Changes That Seem All Too Familiar - Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Jonathan Toyad

Sweeping changes to Final Fantasy XIV may surprise and delight fans, but the new additions are old hat to those who have played other recent MMOs.

In 2010, the release of Final Fantasy XIV Online was met with heavy criticism. Impressive presentation aside, the MMO was riddled with issues, so much so that Square Enix eventually apologized for the quality of the game. The company promised a complete revamp, and hired a new producer who worked on the online-focused Dragon Quest X to spearhead development.

The result is Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. After our lengthy journey through the closed beta sessions of this new version of FFXIV Online using a Lalafell lancer, it's obvious that the producer and his team meant serious business in wiping the slate clean. A Realm Reborn is a completely different experience from the original Final Fantasy XIV. A new story, new gameplay, and a new graphics engine will make this title feel fresh to Final Fantasy fans, particularly those who were longtime players of Final Fantasy XI. However, the new additions to A Realm Reborn may not be eye-openers for MMO veterans, especially those who have played recent releases like Guild Wars 2 and Rift.

While the concepts of random encounters and daily quests aren't new, they are fresh ideas if your experience with the genre is limited to the Final Fantasy MMOs. Take the FATE (Full Active Time Event) system, for example, which is similar to random quests found in games like Guild Wars 2. While players are wandering around the enchanted hollows of Gridania, random FATE events will occur, such as an outbreak of monkey-like Opo-opos stealing coffee beans from a village or a gargantuan horde of Ixali insurgents storming a nearby fort. Players in the game world can jump in and earn more experience or loot by joining in the slaughter of these mobs. To reap the benefits, however, players will need to be about the same level as the requirements stated on the FATE event. High-level adventurers who complete a low-level FATE will get absolutely nothing for their troubles.

Another feature that's reworked is the Levequest system, which works exactly like daily quests in World of Warcraft. Once players have been to their first Guildleve club, they can start doing Levequests. These are entirely optional and do not come with a fatigue system like in the original FFXIV. The objectives for Levequests come in multiple consecutive forms; once a task in a Levequest is completed, players move on to the next until the entire mission is over or time runs out. Players can get bigger rewards if they complete these, though these quests can take up more time than usual and are meant for large groups.

A Realm Reborn also introduces a system called the hunting log, a feature that's familiar to anyone who's played Ragnarok Online 2. Players go through a checklist of enemies they need to kill for the log. Killing a required set of enemies will net adventurers extra experience. Players can take their sweet time and wander around Gridania at their leisure while doing these logs, as they're meant to reward those who explore the sights of the game world.

The new game play additions may be familiar, but they still make for an enjoyable experience. Our play session during the beta weekend was filled with similarly-leveled pugilists and spellcasters joining in unison as we beat down the aforementioned Opo-opos and Ixali birdmen until we had fulfilled the required amount of mob deaths. The up-close offensive capabilities of the lancer we used help complement the ranged attacks of our temporary partners during several FATE missions. Visually, Square Enix again show that they are masters of their craft. The sights of Gridania's huge forest areas and towns are easy on the eyes, while the background music that plays during exploration are relaxing to the ears.

Players seeking for something new in an MMO may not find the FATE and Levequest systems groundbreaking. However, the developers promise that there are more changes to come, like Chocobo-back battles, new player-versus-player options, and other nostalgic additions like enemy Behemoths and Iron Giants (from past FF titles), as well as Magitek Armor mounts (from FFVI). The new additions have done a lot to raise A Realm Reborn closer to modern standards for MMOs, now the challenge remains to elevate it even further.

Never had FFXI online, so it will not hurt me that much if I'm going to try this game.

im not an mmo fan but if this game is good and has a lot of final fantasy aspects from previous ones id pick it up

Why don't they take a totally new direction and make a violent final fantasy or something that isn't turn based, like Dirge of Cerberus or Kingdom Hearts coz that out really well, I reckon they can do it

@Uiltetwr That's the direction Versus XIII is going in, its much more realistic and modern than any other Final Fantasy game, with dozens of in game locations being modeled after real world places. And its combat is supposed to be a mix of what was seen in Advent Children and Kingdom Hearts (a lot of the new gameplay mechanics in DDD were supposedly unused ideas from Versus, but still good enough to not discard)

Although the graphics look good, I don't see myself coming back for the FATE and levelquest systems again.

