These are the two most known and most owned, and apparently most sought after Action Adventure games ever made, and while they are both at it, are some of the highest selling game franchises and highest rated game franchises of all time. They are straight opposites of each other in almost all ways, with one being a more easier to pick up and play and cartoon-like, as well as tons of stuff to do and a long length of game play in general, and less realistic with Zelda. Then you have Grand Theft Auto, realistic, more modernized, with just as much if not more content and length. Both are very similar in ways, both seemed to have tons of stuff to do, and have quite a few memorable characters, both have very similar core formulas with each game, but add enough to make each game feel different than the next never seeming to be repetitive or rehashed. Both mainly change everything up each game with a new story with only a few direct sequels/prequels made. Both went from 2D and gained immense popularity they never had before in 3D with just the first transition. Both take awhile to make, and both have eager fans knowing the wait is worth it for each. I would also like to add everywhere on the Internet or in person, you will find fans of both, having so many arguments about the best game in the series, and neither will say that there is a "Bad" game in either. They may not like one game and state some issues they had, but will still say it is a solid game. No other fanbase has this kind of peaceful disliking of a game. They may even still play the game they had issues with again, because they know it has enjoyable parts and still a solid title! The Two Best games for each IMO are: And I already see the riots happening now. Yeah I am in the minority with both. But still, this thread is not about me, it's about you. I think. So mention which of these two series you like more. Personally, atm, because of Windwaker and Skyward Sword I will give it to GTA.

+1 Grand Theft Auto easily.

That's really hard, you're basically asking me if it's either this:

MMBoxArt.jpg

Or this:

gta-san-andreas-pc.jpg

I really can't choose since both are great at what they do but if I was forced too I would probably say GTA. San Andreas alone just has such an overwhelming amount of content and replayability it's just astounding that was accomplished on the PS2. Majoras Mask on the other hand is my favorite Zelda game and while I'm definitely in the minority when it comes to that I personally think it's the highlight of the series and one of the best Action Adventure games ever.

This is no contest for me Zelda by miles I don't love GTA as much as most people do

Grand Theft Auto is better.

#7 Posted by nameless12345 (15125 posts) -

Never really cared for GTA so...

It's an odd comparison, btw.

Kinda like comparing Quake and Mario.

Sure, they both feature jumping but...

Then again, it's your comparison so, eh, why not...

#8 Posted by turtlethetaffer (16675 posts) -

This comparison is rather dumb, but since I'm here, I'll say Zelda, definitely. I have yet to be really impressed by anything I've played by Rockstar, GTA included. Meanwhile Zelda is more or less consistently a very high quality series.

#9 Posted by Lucianu (9351 posts) -

So different, it's not even remotely comparable. Zelda's a traditional action-adventure series focused on puzzle solving, exploration a good sprinkle of action.

GTA is an open-world action game focused on action, vehicle driving and a good sprinkle of exploration.

In this case, altough i don't like any game either, i point a flag for The Legend of Zelda, a game can be rembered fongly for its awesome soundtrack, second battle horse of Miyamoto was an majestic experience to try and explore, it was a perfectioned version of adventure (2600). As for GTA, game is dull, i stick in my Car CD player and no come back, just a waste of time. I speak about original games gave birth to series

But you can shoot people in the face with the hookshot.

Dang, did this place die or something? The activity here is not what it was before. Oh well, anyway, above users it's not the same as shooting hookers in the face.

I'm probably the world's biggest fan of GTA so obviously I would vote for GTA. So many crazy characters to laugh at in the GTA franchise and so many explosions :D

Sigh, that's not fair... I guess it's a tie for me, I grew up on both franchise.
#20 Posted by Jakandsigz (4512 posts) -

What a retarded comparison. And thread. Honestly, if this thread was a child, it'd have Downs Syndrome.

BritishLurker
The issue I have with people that been on OT or SW too long, they lose the ability to comprehend, where the heck is there any implication or mention of comparing the two? No where did I say compare their music, their combat, their stories, or anything, it's about which franchise is better to you overall, and I have no idea why you bust in here with your stupid self misusing the R-word for no reason thinking this thread is about comparing the two.

When you have two things, and you're deciding which one you prefer, you're automatically comparing them.

^^ This guy knows what's up.

Should you make a thread comparing Mario Bros and Persona next, TC?

Both of you are wrong, overall fun factor has nothing to do with comparison. I would have did at least some vague specifics if I was talking about comparisons. You can think one game is better than certain things another games is, but you might like the other game and enjoy it more anyway.

Okay, you're right about that, but attacking someone or criticizing them when they start comparing the games in a thread like this is jsut silly. I don't know how your brain works, but when I think about what game I like more, I instantly start comparing the two. It's pure instinct, not someone misreading the context of your post.

Did you even read the quote I attacked which was an attack itself? Which was way more out of line I might add.

I'm not saying it wasn't.  That user was out of line, IMO. But still, you have to admit, when people think of which game they like better, they instantly start comparing the two, and GTA and Zelda are so radically different that the comparison is a little silly.

Zelda.

GTA has a ton of creativity, and is really unique in a lot of ways.  But the gameplay mechancis such as shooting, cover, and simple things like running/jumping are too clunky.

Thank God someone came out and said it.  From what I've played, the games controls are far too clunky to be very enjoyable.

Man you should play Sleeping Dogs. It remedies all of that.

I wouldn't really call GTA "action-adventure", tbh.

In my opinion, the more fitting description would be "open-world sandbox action game" whereas Zelda is a "fantasy action-adventure" in the true sense of the word.

Tomb Raider and Uncharted are also incorrectly referred to as "action-adventures" when in actuality they are "linear cinematic 3rd person shooters with platforming parts".

The "action-adventure" genre is actually pretty scarce and there are few games that are actually comparable to Zelda. (Okami, ICO/SOTC and perhaps Legacy of Kain being the most comparable)

p.s.: of course what I wrote is just my opinion before some "academic proof" that I am wrong gets thown at me. ;)

In one you can fight a Dragon. Think that one wins.

I'd take even Zelda 2 of any GTA. Can't stand GTA.

Grand Theft Auto got old after a while, Zelda can never get old for me.
#35 Posted by TheFlush (5514 posts) -

I love them both very much, but GTA wins because of the sandbox style.

... now if only... a sandbox style Zelda... yessssss

I think Zelda is pretty sandbox-y as it is.

In OoT for example you can go around and do a ton of sidequest stuff before you go to whatever temple is next

You seem to think Action Adventure is a game with Adventure Elements with Action elements. An Action-Adventure games can have adventure elements, but it's basically just either exploration or solving clues or puzzles with Action being the primary way of progression.

Zelda never quite made its way to my country (Sony liked us more than Nintendo did) so I can't say. But Grand Theft Auto Is terrible, its too ambitious and screws up alot of basics.
#40 Posted by CecilChups (207 posts) -

Zelda. Never honestly was a big fan of GTA. Yeah, the games are okay, but I'd much, much rather play Red Dead Redemption or a new western game by Rockstar.

I don't really care for the whole city/crime metropolis thing. Just seems senseless
