OK there's definitely something wrong here but I'm not seeing it. I'm sure there's something if you guys are reporting it. So PLEASE give me step-by-step what you are doing, where it goes wrong, and what you expect.

  • Clicks the "Link" button
  • Clicks on the box for URL, right-click, paste the URL I want to link to.
  • Clicks "Create a Link"
  • Receives this message

@Master_Live:

Hows this

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-31765672

Both ways of inserting a link. Using Firefox. Both worked just fine. I'm really confused about why you are having so much trouble. Can you try typing that link in? Maybe something is inserting a weird hidden character? I'm so baffled right now!

Ok, lets try this again because now I feel like an idiot and might have been wasting your time all this time or you mine.

When I click on the BBC link you just post it opens to this url:

See? Without the "http" stuff.

Lets call this Exhibit A

But if I click, copy it and paste it here directly (without trying to use the "link" feature) it appears like this:

http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-31765672

Lets call this Exhibit B

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I take the url I get from Exhibit B (which is what I get from "right clicking and copying" from the url box which apparently includes the "http" stuff) and use the new and improved "link" box then I get this:

See?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But if I do the same exact same and erase the "http" thing before clicking "Create Link" then the problem is solved.

See? Problem resolved!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It just seems that GS users will have a new extra level of annoyance by having to erase the "http:" thing every time we want to link to a page instead of simple pasting the url directly like it was before since you have pre-loaded the "http" thing already.

Problem solved, sorry to had have taken so much of your time.

That's still a bit weird. I didn't have to remove the protocol from the URL when I added it.

@Master_Live: have you tried a full link address, so instead of "vox.com/..." it's "http://www.vox.com/..." or maybe just "www.vox.com/..."?

Let me try cause I was having trouble linking an article on a game Quantum Break being delay on System Wars. This is the link I was trying to put up: http://www.gamerevolution.com/news/quantum-break-likely-delayed-to-2016-31697

That is the link I'm having trouble inserting the link on System Wars. I copy/paste it into inserting link and I got the same message that Master_Live is having. I'm using Chrome Google and not Firefox so I'm assuming it has something to do with Chrome Google I'm using.

Thanks for reporting this everyone. We're looking into how we can strike a balance to help users have an easier time with adding links.

May I ask why the linking system was "fixed" (ROFLMAO) in the first place? It was fine before. What is the point in trying to fix something that doesn't need to be fixed? :/ The ironic part is that it is now broken.

I'm using Safari, and I'm having the same problems. I cleared my cache, removed the "http" from the link, and it still says "You did not enter a valid link."

Hey there. So I know that it is really, really frustrating to have to adjust for what seems like no reason, but no need to post like that. That being said, I've added your feedback to my weekly report to our dev team regarding this change.

In the future, please be more respectful when submitting reports.

Hey all,

Since we first made this change to our link tool, we've made some further changes based on your feedback:

  • URLs missing the protocol (i.e. 'http://') used to be considered invalid. I'm told that this isn't actually new and that our link tool has always been like this, but in any case, we've adjusted this so if the protocol is left out, we'll infer it and add it in for you.
  • For whatever reason, URLs that didn't end in a trailing slash (i.e. 'http://www.google.com' vs. 'http://www.google.com/') used to be considered invalid. This was a bug that we missed during testing, but was fixed rather quickly after we released.
  • We changed the name of the "To the Internets" tab to "To a URL" due to popular internal demand, and we regret its original name
  • We now default focus on the URL field or the search field, depending on which tab is selected ("To a URL" or "To GameSpot Content"), when the link tool is opened to remove an additional click and make it easier to use.

Within the next two weeks, we will also be defaulting the link tool to the "To a URL" tab in the forums so as to remove yet another click and make it even easier to use. This will also help users who aren't aware that the default tab was "To GameSpot Content" and were trying erroneously to use it to link to a URL.

All of this is to say that we hear your feedback loud and clear, despite my lack of posting in this thread thus far. Sorry for the inconvenience this has been so far!

@Master_Live, @Snugenz, @angeldeb82, @operaphantom21, @gamerguru100, @davillain-

I am unfortunately unable to replicate your problems of linking to URLs in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. Are you still experiencing this? If so, could you please clear your cache and cookies and try again? If the problem persists, can you reply here with your OS, browser, browser version, and a list of active extensions you're using?

Thanks!

@LarkAnderson: Okay I figure out the problem. I need to eliminate the http:// that's been causing me not to post links so yeah, it's the http:// that needs to be erase in order to finally post links. Sorry for the confusion.

@davillain-: Good to hear that this is working for you, but that's not how it's supposed to work--if you leave the protocol on, it should work just fine.

If you could post or PM me your OS, browser, browser version, and a list of active extensions you're using (in addition to an example of a URL you're unable to link to without removing the "http://") I can investigate further.

Thanks!

Thanks for reporting this. We've pushed some code to help fix this issue. If you're still having issues with hyperlinking, please submit your report to this thread here.
