If you notice that your avatar is gone, I've reported this issue. This will occur with people who have uploaded their avatar image to our server.

UPDATE: Profile images should now be loading across the site. Thanks so much for your patience!

Good thing I use a off site image host. :P I'll be sure to let users know of this problem if they are experiencing it.

Speaking of avatars, I have seen that LiveFyre doesn't quite keep up with avatar changes. Some users (myself included) recently changed out avatars yet livefyre still seems to have our old avatars appear. My apologies for possibly "hijacking" the thread.

It seems like userimage.gamespot.com has been kind of dragging lately. This seems to be on the various banners and video stills as well as avatars. Images will often load, eventually, but sometimes they don't. Tonight I checked a user's banner that was not loading, and it was actually returning an HTTP 504 after about 34 seconds, with an HTML body that mentioned "Reference #97.744f32d0.1347346256.eb16d23". The full response was:
HTTP/1.1 504 Gateway Time-out Server: AkamaiGHost Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/html Content-Length: 175 Vary: Accept-Encoding Expires: Tue, 11 Sep 2012 06:50:56 GMT Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2012 06:50:56 GMT Connection: keep-alive <HTML><HEAD><TITLE>Error</TITLE></HEAD><BODY> An error occurred while processing your request.<p> Reference&#32;&#35;97&#46;744f32d0&#46;1347346256&#46;eb16d23 </BODY></HTML>
The banner was this one. I wouldn't be surprised if other images from userimage that appear to be missing are failing in similar ways. I have not been able to get that particular banner to load, so I don't really know if this is intermittent or not.

As an update, my own avatar and profile banner were missing when I showed up about 30 minutes ago. The responses were fast HTTP 404s (about 100ms), so the page finished loading quickly enough, but the images were just missing. Then out of the blue, about 20 minutes later, the correct images loaded up fairly quickly (about 30ms and 190ms). Some others are still returning 404s. I'll see if any of them come back eventually.

Have you tried refreshing the page or clearing your internet cache? That could also be the problem.

Hi there,

Thanks for looking into this problem! I've also encountered an error when trying to upload new images ... I've made sure dimensions and size are perfect too. Yet still I get this message/error screen.

Not Found

The requested URL /cgi/accept_user_image.php was not found on this server.

Thanks in advance for any help!

is there any progress on the matter?

It's sounding like userimage.gamespot.com is returning 404s for just about everything now. If there are still any gamespot-hosted profile images from userimage that are working it might be interesting to hear about that; otherwise, it seems that anything and everything that used to be served from userimage is gone. As an example, attempting to load my avatar results in this response:
HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found Server: Apache Content-Length: 255 Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1 Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2012 21:59:30 GMT Connection: keep-alive Vary: Accept-Encoding <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN"> <html><head> <title>404 Not Found</title> </head><body> <h1>Not Found</h1> <p>The requested URL /images/icon/4/9/20377187334617222874691635718094/icon.gif was not found on this server.</p> </body></html>
This no longer appears to be intermittent. I have not seen my avatar load in over 24 hours. As mentioned, this is also affecting all attempts to upload any profile image. Uploading a profile image attempts an HTTP POST to http://userimage.gamespot.com/cgi/accept_user_image.php, which is currently always failing with an HTTP 404 response that is essentially identical in format to the one shown above, adjusted to refer to accept_user_image.php.

I've been posting here for YEARS, and this site is more screwed than it's ever been. "OOPS!" notifications are now a constant occurrence, I really wonder why I haven't just dumped this site entirely...

... I guess it's that I'm just as lazy as the techs at GS's parent company who handle the maintenance of this website, and don't want to be bothered with trying to start up on a different game discussion group...

Look, I ultimately don't care if my avatar comes up, I'll use one of the boring, MOR, brain-dead pics GS has in stock... But for the love of all that is sanity, can this site PLEASE un-**** itself???

PLEASE???

:(

For what it's worth, I get the "URL Not Found at ... " message when I try to upload my smiling chimp pic. It's nice to have an avatar you can pick out when scanning a thread for friends and such. I would LIKE it to return to how it was. But if this is the New Gamespot World Order, then so-be-it. I s'pose.

It might be nice to get a notification about "Oh Well, No More User Image Upload Hosting At GS" or something of the sort, if this is how it's going to be - Instead of everyone guessing.

I picture the guy in "Airplane!" holding the pulled plug for the runway lights, saying "Just Kidding!" when I think about who's in charge of keeping this site running correctly...

I asked the technical team for a status and will follow-up once I have more details.

Thanks for the help JodyR. Also, the forums keep timing out with "OOPS message.." pretty often. (both at work and home). Maybe upgrade the servers? :P
#45 Posted by isshiah (771 posts) -

in the 5 years i've been on this site, i have likely tripled my number of 'oops' messages in just a few days.

I totally agree. I've been here since 2003 and never had so many issues in a year like this one. Who the hell is in charge in tech support? Maybe we should all use a screenshoot of the oops page as signatures until someone does something about it?

it hasn't ruined my life, but this is a weird annoyance that i haven't seen before. i can't change my signature, i tried to the other day and deleted a picture accidentally, so i'm stuck with telling people my secret identity.

@JodyR - do you think the topic title should be broadened to something like "Profile images from userimage.gamespot.com return 404" or maybe just "Avatars / banners / sig / etc. not displaying"? The current behavior from userimage.gamespot.com does not seem to be limited to avatar images in particular.

Uh, aren't we all shady? :D

Anyhow, any updates?
