The last Final Fantasy game I played was VII but I have played other RPGS since and always enjoyed them. I'm on Chapter 5 on this one and it's getting very tedious. I don't mind the linearity; Uncharted is linear but you can approach areas in different ways. FFXIII has you literally walking one path to the next battle that you might as well be on rails. So far, I've been walking from one battle to the next with a cutscene every 3 or 4 battles. Does the gameplay ever open up?

Yes, the first half of the game is very linear with (imo) boringly easy combat, but the gameplay gets MUCH better as it goes on. The world opens up a little in chapter 10, then in chapter 11 your given a huge open world to explore with tons of side quests to do. I recently beat the game, and I went back to the chapter 11 area to do post game content. I've spent 30 hours there and there are still places I haven't explored yet. If you find combat boring know the the difficulty goes up as the game goes on, which makes combat much more fun.

It arguably improves with each passing chapter. You get more and more options.
It's a cheap way to make a game improve as it goes on at the cost of the beginning being limited. But it seems to have worked.

And XII. Lame characters other than Ashe and Basch but great gameplay. But yeah, XIII was made with an action game in mind

The game gets SO MUCH better! Once you're out of the Fifth Ark, it's really fun and expansive. The storyline ties up and becomes much more interesting as well.

Its a bit different.
Having played and finished, 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, tried a little 11, 12..
I can say 13 is the oddest one out of them all.
If it didn't have final fantasy in the title I highly doubt I would give it the attention I have thus far.
