- Nov 17, 2012 8:53 pm GMTHerein shall be chronicled the continuing adventures of destrian, wheresatari, LewdDolphin21, and myself, plus anyone else crazy enough to join us, as we take on and 5-star all 64 missions without using stage 9 of the Crystarium. Every mission except 55 and 64 will be completed without even opening up stage 9 (those two missions can't be attempted without stage 9 being open). We'll also be trying to kill Shaolong Gui and Long Gui. We are allowing equipment upgrades and TP usage, but we are not using shrouds.

In my case, I'm trying to avoid extensive upgrading. I already completed all missions at stage 8 without upgrades, but now I'm currently seeing how many can actually be done at stage 7 (primary roles only) with minimal upgrades. Thus far, 1-19 + 32 have been done with only Black Belt *'s as the upgraded equipment (and maybe a few of them could be done with General Belt Lv. 1's in their stead). I just did 30 with Black Belt *'s and t1* weapons; I experimented a tiny bit with no upgrades, but the less efficient Cures and the increased damage intake makes it pretty luck reliant and thus not so feasible a presentable strategy.

Divisibility by four? Ha! I mean, even perfect squares are divisible by four!
Currently playing: Final Fantasy XIII, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. - Nov 17, 2012 11:13 pm GMTHaha, I see you came around to using Vanille instead of Light. Her healing is very helpful indeed, but her damage seems to leave something to be desired...stupid -ra spells>.< Why the Orochi Rod, and what does it come from? I personally took to upgrading the Healer's Staff for even better healing, but that Adamantite sucks. I also used an Upgraded Umbra. If you think about it, the 5 UCRs you'll need for his PC will cover the Adamantite...though I see you decided against a perma Sen.

-The Lord Jesus Christ. John 14 verse 6. - Nov 18, 2012 3:36 am GMTI actually prefer Lightning--she and Snow cover the buffing much more efficiently--but Vanille's healing does make it easier to survive and that's arguably better for consistency. The Orochi Rod (transformed Rod of Thorns) is her 2nd best non-Ironstrike option for Strength and it's so much better for Magic with such a tiny loss in Strength vs. the Hunter's Rod (transformed Binding Rod) that it seemed the superior choice.
The Orochi Rod holds nearly a 250 point Magic advantage over the Physician's Staff. Given the lack of +Magic accessories, that is very close to compensating for the +20% boost to Cure/Cura, although it does not match the boost to Curasa/Curaja. If you're going to have Vanille spend time as a COM in this fight, I think the Strength is worth more than the slight healing loss.
Of course, my latest runs I've been experimenting with no Cerberus again, so I should probably go back to the Malboro Wand or try out the Physician's Staff.
That said, none of my strategies have been anywhere near consistent, and I'm starting to think that "Tortoise every Multicast" is inherently inconsistent without Magus Bracelets. Sometimes the Raktavija cast faster than others, and sometimes they get nicely synced into an alternating pattern. If they start casting quickly with that alternating pattern, it's possible to just die because you never get a chance to heal, especially if Slow and or Shell falls off. Even with everything in place, a couple of 3x Ruingas and 4xAeroras can just chew through your HP.
Shellra is the maybe worth exploring here, although I worry about the added maintenance needed to keep it active. That said, the last time I experimented with Shellra, I had one fewer active character helping to maintain the chain gauge.
If that doesn't work out, then the last thing I haven't tried that doesn't involve absurd levels of upgrading (Magus Bracelets and/or t3 weapons) is going back to the perma-SEN plan with a Solaris on Snow to see if Improved Ward II provides sufficient consistency. And that isn't something I've been anxious to try--isn't that what you've been trying and having difficulties with, wheresatari?
Actually, it's not true that that's the absolute last step. Another thing we could do is go back to the 1x Rak fight and try to really break down its attack patterns. If we could figure out a way to anticipate when we would get short breaks vs. long breaks between attacks, that information could be very useful. Ideally we'd want to line up our first stagger with a long break from both Raks. This is essentially what happens in TEMDCF's speed run (which incidentally I don't see us matching even with t3 weapons because shrouds are awesome).
I guess I'll give Shellra a try next time I do the fight. For the record, my current paradigms include Relentless Assault (Snow COM) over Tri-disaster and Ruthless (Snow COM) over Cerberus while keeping Perseverance (Fang SAB) over Discretion. Ruthless does make it a lot easier to prevent Dispelga, although trying to avoid Tortoise during stagger has gotten me killed several times.
t~ - Nov 18, 2012 12:03 pm GMTMission 45: Neochu (R:IC strategy)
Battle Time: It depends. My best was 2:42.
Battle Rating: Five Stars
Sazh: Rigels + Warrior's Wristband, Warrior's Wristband, and Energy Sash
Vanille: Healer's Staff + Diamond Bangle, Sorcerer's Mark, and Sorcerer's Mark
Snow: Umbra + Gaian Ring*, Gaian Ring*, and Warrior's Wristband

