The problem isn't Grammaton himself. It's that some people can't accept that they've made a bad post and just move on. And when Grammaton actually elevates the discussion by showing them what's wrong with their arguments, they derail the thread and make it about him, instead of actually, you know, debating properly. Sometimes people actually whine because he elevates the discussion. Apparently, making long posts using proper grammar and a strong vocabulary is mean.
If anything, he's a very respectful poster who actually believes that people are capable of debating intelligently. You don't write a bunch of page-long replies to posts if you don't believe that the guy you're talking to is worth taking the time to write a detailed, in-depth analysis. I sure know that I don't put that much faith in most posters. I tend to keep my posts on the short side because I know how frustrating it is to post 7 paragraphs and get a 1 line answer saying "you're wrong! I'm right! [insert thinly veiled insult here]". Of course he's not going to be very nice after that happens, but he somehow still takes the time to put actual arguments in the following posts.
So all in all, the problem isn't Grammaton. It's some people's bad posting etiquette.
Here's the issue.
I say this with all the respect I can muster because I really do enjoy Gram's posts and do consider him to be a valuable member of these boards as do others (and don't wish to make an enemy of him :p), and respect his ability to express himself more eloquently than most. But I am going to share my thoughts on this matter as it has been building up in me for a while now. I know a few people share my sentiments.
These are some of his (recent) posts:
"YOU responded to a rather innocuous comment I made because you felt the need to make some imbecilic remark that was clearly an insult, further evidenced by your allusion to our previous debate. Truthfully, I don’t much care what you think about AC, AO, GTAV, or anything else because your have demonstrated a dearth of intellectualism that I find numbing and worse, you traffic in bombastic and emotional banality that makes your shitty prose that much more difficult to stomach. I had intended never to address you again in hopes that you would reciprocate but clearly you are still feeling the sting of that last encounter where I was forced to festoon the walls of this forum with your blatant ignorance and clearly, you need the lesson repeated."
and.....
"You are also an unabashed hypocrite because while you attempt to hide behind age as a validation of your opinions (a bullshit tactic you were called out on) you ironically come into a place where you are decidedly inexperienced and begin making any number of presumptions which highlight said inexperience. You are the rhetorical equivalent of a train wreck; an amalgamation of twisted, incongruous notions and ideologies that spew forth all manner of debris and rubble, none of which is salvageable from a logical or coherent standpoint."
Cherry picked excerpts absent context I realize yet regardless, both retain a torrent of verbose, vitriolic, overly harsh, venomously caustic written retribution that is simply unnecessary even for someone that has directed a simple insult or insinuation Gram's way. These replies are total overkill and are very quick to come even at the slightest of provocations/implications (which is why I mentioned ego) and every single word of both of the above are personal in nature. And many times there's 3-4 paragraphs of it. Some of the posts also come off as arrogant and condescending in tone and personally (I feel I stand in the minority in here when I say this), I do not find those attributes and manner of discourse to be admirable nor praiseworthy and it frustrates me to see so many congratulating someone for displaying such an attitude. This is bad posting etiquette. It's rude and derogatory, especially so because he holds the capability of articulating his points to a tee.
The reason I am making this post is not to insult or attack Gram but more so because I find he's too smart and is better than these exchanges. The above types of replies, while an indication of intellect, are also a debasement of it. I much enjoy his posts when they're respectful. Dude grasps language like no other and makes excellent points in every post but on the other hand I've never witnessed such disrespect and harshness in any forum (hell, life in general) directed towards other people before.
I've said my peace and won't say it again. I mean no offense with this, Gram.
