Giant Bomb's Ryan Davis has passed away

Horribly sad and I know many GameSpot fans are also fans of Giant Bomb. I'm sure it doesn't need to be said, but please be respectful -- he was a great member of the video game community.

Giant Bomb has suffered a profound loss.

Ryan Davis passed away on July 3rd. He was 34.

Obviously were all stunned over here. Ryan was a good friend to all of us. Its odd to remember that, for someone who could be so acerbic at times, and despite knowing him for almost a decade, I honestly dont recall ever actually being mad at him. He had an unconventional type of kindness that expressed itself more strongly the longer one knew him, and despite his teasing nature, he always managed to make his close friends feel loved when his attention turned towards you.

Many of you know that Ryan was recently married. In the face of this awfulness, many of us will at least always remember him as we last saw him: outrageously, uproariously happy, looking forward to his next adventure with the biggest grin his face could hold.

The consolation we can feel from that is miniscule compared to the hole that Ryans absence will leave in our lives. Thats not a hole that is possible to fill; its just something that well just have to get used to walking around with, and that will not happen for a long, long time.

I just saw that over on GB. What an asbolutely awful thing, especially considering he just got married like a week ago and seemed so happy.

RIP Ryan, you will be missed...

I don't keep track of Giant Bomb, but I remember Ryan Davis very vividly from the old GameSpot days. He wrote good reviews, but I mostly remember him from On The Spot and E3 coverage.

I met him a few times at PAX, as far as gaming journalist come. He was the nicest one I've ever talked too at these conventions RIP Ryan.

Was/still am in shock. I have listened to thousands of hours of the Giant Bombcast and I met him at PAX East this year. This sucks.

Horrible news. At such a young age, too. Why must life be so cruel?

I saw that headline and it was like a punch to the stomach. All I could think was, "I'm dreaming. This is just a sick, awful dream. There's no way this is real. Or it's joke. A poor, horribly unfunny joke. Don't be real. Please, don't be real." And I never met the man. I didn't know him personally or have any relationship with him beyond the site and the Giant Bomb podcast, but I'm feeling a lump in my throat and a physical emptiness inside. Yeah I was hoping this was some immature troll thread when I saw it.

I mean, f*ck. The reason I joined Gamespot was because I wanted to talk about a specific game with people in the summer of 2004. The reason I kept coming back to Gamespot was because of the interesting/fun reviewers they had (Davis, Gerstmann, Kasavin, Navarro, etc). I may not have known Ryan Davis personally but I feel like I "knew" him in the sense that he's been providing me with entertainment for pretty much a decade now. Giantbomb just won't be the same without him.

Damn.

From his days at GameSpot to his work at Giant Bomb, I've always really appreciated everything he's done for both communities and for game journalism as a whole. 

While I never knew him personally I'm deeply saddened by all of this - to the point of actually being in tears. I feel somewhat personally attached considering how often I listened to the Bomb Cast. He always came across as a great guy and he will be missed greatly.

RIP.

I'm still lingering in shock. After meeting him at 2012 PAX East, it was cool to see that Ryan was the same in person as he was on his shows. He will be missed.

Hasn't sunk in at all. Having listened and watched Ryan for nigh-on 10 years it seems like he'll just spring back up and keep on moving. I'd even imagine he'd pull a stunt like pretending to be dead. What makes it even more ridiculous is that he'd literally just got married. I cannot think what his widow is experiencing. I feel so sorry for everyone who knew him.

Didn't know him on GS and didn't get invested in GB, so I never really knew the guy. It still is sad to see someone die at so young an age and especially after getting married within a week. Best of wishes to his family, friends and fans and hopefully all can pull through this.

I'm absolutely shocked and saddened by this news.:( I just came home, really stressed out about things in my life, but when I came online and read Ryan Davis had died, I just forgot about all that, so I can remember the good times I''ve had watching Ryan Davis and Jeff.

I remember reading some of Ryan Davis's reviews in the past and he sounded like a good soul.

I wondered how he passed away? Very tragic. May he RIP.

This really sucks, not much else to say.  He was one of my favourite GB guys, the E3 stuff is always top notch.  I'm not sure what the cause of death was but I really wish he took better care of himself.  The other day I'm watching a vid and hes just chugging soda after soda, it just struck me as very unhealthy.  This was shortly after Patrice Oneal died, and I couldn't help but think of the similarities.

Ryan has been part of the group of critics I have followed and enjoyed since I finally got my own job and really got into gaming back in 2001. Needless to say, but still: it's terrible, it's awful, and life ca really suck sometimes. My deepest condolences to his friends, colleagues, and especially his wife.

It's the kind of awful that refuses comprehension.

Definitely not.

While I can't say that I was ever a big follower of Ryan, I did recognize his work that he did, both here and on Giant Bomb. My sincere condolences go out to him and his family.
