Yea one of the things about FFXI Online that surpasses all FFs and rpgs to date is it's massive immersive world.

Even with a zone based structure (loading between zones), it really feels like a more natural, massive and living connected world (further enhanced by the players populating it, roaming mobs, real-time weather, and the unpredictable happenings that could occur.)

And even though mmorpgs have established worlds like that before and after FFXI Online, FFXI really takes artistic beauty and tasteful detail to greater levels (further boosted by its loveable atmosphere that sets it apart from generic fantasy worlds. )

FFXI still has the only true massive open world in the franchise (yea even FF12 was just FF11 Lite in comparison.)

only FFXIV ARR can rival FFXI's world (and perhaps surpass it in some ways)

I'm sure the FFXIV ARR world as a whole will be designed that delivers a great sense of exploration, travels, and overall epicness of living and breathing that world, even before the expansions come along.

So yea I been thinking on some epic travels parties could do in their first days, maybe traveling from one town to the next on foot could be a really magical experience,

or even traveling in some unexplored direction for many interesting discoveries, dangers and experiences!!

Yea there will be those crystals warp travel, but overall, there could be plenty of situations to travel on foot, sometimes on mounts, and overall experience the world's greatness. Even revisiting locations through normal travels instead of warping can be fun and immersive and can be rewarding in it's own ways.

Although there is a little assumption in your post, I fully and wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment, and I hope you're right.

I don't plan on warping much until I am thoroughly done with an area.

yea I think people can't use the warp stations anyway until they at least traveled/explored/entered that area first and used them once.

Kind of like the crag crystals in FFXI, you couldn't warp to the crystals without naturally travelling and collecting that item from those crystals first (then you had to get a teleport from a mage with that spell to warp there.)

well FFXIV ARR nixes the mage requirement to warp, but it will definitely encourage players to travel naturally to crystal warp point locations at least once.

I think the maps also are blank until you travel further in those areas so the minimap records and details those locations, which is very cool. I liked FFXI maps (which was a more hardcore approach to aquiring them and navigation),

but the FFXIV ARR map system sounds convenient yet fair.

I think airships are instant travel this time but there might be some natural airship travel too.

the FFXI airship and boat rides are unlike anything else. ^_^

Yup I agree, I will be exploring every nook and cranny, already explored as much as possible in the alpha, and made some friends doing it, good times, no - GREAT times!

I hope, hope, HOPE that there is natural boat and rail, (I think this was rumored), travel. If not, I'm actually gonna be pretty disappointed in that regard.

I heard 1.0 had like 8 or so areas, and FFXIV ARR will start with about 48 zones (persistent and instanced).

yea I prefer persistent zones over instanced zones, but I understand dungeons going instanced now, at least most of the outdoor and city areas will be persistent public zones.

treasure chests / loot containers are not common like FF12.

in FF11, the places that have chests required a key (and I think Thieves have a way to unlock them too.) And some chests have random locations that change. Some chests are quest specific and others can give money or something.

Didn't really mess with them outside of AF gear items.

not sure how treasure chests work in FFXIV ARR.

going to have to disagree with you on this one. Although I never played final fantasy 11, I had friends who did, friends whom I had seen play the game.

I on the other hand played World of Warcraft, and i have to say during the days of Vanilla when there weren't flying mounts and all that jazz, the game felt much much larger than final fantasy 11, and loaned its self to exploration far more. Pretty much every thing was accessible, and exploration really felt like something you could really do in the game.

For example, you could go around exploring an area and discover things you'd never seen before, and although they were small they added a certain element to the game that brought it to life. It could just be finding a tent with a fire going; no NPCs were there, nothing quest related, just out tucked away in a little corner.

The world its self felt massively huge too, and really loaned its self to a massively epic adventure just from traveling. If you were just running on foot it could take you forever to get from point A to point B if it was a good distance away, and even with mounts it could take an exceptionally long time if you didn't want to pay the steep prices of the gryphon rides.

Never saw that when my friends played XI, and when I asked them about exploration and the like they didn't really seem to understand what I was asking. When I asked them if they could see a mountain in the distance and could go to that mountain and try to climb up it - they said that they couldn't.

Any way, I really hope XIV is impressively massive and loans its self to little qualities which make exploration fun.

Kid didn't know what to put in his signature; didn't think it would be this hard. So he just typed some stuff, and kept typing till there wasn't any space left.

exploration isn't about climbing mountains like Skyrim, but it's still very open and very detailed enviornments with zones connected in a way where combining massiveness with zones that can branch out to different regions, leads to a really epic world to explore and travel in. You don't need to be able to stand on every inch of the land to have a massive open world. Also sandbox rpgs like Skyrim are tiny space compared to mmorpgs like FFXI Online. And I'm sure FFXIV ARR will feel even more massive and more room for exploration than The Elder Scrolls rpgs. (of course don't expect to pick up cups and plates and move objects around rooms, but mmorpgs like FFXI and FFXIV ARR have their own sense of massiveness, interaction and exploration qualities.)

I found numerous abandoned fires in XI. You shouldn't really comment on specifics in a game you've never played.