I know we all don't like R:IC (right, atari?) but there is so much payoff in this fight since chaining up to stagger is long and potentially won't work. I think including a R:IC strategy will be necessary.
My goal was to plan out a sustainable fight so that the player doesn't need to retry over and over again. Still, you can't just spam this forever in case you lower your star rating or are wasting your time because of the RNG.
Start in Tortoise and double Libra or Librascope before leaving it. Queue up five Steelguards. Once they begin to execute, switch to Attrition. You have to get full info before switching because Snow might hit with Entrench after triggering R:IC if you don't. It doesn't take very long. The Steelguards are so you can execute them quickly to protect against Screech.
Spam Imperil in Attrition and switch between the two. After five or so regular Neochu attacks, it will grunt a bit and use Screech. You should be in Tortoise prepared to use your Steelguard chain before he uses it. Don't execute Steelguard early so that you don't have to wait forever for an ability to finish when you switch paradigms. Switch immediately to Attrition after Screech. Continue with Imperil until you see Pollen. Use Dispelga and switch to Prudent Planning.
Cast Haste-Bravery on yourself and Snow and Haste-Faith on Vanille (in this order). Go back to Attrition and keep going with Imperil. Switch to Tortoise for Screech (it should be after a Pollen and four regular attacks).
After the second Screech and all the future ones, switch right to Supernatural. Repeat Haste-Faith on Vanille and then Haste-Bravery on the others. She wants Haste first so she can get Veil up in time. Switch to Attrition for more Imperil. Keep doing this until R:IC.
Don't jump the gun if R:IC triggers. You can survive essentially indefinitely so never try to beat a Pollen or a Screech before moving to damage dealing. Just let them happen. Switch to Aggression when you have Haste + offensive Augment and a regular Neochu attack just happened (you don't want to get hit by one of these with no Sen out or you will die. Interrupt Neochu with double Blitz after Snow and Vanille stagger, and switch to Cerberus during the animation so Snow can immediately Launch after your attacks. Switch between Cerberus and Aggression to keep Neochu juggled and kill it.
Some quick justification: I found that I would rather have Vanille keeping HP up than helping with R:IC since it lowers my damage dealing and also requires Heavenly Axis. Also, spamming Imperil is the way to trigger it because you have an extra chance to trigger when the debuff sticks. Blitz won't work because of Neochu's high chain resistance. I'll start working on the regular strategy next.

CWLSIV - Nov 18, 2012 1:23 pm GMTDragoon Lance makes a huge difference in my ability to chain before triggering Seed Dispersal. Defaith is not necessary on Fang (though you might as well not remove it). It's harder to survive with this party, but it is manageable.

CWLSIV - Nov 18, 2012 5:40 pm GMTMission 45: Neochu (No R:IC)
Battle Time: 19:38
Battle Rating: Five Stars
Vanille: Healer's Staff? (I accidentally used the Belladonna Wand but I'm not sure if that is correct) + Diamond Bangle, General's Belt, and Black Belt*
Fang: Dragoon Lance + Warrior's Wristband, Warrior's Wristband, and Black Belt

