Lots and lots of "First video game" threads, but what i'm interested to know is what the first game you paid for with your own money is.

And must be a console game which excludes PC, Amiga, Amstrad, Spectrum, BBC. Basically anything that shipped with a keyboard doesn't count.

If you want include what you thought of it then, why you bought it (if you can remember) and what you think of it now. And if you've still got it.

---

My first:

198112_10316_thumb.jpg

Need for Speed 2 - PS1

Had read numerous praising reviews of NFS1 on the 3DO but didn't really fancy having that console. NFS2 basically influenced me to buy a Playstation. It was new out when i saw it in a shop (1997), i wanted it, so bought a PS1 with it to play it on.

I really enjoyed it at first, of course being my only game (aside from the demo disc that came with the console) i played it often. Other games joined the collection over the months but it remained my favourite driving game. Then Gran Turismo 1 came out in '98 and made NFS2's flaws glaring.

-

Always kept it for prosperity, still got it now. Played it a couple of weeks ago and it's better than i remember. Obviously completely outclassed in every respect nowadays, but still enjoyable.

-

What are yours?

First game I paid for was Zelda on the NES. At the time there were only a handful of launch titles. I didn't know what to get so I bought the gold game. I was only 10 years old. It took me months to figure out how to get past the first boss.

I dont really remember what my first console game was that I bought myself but I know I bought most of my SNES games from the downtown video rental store. The games that I bought from the video rental store they were on sale at 10 bucks all the time so I used my lawnmowing money and report card grades money to buy SNES games such as Zelda Link to the Past, X-Men Mutant Apocalypse, Super Mario RPG, Eye of the Beholder, Jurassic Park and Judge Dredd.

Super Mario Brothers 2. I forget the exact circumstance but I was beyond excited at the time. That was when was about seven and I probably only bought a small handful of games for myself between then and when I got a job about ten years later.

Damn what was it with Nintendo calling everything 'Pak' on the N64? :).

Hmmm I think the first game I bought for myself was WWF Attitude on PS1. Either that or Tony Hawk 2.

I remember it feeling so much better saving my own pocket money to buy a game.

One of the sad things that I loved most (which I still love now) is the smell of the instruction booklet. Peel off the wrapping, smell the inside of the case then fan yourself with the instruction book. Nothing smells better than 'new game manual'.

I thought it was great and wonderful back then in the mid 1990s that I was able to buy some SNES games cheaper at the video rental store for 10-12 bucks real cheap than spending 20-25 bucks on a brand new SNES game at a Kmart store back then

can't remember the first console game, but the first game I bought (ie , one that wasn't already installed on the PC) , was probably Warcraft 1, I actually wanted to get Warcraft 2 (which was just out at the time) , but since it was out of stock, I got the original instead.

although that wasn't the first game I played obviously, there were plenty of older DOS games on the PC which I played, though they were installed by someone else, usually my father or uncle.

I don't remember what game it was, it was soooo long ago. I do remember the first console we owned was an Atari 2600, which I'd get bored with pretty quickly. Then we got our NES and I was hooked. Super Mario Bros. being the game that I first really got into, then The Legend of Zelda and TMNT after that.

The first console I got myself was my SNES, which I traded many NES games towards to get.

Honestly, I think it was the Xbox 360.

The NES was always in the house. It must've been my brother's because it's been around since I can remember. Some years later, my brother got a PlayStation. Over time, he stopped using it and I eventually took it over. The PlayStation 2 was a gift so that doesn't count either. The first console I ever purchased with my own money would've been an Xbox 360.

(And that's the first console paid with my own money. I've own multiple PlayStation 2 systems. For instance, when the slim models came out. Those I paid myself. Technically I already owned a PS2 so... does that make sense?)

I think this was the first game I chose.

I remember back when retailers like Bestbuy would litter the store with games with a plain hard casing as security. Its not like now where is only an empty box. I also loved the Toys R us slip pick up.

I believe it was this:

mkt

and this:

ffvii

MKT was $9.99 new and FFVII was $14.99 new back in 2004.

I was gonna say FFIX initially but then I remembered that my Dad helped me buy it.

Smurf Rescue in Gargamel's Castle for the ColecoVision was the first for me. Donkey Kong came with the system.

At the time I thought it was pretty sweet. Still like to play it every now and then.

The first game I remember buying with my own money was Final Fantasy VII back in 1997. Before that, I used to rely on family members to buy the games I play, but FF VII was the first game I used my own savings to buy. I remember selling my lunch tokens at school for a month, in addition to saving up any pocket money I get, to save up £45 (equivalent to over $70) in order to buy that game on release day. I'm just glad FF VII was well worth all the investment.

Glad to see he carried on and still became a gamer! :D I could easily see someone else just deciding that video games suck and getting into another hobby with an experience like that.

Bought for me: Mortal Kombat II, Street Fighter 2: Chamiponship Edition, and Alien 3 for the Genesis. My brother and I got our Genesis and those three games for Christmas one year.

Bought myself: Zone of the Enders.

With my genesis I never bought a game from the store, but only second hand games. I might have bought some new GameBoy or Game Boy Color games, though most if not all of them were presents from my parents or bought second hand instead of new. First 'new' game I bought then was either Croc Legend of the Gobbo's or V-Rally. One of these came with my PS1 when I bought it from the store, the other I bought with it. I think V-Rally was the one that came with the console actually. So it would be Croc.

I think is was 720 Degrees for the NES...what a crappy game. I'd played the arcade version and like a stupid kid I still didn't get the whole NES games are nothing like their arcade counterparts. Though Double Dragon NES is still the game that really scarred my memory as being nothing like the Arcade.

my parents got us a NES and SNES. But i was 16 when i got my N64 with my own money. Best investment into a video game system i ever made. i still have it hooked up with 9 games and 5 working controllers.
