Surprisingly fun hi-speed arcade racing game with destructible environments. A few flaws but nothing breaks the game.

The framerate runs at a nice clip on the PS2 version, which was a concern of mine. In the later races when you are driving the fastest cars the draw-in is seldom noticeable even with all 8 cars racing on the track. The lighting effects and particle effects are good. Al in all, a nice programming feat on the PS2.

The racing is in some ways better than the burnout games because of the destructible environments and alternate paths on the tracks. There's plenty of different cars to pick from and plenty of upgrades to buy for the cars. The track design was the biggest sruprise; there's some nice arcade-style track design here with ramps and obstacles everywhere. Driving through the first floor of an office building or mall is part of the fun. There's easily over 20 racing tracks though some are variants of each other. Some negatives. The biggest issue is that the game is very forgiving if you reset your car during a race. And this is the kind of game that has you resetting several times in every race. Because your opponents are trying to crash you its not unusual for you to get spun to the side of the road and upside down. So you hit the reset and maybe only 2 cars passed you. All of this means you can win or lose a race if one of the opponent cars decides to take you out just before the finish line. It also means you can easily pass cars after you reset your car if you've got one more lap remaining in the race. hince, the racing is fun but its not the most difficult or challenging racing game either. The mini games are to me at least only momentarily amusing because you basically have to launch the driver at the right time or get no points at all. Or the mini-game is just too hard, like the poker game where you have to launch your driver at specific cards. Good luck with that! I'd rather race some more. The gamespot reviews mentions the "floaty" controlls but I liked the controls a lot after about 15 minutes of gameplay.
