An Acquired Taste?

User Rating: 9.6 | Final Fantasy X-2 PS2
Admittedly, I played FFX-2 before I even laid hands on FFX, and in some ways, I'm glad I did. In a few respects, the story was just a little confusing with references to X without having played it first, but not so much that I was completely in the dark. I thought the story was really great, and I liked that it was more lighthearted.

Now that I've played FFX, I still love X-2. I like the battle system, and I love the dress spheres, which allow you to change the 'job' of your characters. You play Yuna, Rikku, and new-comer Paine (who is NOT a Lulu wannabe!). Each lady starts with her own default dress sphere. For Yuna, it's gunner, for Rikku, it's theif, and for Paine, it's warrior, but as you progress through the game, you find new dress spheres.

The dress spheres and learning a good number of them are essential to the gameplay. There are some bosses that are more suseptible to certain skills yielded only by certain dress spheres. You can turn Yuna into a warrior and Paine into a thief if that tickles your fancy, or you can have each girl master her default dress sphere, or you can have them master a completely different dress sphere.

The girls' stats change depending on which dress sphere they have equipped. It's good to learn to use the strengths of each dress sphere, and it's adviseable to use each of them at some point.

The most interesting part of the game is the Crimson Squad side plot. This is unfolded by gathering 'crimson spheres' to peice together the story of the Crimson Squad. The spheres aren't difficult to find, and it's definitely worth it.

There is one boss in the game that is tougher than the final boss. Well, a lot of the bosses are tougher than the final boss. It's a pansy. It probably only took me an hour to beat the final boss. And you can unlock different endings depending on how much of the game you complete.

Completion points are sometimes hard to find because at times, it's something you'd never think of. It's advisable to play using a guide (for completion points if you're not a fan of walkthroughs) or a strategy guide or walkthrough to find out what you need to do to gain completion points. As the strategy guide will point out, it's possible to get 100% completion the first time you play if you have enough patience.

FFX-2 has awesome characters, great music, and the same great graphics as FFX. I'd recommend this game for girl gamers, and frankly, if you like deep, dark plots, this game isn't for you, because the tone remains lighthearted, even in more intense moments.
