A remake of a great Final Fantasy but unfortunately the PS4 version has some issues.

For most people who played FFX 14 years ago when it was first released, it was a fantastic role playing game that took RPGs to the next level. This Final Fantasy certainly didn't appeal to everyone back in the day and it still won't now but most fans agree this was perhaps the last good entry to the Final Fantasy series and the franchise hasn't been quite the same ever since. I was never a fan of the dopey sequel that's included here but FFX is a good enough stand alone RPG where I see FFX-2 as just an added extra.

Making a remaster for this game was a great addition because anyone who owned the PS2 version in the US had the game without any special content other country versions had and I am sure many fans of FFX really wanted to be able to play the extra content. Now after 13 years, it finally came, first for the PS3 but for anyone who didn't own a PS3, obviously getting the PS4 version was the next step and it came out this year.

I am going to cut right to the chase because this game is 14 years old, I will not review the story, characters, or anything the PS2 version already had. That would be pointless, I will only talk about the new content. First things first, the US players finally get to play the FFX version with the new Sphere Grid, Dark Aeons, the super boss Penance, and other goodies. FFX-2 fans can play the Last Mission. The extra content FFX has adds a much greater challenge to the game and makes leveling up your characters more relevant. In the original version, you only had the Monster Arena. Now there is much more here and fighting the Dark Aeons and Penance really made this game's challenge that much better.

In addition to the new content, the PS4 version had some really nice graphic updates, a new re-mastered soundtrack. and much faster load times compared to the PS3 version. The difference between the PS3 and PS4 version? The PS4 version gives fans the option to play either the original soundtrack or the re-mastered soundtrack while the PS3 version just had the re-mastered soundtrack. Unfortunately, as nice of a feature as it is for the older fans to have two soundtrack choices, this new option created a music glitch in this PS4 version. Every time you are in an area, the music starts to play but when a battle pops up, the music no longer loops together anymore. When the battle is over, the area music always starts from the beginning again rather then continuing to play where it left off before the battle. This glitch makes it difficult to hear the entire song for any area unless you stand there to listen to the music. It's unfortunate because this re-master has some really good music but this glitch makes it hard to be able to listen to much of the songs at all.

There is also another pretty alarming glitch in this game. This version has a broken RNG (Random Number Generator) system which really sucks. In RPGs, each time you go into battle, the enemy selections are supposed to be random, their attack patterns are supposed to be random, and the items they drop are also supposed to be random. Now each area has the same enemy sequences, same attack patterns with the same item drops. That's not good because what are you suppose to do when you want to fight enemies for different item drops? You may have a really hard time getting a certain item that you need and you can no longer farm for them. I mean while this feature is broken, the game is certainly still playable and I'm certain many fans won't even notice it but sooner or later the die hard fans will notice. If you die at a certain area and notice you get the same enemies and they attack the same exact ways, something is up with that. Not good. Only FFX has the RNG problem, FFX-2 does not have this issue.

In conclusion, the PS4 version is only good to buy if you don't have a PS3. If you have a PS3, get that version instead. While the PS3 graphics aren't quite as good as the PS4's, that's a small price to pay considering the PS3's soundtrack and RNG is fine. All in all, it's still great to be able to play this game for the missing content from years ago but the PS4's glitches are quite a blow and it's very disappointing that Square Enix dropped the ball on that.
