Hey guys, i really like games that focus a lot on the story. I have played The Last Of Us, The Walking dead season 1-2, Kingdom Hearts, Mass Effect 1-2-3, One chance (flash game), To the moon, little infermo, Thomas was Alone and many others. Do you guys know if there are other games like those listed above? I don't necessarely want ''Big'' games, smaller games with great story work too.

@vento313:

If you're into Game Of Thrones, I would certainly recommend the RPG that came out a couple years ago. It ain't much to look at, and the combat can be a bit clunky, but the story, characters and dialogue are actually pretty awesome.

It also does well to tie into parts of the story that viewers of the TV show will appreciate (I won't spoil it for you).

It's often overlooked, which is why I recommend it specifically.

Also try: Bastion, Alpha Protocol (come at me bros), Dust: An Elysian Tale, The Witcher

The Cat Lady - Although the game is extremely dark, but an excellent original story.

Gone Home - Best had be a good story too, as there is not a lot in terms of gameplay in this "Game" still its worth playing through for the story.

Check out Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill Shattered Memories. Both have some really touching, sad stories.

If you're looking for simply great stories, check out the two Zero escape games, Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors and Virtue's Last Reward. The writing is damn good in both those games.

Spec Ops : The Line, If you really pay attention and read the entire game between the lines then you have "Apocalypse now" in Video game form.

Nier. Although I would consider it downright depressing rather than touching. Great story nonetheless.

If you want really great, profound and touching stories I suggest you read a good book or watch a good movie or watch a good and serialized TV show. The best game stories are still miles away from being as compelling, thought provoking or profound as the best books, movies or TV shows, IMHO. But the storytelling quality of games has certainly improved a great deal over the last 20 years, and will continue to improve more, and what makes a story great or not is always somewhat subjective...

I'm not sure how popular this opinion will be, but I recommend Final Fantasy X.

It's got everything:

Romance, Adventure, Tragedy, Fantasy, Suspense, Mystery. Its got one of the best stories I've ever seen in a video game.

Grim Fandango.
Either get it now (the old, original version)...or wait for the remake. If they stick to the storyline, it's a guaranteed "touching" game that you'll love.

@vento313:

You may want to try the Metal Gear Solid Series. My favorite out of the series is MGS 3.

Also, final fantasy games usually have good stories.

Other games: Halo series, Elder Scrolls series

And I haven't played these, but I'm sure they have good stories as well:

Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, Yakuza series

@vento313: Dead Space , Journey , some older games like a Illusion of Gaia , ChronoTrigger ( I thought ChronoCross was just awful ) , Earthbound , any Zelda game -- especially Link's Awakening. Off the top of my head ... ~

  • n. a competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance on the part of two or more persons who play according to a set of rules, usually for their own amusement or for that of spectators: the game of basketball; the game of gin rummy.

So according to you there are no video games in existence that contain any kind of story?

I'm saying that a story in a video game is superfluous. Lots of games have them, lots don't. A game isn't rated on it's story, it's just a background. Like a Street Fighter II level, it just adds flavor to the competition. I enjoy a good story from time to time, just not so much in video games.

Isn't that a bit of a generalisation? I disagree. IMO a game's story can be a very important aspect of the game... Depending on the type of game of course.

I agree with your point say if it was a Mario game. But a game like Mass Effect, the story is incredibly important and without it the game wouldn't be the same.

Eh, that's questionable. Video game stories are decent at best, compared to movies and especially books. Games just don't have the proper stage to tell a really moving story, because they have to incorporate interactivity in to the mix. That drastically limits what can be told and how they tell it in a video game.

Spec Ops The Line

Metal Gear Solid (it goes a bit bulshit with second one, but most of the pople ok with it and its just i dont like freakish conspiracy theories, but 3rd one is amazing) also MGS has jokes, and funny moments in it, the series doesnt takes itself too serious in general which makes it really original, i really like it, but if you dont like that kind of stuff you might want to skip it.

I havent played it myself but i heard Heavy Rain might be the 'game' you are looking for, since you just want a good story, not gameplay.

Aut of these only mgs series enhances its story with its game design and its f@!king amazing, just wanted to add

For what its worth, I hardly pay attention to the story in games nope I never do, but the only stories I actually paid attention to were

  1. Star Ocean Till The End of Time
  2. MGS4
  3. Red Dead Redemption
  4. GTA4

Yeah that's about it rest I could care less. If you care about stories play adventure games. Asia big on adventure games although I don't know much about them. I'm pretty sure not all of them are ecchi.

@jimmy_russell: You should watch CinemaSins on youtube. Thats where you see how movies are full of mistakes and holes, more than games