You might have had a lower a lower battle time than me, tiornys, but I had four extra seconds to spare instead of your measly three.
I went a little overkill on offensive accessories, I think. It really isn't that difficult to take Neochu down once you stagger it. I did use Renew right before offense to get up to green so I might just go with High HP: Power Surge on Fang. She does practically no damage with Dragoon Lance + Defaith (if you get it) so I don't think it will be an issue. A little extra breathing room would be nice. I could just go with defensive accessories but it honestly isn't that difficult to survive once you get the pattern down. Snow should probably have another defensive accessory though. I'll look into these later.
Start in Premeditation and Libra or Librascope. You'll have to fit a second Libra in before Screech if you don't use the scope. Honestly, there's a lot you can do with TP in this fight so just use the Librascope if you have one. Save it for Dispelga if you screw up and can't get Veil on your characters before Pollen or for an extra Renew if someone dies. Just save enough TP for a Renew at the end because it is worth it.
Spam Imperil in Premeditation for a round. Switch to Entourage to heal. Use Matador for most of your chaining purposes. After five attacks, the next hit will be Screech. You need to be in Tortoise and use Mediguard to block it, so don't wait until you see the ability name to switch paradigms. This is how you will die in this fight.
After Screech head back to Premeditation for a round of Imperil and switch to Protection for Curaja spam. The goal is for Fang to get Haste and Veil on everyone. She can usually get Veil on two people but sometimes she has trouble getting it on the third. It should be okay. I never lost because of it (though she might die. It didn't happen but it is possible). Switch to Entourage and remove the most important statuses (Deprotect or Imperil on Snow and Defaith on Vanille) before moving on to Matador for Imperil spam. Switch back and forth between Entourage and Matador to chain, remove status ailments, and heal up for the next Screech. Once again, there are five total moves between the two (I think. I just sort of react on instinct). Make sure Screech does not catch you by surprise.
Once you get high enough for the next cycle to stagger Neochu, spend extra time in Premeditation after Pollen for Fang to buff with Bravera and Faithra. Build up the chain duration with Imperil and approach the stagger point. Either stagger here or stagger in Matador. Use Renew to fully heal and chain Ruin to keep Neochu in the air. Some of your -ra buffs will wear off but it doesn't really matter. You'll be doing plenty of damage. Just make sure that Neochu is very close to staggering (~880%) when you start buffing -ra buffs.

CWLSIV - Nov 18, 2012 6:38 pm GMTI'm not going to fight Mission 36 without Dispelga for Fog again. Forget Veil and forget White Capes. Both are terrible by comparison. I still die a lot but that has more to do with the strategy being inconsistent than anything else. Single Med means you are screwed if they decide to go after the Med.
Why doesn't your Sazh use Barthunder, tiornys?
My Mission 42 strategy is littered with errors. I was going to check the buffing vs. debuffing thing but I got distracted.

CWLSIV - Nov 18, 2012 7:53 pm GMTR:IC!!!!
Yeah, Fang/Vanille/Snow
Calamity*/Physician's (just transformed)/Solaris (just transformed)
Witches'*x3 on all
Syn/Sab/Sen (to start and use when healing isn't necessary, but risky for the chain gauge)
Syn/Med/Sen (for buffing Haste and Shellra while keeping healthy)
Sab/Med/Sen (for seadying the gauge, keeping Slow up and staying healthy)
Mystic Tower (for chaining)
Sab/Rav/Sen (for getting that last stagger hit and controlling Deprotect [Vanille uses Imperil])
Com/Rav/Sen (for damage...may need tweaked)
The closest I got was getting one Rak close to death in two staggers. Everytime I got close to that third stagger, I usually get wiped out. If you can make it through, at least, one stagger fully buffed, maybe...
Bravera runs out very quickly, stagger time seems to end VERY quickly sometimes and needing that initial Deprotect can really screw you.

-The Lord Jesus Christ. John 14 verse 6. - Nov 18, 2012 7:54 pm GMTNice job on the 4 seconds! >.>
I see you're letting Fang do all of the buffing. Did you have any issues with Deprotect?
I assume your Neochu strategy also relies on Fang not having -strike abilities learned? Does that mean we lack a non-R:IC strategy for Neochu if Fang has learned the -strikes?
I'm not sure why Sazh doesn't Barthunder (or maybe he does, but I don't think so). I'll verify this, though.
I'd rather rely on White Capes and Mallets, with Dispelga on backup in case 2 or 3 get Fogged. The only deaths I've had in Mission 36 involved not respecting their triple hits enough. Ever since I learned to watch out for those, I have not died.
I'll have to look at your Mission 42 strategy later.
t~ - Nov 18, 2012 8:04 pm GMTYou don't have control over the healer, though. Vanille just gets hacked to pieces. Her dying doesn't mean that it is a game over, but I'd rather just retry than waste a Phoenix Down or 2 TP on her.
I can see recommending Mallets, but why would we want to recommend maxing out three copies of a terrible accessory when they can just use Dispelga instead? Sazh wasn't casting Barthunder in your video.
I'm not sure if Neochu can be beaten at Stage 8 without Random: Instant Chain if Fang knows strikes. It's unfortunate. That might not be the final answer, but it is the one that I'm coming up with.

