I love FFVIII too.
I'm not going to try to get you hyped; that seems like a bad idea as it builds expectations. I'll give you some advice, though. Try to get used to entering commands normally. It won't do much at the beginning of the game that Auto-battle wouldn't do for you faster, but the practice will help you later on as your command menus get larger and manual entry is becomes more valuable.
Also, note that setting up paradigms and figuring out when to use them is a fundamental piece of the battle system.

I beat the game for the first time about a week ago and I loved it, I'm doing post game content now. It's a ton of fun, but the beginning of the game is a bit slow.

2 I dont remember if I finished or not.
The fact you can hit your own team for hp gains was funny.
8 I played in all Japanese, so all I really got out of it was the gameplay.
12 I liked because it was a step back to the fantasy setting, not more crazy scifi.

8's story was the best part of that game. Especially in japanese because you get more of Ultimecia's character.
And i dont get this black sheep crap. How is 6, 7, and 8 NOT black sheep too? Because 7 is when everyone started playing them, OR what everyone eats up as the advertised "best in the series".

4 was my favorite, and yes that was the first one.
But that was where roles/classes mattered.
Tanks in the front, mages in the back. Someone dies, you needed to get them back up.
And none of this 9999 business all over the place.
Melee attacks, mages cast.
6 although good, was imo the beginning of the end.
Mages attacking for 9999, melee casting for 9999.
7 threw it out the window all together.
"Oh you just joined? take this green rock and you can shoot 9999 ultimas all over"
Now it's all quasi-steampunk future scifi.

I just finished FFXIII yesterday. Have played I, II, X and X-2 before. What you really should get hyped for, is the battle system. It is the best I've seen in a Final Fantasy. Very fast paced and a prime example of an easy to learn/hard to master battle system. Keeps you at your toes all the time.
Mind you, keep your auto-battle usage at bare minimum, manual input is much more rewarding.
And then the story, typical for FF it is very touching, and its nice to see the characters' emotional growth through the story. Lightning, for example starts off ice-cold but eventually changes very much.
And post game content is quite big, contrary to what you hear at times. There's treasure hunting with chocobo's and Cie'th stone missions (hunt down a specific monster) some of these are formidable bosses. Plus a high-level area to explore with it's own missions. And of course maxing out your stats and weapons.
And the last thing you should know, what some have complained about is that you can't quickly grind yourself to max level. The crystarium slowly opens up during the story, usually after a chapter boss. I think this is a good thing as it is impossible to get overleveled.
