Dark Souls II doesn't have the same feel as the other two because Hidetaka Miyazaki didn't take part in it. He's been working on Bloodborne, instead. So, overall DSII feels more mechanical then the previous 2 games. With the boss battles being the most showing of that. Just about all the boss battles in DSII were forgettable and, overall, feel cheap.
Also, DSII is only hard in the beginning. Once you acquire the two "Ring of Life Protection" (which can be gotten early in the game, once you know where they're at) the whole premise surrounding hollow form and blood spot recovery is completely lost. Just look at the stats of Dead versus Human.... http://farfire.darksoulsii.com/pc/players/index.html
If it weren't for that ring, the scale would be swinging the opposite.
And there is no benefit of not leveling up. Matchmaking is mainly determined by Soul Memory. And this effect is worse on the PC, since on the PC it's easier to hex edit stats. So, if you happen to kill a grief'er with modified stats, via. a gravity kill. Then your Soul Memory gets an automatic boost of about 100-300k. Which means you're gonna get invaded by real high ranking guys from that point forward.