Wouldn't it be better for Square-Enix to release this on the PS4  rather than the PS3 since it's coming out by the end of this year. Visually, it looks great but i'm not a fan of MMOs the time investment is too huge for me and it looks like the hope to make up for the let down that FF XIV was

All I want to see is an MMO that focuses on grouping.  I'm sick of MMOs that are glorified single player games full of tons of solo ez-mode content.  I'm sick of low quality players that don't care about the genre, don't care about grouping, and that want to solo - go play single player games.

@Voqar I'm not really a fan of how S-E does their games, but if any game is likely to reinforce group play, it's FFIV. Ever play FFXI? That freaking game was pretty much impossible to play solo after the first few levels.

@Voqar I'm sick of games that require grouping to make significant advancements.  They COULD set up a system that adjusts monster strength depending on whether you're in a party or playing solo.  As a red mage in Final Fantasy XI, even with the experience point boosts in the updates over the past couple of years, it's hard to actually gain levels fighting regular world monsters when playing solo, and sometimes I don't want to commit to a party and end up feeling trapped in it for three or four hours if my leaving the party would disband it for lack of a replacement.  I get bored with endless, mind-numbing grinding for experience.  It takes a while for a red mage to kill something, and part of being a red mage is survival skill using magic.  But you get no experience for the time you spent keeping yourself alive while henpecking a monster to death.  Some high-powered thief, ranger or dark knight can kill three mobs in the same time it takes a red mage to kill one.  So those other classes can gain solo experience three times faster.

Maybe FFXIV will be different, but in FFXI, you get no experience points for completing most of the quests, unless the reward is an experience book.  But quests that give experience books are comparatively rare.

Fortunately there are now ways to make pretty quick FFXI experience gains (Campaign) if your level is high enough.  But grinding solo from 40-65 is just slow slow slow.

I'm not against some goals requiring a party, but then in a way, I am if some huge boss-monster could be instanced and then whittled down to a strength suitable for someone who likes playing solo.

Sometimes parties are a headache.  First, you have to find party members.  Then you have to wait for them all to gather in a location.  Sometimes the wait can be an hour and a half while people collect their gear, buy food, buy medicine, go to the bathroom, tend to screaming kids in the next room.  And then there are the people who suddenly say, "Sorry, gotta go."  And then the party is sometimes left too weak to continue and the mission or quest fails, especially if you're in some instanced dungeon nobody can get into to replace the deserter.

And then there's the issue of latecomers to the game who need to get missions accomplished -- missions others have had to run dozens of times for newer players, and that kind of thing can get boring.  In Final Fantasy XI, I helped a lot of people, and developing a reputation as a helper left me getting requests for help as soon as I logged on looking forward to crafting or leveling up skills.  I tried to avoid asking for help unless what I was after was literally impossible to do alone, such as acquiring certain pieces of Artifact gear.  I *HATE* asking others for help.  I didn't get Rank 5 (which gives airship passes) until I could solo it at Lv.50.  But you can ride airships at Lv.30, so naturally, there were lots of people constantly asking for help to get Rank 5 at Lv.30.

So all these problems could be remedied with "floating strength" monsters that become weaker or stronger depending on the number of people fighting them.  That said, parties would still have to go to higher-level areas to find challenges so they wouldn't all run out into beginner areas at Lv.70 and expect a challenge.

@FFBruno Because they didn't let anyone down with the original FFXIV, the game they had to remake because it was so horrible?

Lets keep the criticism articles to ourselves until the game ACTUALLY comes out. I have alot of faith in the Final Fantasy series. I mean come on since when does a company that produces a shit game apologize and then completely remake it for the fans. You have to give Square Enix more credit I'm sure it'll be an exceptional game with the improvements it needed.

@breathnac your right, the only thing that i hate about the old final fantasy xiv is the combat system, the craft system, the name of the classes and your gear breaks and logically you need to fix them with hard to find tools.

FFXI was a great MMO before the new producer stepped in , It had nothing to do with other MMORPGs because the gear you obtain stayed relevant always. I said was because at the moment the only uniqueness it had is gone. The new producer in this last expansion has made 95% of your current equipment obsolete and is turning the game into a gear reset type grind every expansion ala WoW. Will FFXIV be like this? we do not know yet but FFXI sure left a sour taste in many peoples mouth. Many FFXI players play XIV but as it stands alot are not going to even try it out. If they managed to piss off costumers that has been with them for 11 years i can definetely expect anything from this company.

