There are just too many to choose.
There have been a multitude of games that my intial reaction to the first time playing them was "Wow, this is the greatest game I've ever played" whether it be the game style, the artistic side, the engine type the game is ran off of. There are a number of things that make a game a great one for me, and based upon the different criteria's I see games in, I don't believe I could choose just one.
But, the one game that would score the best on all the different area's I base judgement on a game would have to be Morrowind. I'm not saying it is the best game I've ever played, it just has the highest individual score on all levels of playing.
Also, at the same time, there have been FPS games that have really won me over, such as Day of Defeat: Source. The engine that the game is run off of makes it such a great game. The art is very nice, the animations are done well and just the general gameplay and feel of it. The sounds you hear and the visuals you come across help to immerse yourself into the game and make you feel like you are in that era of time. So it as well, is one of the best games I've ever played.
