Feel the power of picking off enemies from high above.

User Rating: 8.5 | Fire Blade XBOX
There are surprisingly few helicopter combat games for the X-Box. As a matter of fact, Fire Blade is the only one I'm aware of, although there are probably one or two more. Regardless, Fire Blade is a solid selection if you're looking for something in this genre.

The storyline is pretty standard, but managed to at least keep me interested. Fire Blade is an anti-terror squadron, which consists of helicopter units, as well as special ops & other units. This game obviously focuses on the choppers, although there are missions where you pick up and drop off, or provide cover for the other units. The game maintains some realism by not making you out to be Rambo with propellars. You don't do it all. For instance, many of the missions will involve going in to clear out specific targets, so infantry can go do the rest. It makes you feel integral, but without overdoing it.

The graphics are excellent. The choppers themselves as well as the environment looks borderline real at times. The enemies are also detailed pretty well, considering how many there are on the screen at once at times.

The sounds are pretty good. The voice acting is a little over the top, but there's not a lot of voice in the game anyway, mostly just action.

The gameplay is where the game really shines. You control two different choppers throughout the game. They're not too different, one is bigger & heavier, and a little more cumbersome to control. But overall they are both fun to control once you get the hang of it. You have a variety of weapons to choose from. You have the minigun, which has unlimited ammo, but takes a while to destroy armored vehicles. You also have limited missiles, heat-seeking "fire & forget" missiles, an EMP gun to disable vehicles stealthily, and a rail gun. You don't have all these weapons all the time, it depends on the mission. You also have turbo jets with limited fuel, to help you get somewhere quick or to get you out of sticky situations. Your chopper also has a stealth option, where it goes almost undectable, with the tradeoff that you can't fire weapons without the risk of being seen, and you fly a lot slower.

There are only a couple down sides I saw to this game. First of all, occasionally I would fail a mission with no explanation. And I couldn't really fix what I did wrong, because I didn't know what I did, so it resulted in more failures. There are also no mid-level saves. The missions generally aren't extremely long, so this usually isn't a big deal. But there are a couple missions I just couldn't wait to be over.

Overall, if you're looking for something along the lines of this game, I think it will satisfy.