@YeahBuddy90  The FFfanboys will be there one day one without a doubt. There is nothing unique about progressive gear. All MMO's have one grind or another some are just better at hiding it.

@DMND @shojikun87 there is no Pugilist in phase 1 & 2, there is only Lancer, Conjurer, Archer, only special occasion for this phase 1 & 2 they add Gladiator.

Levequest doesn't work like Dailies quest, Levequest has allowance that regenerate every 12 hours up to 99 slot.

There is no chocobo-back battles, instead there will be Chocobo Buddy System, where chocobo fight beside you. Not riding a chocobo and fighting.

Agreed that this yahoo did not TEST Beta. But I expect nothing more from Gamespot really. It's like the "TMZ" of the video game world, bloated with meaningless commentary and nothing to the likeness of "News".

Im not too sure this guy actually spent time playing the Beta.  He mentions that he grinded out with pugilists and spellcasters killing whatever mobs I cant remember.. Come on now since when have pugilists been added and why didn't he mention the hunting log at all since that is obviously what he was referencing? It seems he just took a bunch of old reviews and tried to merge them into one.. This is just a lazy journalists who didn't have time to put forth the effort that his job title should encompass.  Gamespot needs to check their facts!

Final Fantasy XI also has a hunting Log for NMs . The Hunt Registry is a red Feild of Valor book in which you can sign up to participate in a Hunt. The objective of a Hunt is to kill a NM in whichever area you signed up to participate. Once the monster is defeated, you will receive a message similar to FoV page completion

Just saying and i think its older then Ragnarok 2

Please learn to research

Lash_1382
Lash_1382

@Inigo1Montoya thats not really a hunting log tho. thats an event type situation.

Fields of Valor is the new questing system placed in the game that allows players to be rewarded with handsome amounts of experience and gil for taking down monsters in certain areas of the world in addition to the standard exp and rewards that the monster already gives, much like a World of Warcraft "kill quest." The difference is in completing these quests the player will receive a new type of currency, tabs, that give access to temporary buffs and home nation teleports at any Field Manual placed in the game.

and yes it predates Ragnarok 2 by a year but its not the same thing.

I wanted to add this also just a thought really

Final Fantasy Treasures of Aht Urhgan came out April 20 , 2006 it has a spawned Active time event called Besieged
Final Fantasy Wings of the Goddess came out Nov. 20th 2007 It has a spawned Active time events Where you talked to a NPC and fought off attacking hordes of mobs and NMs that were attacking outposts

Rift came out March 2011 and has Active time events .

Sooo would it not be safe to say Final Fantasy's FATEs are nothing more then a upgrade to what they have already done in XI? Rather then saying it copied RIFT?

synfrag
synfrag

@Inigo1Montoya Besieged was actually scheduled and based on conditions. As for WotG campaign battles were random and could be related to FATEs.

FFXI actually laid a lot of groundwork for future MMOs, as did Eve, NWN, AO, EQ and even WoW. What we see these days is all a culmination of past games features. There never will be a groundbreaking MMO from probably 5 years ago forward until we reach the point (and I'm sorry for referencing this) Sword Art Online ie Virtual Reality MMO.

There will never be a "WoW killer" as blizzard themselves can't even kill their own game without turning the switch off. Which they will never do as it is akin to turning the lights on cockroaches, everyone will scatter and they will lose their behemoth market share.

@synfrag

Kind of hard to be a WoW killer when your game is in China were most of the people in the world live. You think FFXIV:ARR could tap in them numbers if released in China ?

Brean24
Brean24

@Inigo1Montoya

China has one seventh of the world's population. Of that 1.3 billion people about a fourth(369 million) have internet.  The number of actual gamers is far below that. So  saying China is where most of the people in the world live is a slight exaggeration.

shojikun87
shojikun87

@synfrag @Inigo1Montoya dont worry, even if it goes to China, it will be their "OWN" servers, China wont want its people play with others.

So if SE do decide to place FFXIV in china, it will entirely be a seperated server. And i wish they do tap into China.

synfrag
synfrag

@Inigo1Montoya ARR will get numbers, and will hold them unlike most MMOs due to actual lore, story and challenge. I would actually hope it not go to China as most MMOs that do are riddled with RMT. WoW and Aion are great examples of that.
