Poll Best time period for FPS games? (27 votes)

WW2 Era (Medal of Honor, Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty 1-3, World at War) 22%
Vietnam Era (Bad Company 2: Vietnam, Black Ops, Men of Valor) 7%
Modern Era (Battlefield 2-4, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 1-3, Medal of Honor: War Fighter 22%
Near Future (Black Ops 2, Advanced Warfare, Crysis 3) 11%
Distant Future (Battlefield 2142, Halo, Planetside 2) 37%

Which time periods do you like best? Me personally, I love all of 'em (except WW2), but if I had to order them it would be:

  1. Vietnam War
  2. Near Future
  3. Modern Era
  4. Distant Future/WW2
  5. WW2/Distant Future

I dunno if a period is really the best way to define a fps, most play similar and there are good and bad examples of both for every era

I prefer modern & historic settings. I don`t mind games set in future as long as they have compelling story (which is rare), good atmosphere & if they are fun to play. Games with alternate history are also interesting, like Singularity & Resistance, for example.

Modern or Future

Why? Developers can create unique mechanics and stories without being tied to history.

It's really difficult to say honestly, I guess I'd say far future just because Halo and Borderlands are probably my two favorite FPS franchises, but in all honesty I like a lot of elements of all time frames.

Modern is my best. Because modern weapons are great. Because it's realistic. Because it train while playing.

Crap, I forgot to include games with alternate history. But wouldn't that fall into the WW2 era?

I'd vote for the Alternate Reality option if there was one.

Agreed! I love the modern setting and I definitely appreciate the historical era as well! Now as far as the future, that's one of the main reasons I love the Ghost Recon series! It covers what I call a hybrid era, it has modern weapons but at the same time, very advanced.

only time period I know is when Counter-Strike is in its finest..that is around late 99s to mid 2000s...stiff graphics, but high in fun value,I still love that game even on my now-dead PC despite my FPS skills are quite terrible

WW2 for me, simply because its based on real events and the games can have some real emotion to them.

near/distant future.

it allows devs to be more creative with all the weapons, surroundings, items/gadgets, vehicles... well, you get the idea. everything.

you can go over-the-top with it (Unreal Tournament 3*), or you can do it more subtly (Battlefield 2142).

* UT3 because of the epic vehicles. Remember this? You were able to "walk" with it, or engage in "ball-mode" for ultra-fast rolling;

That said, Battlefield's Titan mode would be ultra-epic when combined with Unreal weaponry and vehicles. Complete with infatry class system.
