when it is impossible to dodge (as that happens at times) is cheap. I wouldn't call it hard like other games where it is still manageable, but annoying-hard.

Wow, that's a toughie.
The original Hitman was wicked hard.

Spider Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage (GEN). Hell, I have probably put over a thousand hours into that over the past fourteen years I have never made it to the end without using a continue.

Mike Tysons Punch Out (beat it), Space Harrier, Smash TV, CastleVania Rondo of Blood, Contra (No Code), Fatal Fury: Mark of The Wolves....and i would say soon to be Contra 4 on the DS

Samuraii Showdown 2 on Neo Geo gets a vote also.

StarCraft on B.NET against good players.

My point is, you cant really say one game is harder than some other game... doesnt it depend on the difficulty level you play the game on?

Actually, I take back what I said about Contra and Ninja Gaiden. The real hardest game I've ever played is Super Mario Forever as seen in the "Super Mario Frustration" video. Now that game is hard.

To me the most difficult games to beat is something along the lines of Pacman or Pong, not that there weren't difficult moments in video gaming for the last 10+ years or so..

Ironically enough, the most simplistic games seems to be the hardest.

Ghost Recon Advance warfighter 2 (PC version)... the hardest game ive ever played,

One thing that makes it very hard is there is no quick save...

Hard to pick just one but I might have to vote for Gun.Smoke (arcade/Capcom Classics Collection). I may very well just be horrible at that game but I have trouble staying alive for more thanthree minutes at a time. Robotron 2084 was another game that didn't want you to get more than five minutes of gameplay for your quarter  The Ghosts N' Goblins/Ghouls N' Ghosts games are also up there, with Super Ghouls N' Ghosts being the hardest. There's also plenty of good stuff on NES as people have already mentioned, like Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Contra, etc. I haven't played Battletoads but that's the one I always hear is hardest

Of more recent games, I'd have to say F-Zero GX Story Mode is at the top out of the ones I've played. Ikaruga and Gradius V have some of the hardest gameplay and are very hard to be good at. Shinobi (ps2) has a wicked hard final boss. Contra: Shattered Soldier is another one I always hear about but I haven't got to that one yet either.

StarCraft on B.NET against good players.

Sumotaii

Very good call... anyone who wants to get pwnt extremely hard should go on to Battle.net and try playing StarCraft against some of those guys.