CWLSIV - Nov 18, 2012 8:37 pm GMTMission 47: Raktavija
Battle Time: 2:58
Battle Rating: Five Stars
Fang: Calamity Spear + Witch's Bracelet*, Witch's Bracelet*, and Witch's Bracelet*
Vanille: Belladonna Wand + Witch's Bracelet*, Witch's Bracelet*, and Witch's Bracelet*
Snow: Power Circle + Witch's Bracelet*, Witch's Bracelet*, and Witch's Bracelet*

Start in Espionage and Libra. Cast Haste-Shellra on yourself, Vanille, and then Snow. Switch to Perseverance for Slow or Pain (if Slow is already inflicted and Pain isn't) unless it hasn't already used Multicast. In that case, use Smart Bomb. Generally I try to use Smart Bomb/Perseverance for three full rounds before going back to buff Haste-Shellra. Use a bit of Espionage if you don't have Imperil or just Recuperation instead. Go back for three more rounds of chaining. Continue this until you are fully buffed and Raktavija is just about staggered. This time in Recuperation you should buff Bravera, and then jump to Ruthless. Get a couple swings in to build up duration while Snow does the last of the chaining.
Once it is staggered, execute a full string immediately while Vanille inflicts Deprotect and Snow chains a little. Switch to Cerberus at the beginning of Fang's long final hit. Keep yourself adequately alternated with Snow so that it can't use Dispelga. I was able to win three times in a row, but I'm at the border of being too weak to win in one stagger. It's dangerous. Malboro Wand would help a lot, as well as a T1* weapon for Snow.

CWLSIV - Nov 18, 2012 8:38 pm GMTThe problem with writing posts in fragments is that sometimes you forget part of what you were going to say. Let me try again.
Since I usually enter the Faultwarrens low on CP from 'Toisea farming, I'd personally rather use my White Capes and Mallets. I'm fine with Dispelga being our recommendation.
Since "mastering" the fight, the only times I've had Vanille die it happened late enough that I was able to finish the fight without her in a reasonable time.
@wheresatari, if you're seeing staggers end rapidly, you're going into the stagger with too short of a chain duration. Keeping chain duration up was a problem I also had with perma-SEN.
COM/RAV/SEN is generally worse than RAV/COM/SEN. You want to force Fang to use -strikes during the stagger. Lightning's COM superiority is a lot of why I was using her over Vanille.
t~ - Nov 18, 2012 8:43 pm GMTWas that part about Deprotect and Fang buffing directed at me or at atari? Nevermind. I just noticed the times.
Deprotect was never an issue. I always had plenty of time to remove it before Screech.

CWLSIV - Nov 19, 2012 12:53 am GMTHuh.
Turns out my Sazh doesn't cast Barthunder because...he doesn't know Barthunder. Or Barfire, Barfrost, or Barwater.
Obviously, the save I picked up was from a run where I was keeping Sazh on pure Augments. I'm sure that later versions of the playthrough also had him not knowing Protect and Shell.
For our purposes, I should probably teach him the Bar-spells. That could easily impact my mission 36 strategy.... (and speaking of annoying Syn AI, I recently discovered that once Lightning learns Protect, my Adamanchelid speed farming strategy falls apart)
I'm not sure I trust fighting Raktavija without Tortoise. 3xRuinga is deadly even with all the Witch's Bracelets. If you had to make room for it, how would you tweak your paradigms?
t~ - Nov 19, 2012 2:10 pm GMTI'd probably have to lose Espionage and trade Recuperation for Supernatural. That doesn't sound all that bad, actually. The only issue is that Vanille does nothing when you go to rebuff so you have to use more Perseverance to stay alive. I guess that is mitigated by Tortoise, though.
I don't remember your Adamanchelid strategy off the top of my head, but that sounds like a good time for Auto-Protect. It won't cost you much speed to trade a defensive accessory for this. If you aren't using any defensive accessories it will slow you down but it can't be more than 5-10 seconds, right?

