Finally, a REAL Story Driven MMO.
Let me start by saying that I played the original FFXIV for about 3 hours before I just gave up in frustration. THIS is a completely different experience. While there is still room for improvement, especially on the UI side, it's a HUGE improvement.
The graphics in this game are beyond beautiful, and the attention to detail in the crafting of the world really shines. While you are travelling from place-to-place, you can't but help to take in the beauty around you. It REALLY is breathtaking.
However, what keeps this game fresh and makes it stand apart from the crowd is the running storyline. With some superb cinematic cut-scenes it really feels like I am playing a single player RPG, but in a living breathing world with real people.
The combat system is great, and requires some real thought, especially when taking on bosses. You can't just spam like in most MMOs.
The crafting system (though I'm only a novice at it), is also very well thought out and also requires strategy and thought when making items. Also, because you can be any class at any time by changing what's in your hand, you can change to a botanist and go find lumber etc., then come back and change to carpenter and make bows, etc. It's a great system which allows you to take a break from adventuring to enjoy other pursuits.
The only thing I wish this game had was full voice-overs. There are SOME voice-overs, but they are few and far between. I hope this is something they will add over time, because it really helps to create a sense of immersion while playing.
It's been a while since I've paid monthly for an MMO, but I think it's time to start again. When I play this game I really feel the love that went into it. If it continues to develop and grow with content, voice-overs, and some UI improvements then I will be with this game for some time to come.
