The Austrian Grand Prix is set to return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2014, after Spielberg's owner Red Bull revealed a deal had been struck for a July 6 date.

The energy drinks company issued a short statement to Austrian media outlets on Tuesday morning saying that it had concluded negotiations for F1 to return to the circuit.

It said: "Dietrich Mateschitz [Red Bull owner] and Bernie Ecclestone have reached agreement to the effect that Formula 1 will come back to Styria next year."

Austria last hosted a Formula 1 race in 2003, prior to it falling off the calendar when redevelopment plans at the Spielberg circuit stalled.

Its new owner Red Bull spent time considering what to do with the venue, prior to a major investment push that led to it reopening as the newly named Red Bull Ring in 2011.

Mateschitz has made no secret of the fact that he wanted to attract F1, and there were discussions last winter about a race taking place there this year as a replacement for New Jersey.

In the end a deal could not be agreed for 2013, but it now appears that Red Bull has pushed on for next year instead.

The return of the Austrian Grand Prix will need to be formally approved by the FIA later this year, when it rubber stamps the 2014 calendar at a meeting of its World Motor Sport Council.

Good - the return of a European race rather than sacrificing another one for a "glam" destination!

The return of not only any European race, but potentially my favourite circuit ever, along with reconfigured Silverstone, Monza and Spa.

It's the news Ferrari dreaded most.

Bet they won't pull any "Fernando is faster than you" moves there.

Who knows, in all honesty, do they care what fans think (they have done it multiple times). But this is another debate to have. For know it is great that the A1 Ring may be back on the calendar.

In all seriousness though, I'm almost certain this is step [insert number here] in the eventual death of the New Jersey dream. It just isn't going to happen.

There's been too many stumbling points for New Jersey, and with Austria taking what would've been the likely slot for New Jersey makes me believe that the end is coming for pushing this race. There's safety issues which they can't seem to fix, travel problems for too many people etc., so I think it's game over.

I know there was small talk of bringing Austria back at the end of last year, but I'd forgotten about it. This announcement seems completely from left field.

It's far from a snoozing track, its wide, open, flowing corners and straights. DRS will work beautifully round here, one to turn two then to turn 3.

Here's a lap with Schumi in 2002 i believe.

Far from. Usually has good races, the track can be tight at times but a good couple of long straights in to sharp corners tend to go well for overtaking.

I'm hoping that the exit of turn 2 has been modified, for those who don't know the track, the exit was tight enough that the cars ran off the circuit completely to get a good run out up the long straight.

Words can't describe how much I look forward to it though

Impressive layout. I just hope they don't replace the gravel traps with tarmac run off areas.

It would safer with the high speeds to have gravel traps in my opinion, especially into turn 2 and 3

Not sure on that actually. At high speeds, I keep thinking of Kovalainen [2008] and Buemi [2011], neither of their incidents were slowed down much at all from gravel traps as the stones just bounced them up rather than allowed the tyres to grip.

Short run off olat that corner in spain though, with A1 ring i thinj it's a much bigger run off, enough for a car to stop, plus the exit of the corner is quite wide, A run off would mean a car would just slide and at 200mph i wouldn't want that, especially right at the top of the hill