CWLSIV - Nov 19, 2012 4:02 pm GMTHere's a revised Mission 42 strategy:
Mission 42: Borgbear Hero + Borgbear x4
Battle Time: 1:28
Battle Rating: Five Stars
Fang: Calamity Spear + Warrior's Wristband, Warrior's Wristband, and Black Belt*
Vanille: Belladonna Wand + Sorcerer's Mark, Black Belt*, and Aurora Scarf
Sazh: Spica Defenders + Warrior's Wristband, General's Belt, and Aurora Scarf
Fang/Vanille/Sazh
Sab/Sab/Syn
Sab/Med/Syn
Com/Rav/Com
Com/Rav/Com
Com/Rav/Rav
Com/Com/Com
Start in Espionage and try to quickly cast Painga before being interrupted. Cast Painga again and shift to Evened Odds. Continue to spam Painga until you are out of danger (it shouldn't take long as many of the Borgbears will have Pain by now). Then switch back to Espionage and use Painga until Pain is inflicted on all of them. Then use Fogga until you see Vanille cast Deprotega. Once you see this, jump to Aggression and Blitz/Attack the Borgbears to kill them all. They should be staggered or close to staggered at this point so they can be defeated easily. Use the other Aggression as necessary. Once they are all dead, use Cerberus to kill the Borgbear Hero. If it is not staggered, use Relentless Assault first to stagger it.
Sazh wasn't able to fully buff himself but that doesn't really matter.

CWLSIV - Nov 19, 2012 6:10 pm GMTPlease correct me if I'm wrong.
Stage 8 is after Cid Raines and before Barthandelus II, correct?
Are Secondary Roles "allowed'?
I'm asking because I'm like five minutes away from Gran Pulse on my current playthrough, and I'm quite interested in jumping in, & I'd like to go for it on the same level as the topic while I'm doing my own shenanigans on the side.
As of now, I've only upgraded a Black Belt to *, a Tungsten Bangle to * which is now obsoleted by a clean Gold Bangle that also gives Magic Wall 5 to a particularly quirky Snow build, and a Lv12 LOLAxisBlade that's been too expensive to care about so far. I have a couple of Warrior Wristbands(name may be wrong) that give +60 Attack from many chapters ago. I'm not even close to filling out Stage 6 on Primaries, much less Stage 8 on anything, so there's a bit of grinding to be had before I can get much done.

Seven. Point. Five. - Nov 19, 2012 6:18 pm GMTYou've got Stage 8 right. We are using secondary roles. They're pretty important for the later missions.

Yes.Are Secondary Roles "allowed'?
Secondaries are a must, however, you can't neglect your primaries or you simply won't be able to win. Generally speaking, fight up to just before Dahaka, or just before Barty 2, and start from there (don't beat Barty, or stage 9 opens and strengthens your summons). It's highly suggested that you do missions 1-14 before leaving the Steppe, and all the teleportation stones throughout the chapter to save time traveling back later and getting nice CP and rewards along the way.As of now, I've only upgraded a Black Belt to *, a Tungsten Bangle to * which is now obsoleted by a clean Gold Bangle that also gives Magic Wall 5 to a particularly quirky Snow build, and a Lv12 LOLAxisBlade that's been too expensive to care about so far. Black Belts* can really help, as can Rune *. A Morale Talisman and Blesssed Talisman may also help (you should already own the Blessed, but the Morale must be made from the Hero's Amulet). You'll also want 3x Sprint Shoes. Equips really are dependant on the fight. You'll eventually want to dump that Axis Blade for the Edged Carbine or Gladius for Light (though since it has a few levels, you can use it for a little bit). If you'd like tips on the best weapons, just ask and we'll help you out.
To fund some early upgrades, your first Choco dig will net you a Gold Nugget to sell. There are two Adamanchelids to beat guarding two Gold Nuggets as well. You'll need Daze with Fang before even attempting it. tiornys has a good early strat, so ask him.
Hope this helps
Good luck, and keep trying!
