Topic basically. Any quick hints or tips for someone who watched a friend play it about 10 years ago? Missables, things to do first etc.

I am sure you can find other topics just like this, but:

»Make sure you see the junctioning tutorial and understand the system.
»Don`t grind to much. Because of its unique system, levels don`t matter to much (the enemies level up as you do)
»Playing the card game can be extremely rewarding
»If you need money early on you can sell a magazine you find in the library, you can get it back latter when money is no longer an issue

Have fun playing it! (and try not to get overpowered in your first playthrough)

    Also,
    »Always check bosses draw list

There are two easy traps to fall into. First, upon hearing that leveling is technically counterproductive, you could become XP-phobic. Second, upon hearing that most ultimate weapons are available on the first disc, you'll set out to earn them. Both are a lot of work for very little benefit.

(For the first, leveling is basically a wash. Monsters do level up to match the active party, and they do get better boosts per level than your characters do, but they also give better "equipment" to even things out. It's possible to superpower yourself early in the game, in which case leveling is a straight benefit for the monsters. But you'll be grossly overpowered by then, so it doesn't matter.

For the second, upgrading your weapon basically upgrades your Strength stat by a few points. There are a couple of other benefits, but that's basically it. I'll cover what your real weapons and armor are in a moment.)

The first thing remember is to read the tutorials. FF VIII plays differently from most other RPGs out there. Assuming you can get by on levels and weapons will turn the whole thing into a painful slog. Don't do it.

Second, understand that junctions are your real equipment. Strength affects physical damage, Magic affects magical damage, Vitality is physical defense, while Spirit is magical defense. With the right abilities, you can equip magic to your stats. Stats drive just about every calculation out there. You want good magic, and you want to use it to raise your stats.

Third, experiment. The system is pointedly designed to reward a player who tries all sorts of different things. In the extreme, this can include unlimited copies of a full-party invulnerability item. Feel free to tinker around with everything available.

Finally, unless you're looking to figure this all out on your own, I suggest picking up a GF FAQ. GFs are not only fun, flashy attacks in and of themselves, they're what allow you to learn and use all the cool abilities in this game. Seriously, without a GF junctioned your characters can't even use items. You can complete the game with only a handful of mandatory ones, but it's more fun when you have them all.

(Third myth worth pointing out. People will tell you not to use GFs. There isn't actually any mechanical downside to using them. It's just that counting on them as your primary source of damage requires watching the same summon animations over and over and over. If your junctions are good, you can do comparable damage with other attacks in a small fraction of the time. Use summons when you feel like it. Use other attacks when you get bored. And know that a couple of late-game enemies punish summoning as a strategy, so do learn how to junction before that.)

I do agree with everything, except this. Don`t use FAQs or guides in your first playtrough. Even if there are some occult details that you won´t get the first time, using a FAQ can suck the joy out of the game. You don`t have to get everything on the first try, and figuring out things for yourself gives you a nice feeling.
Just explore and focus more on the story rather that getting a perfect game.

Play Triple Triad, and play it often. Triple Triad + Card Mod = An extremely overpowered party very, very early in the game.

    - Try to forget everything you thought you knew about how to be successful at RPGs. This game is different.
    - Be prepared to become very addicted to the card game. Very quickly.

Above all else... have fun and don't worry too much about the gameplay mechanics. This game is incredibly easy to break, and power through, once you get the hang of it. In addition, by following guides and really learning how to bend the system, you can become really overpowered almost straight out of the door.

    But..

I wouldn't worry too much about how everything works (within reason) and just enjoy it.

Thanks for the input guys, I really appreciate it! Ill just play blind I suppose. It should be fun.

    I have another question:

I downloaded the game and installed it, however the "bubble" to install the game is still there. Like the game is ready to play, but it still shows the install "bubble" is this because the game has 4 discs? Or is a known glitch? My FF9 did this and I installed it a few times but the bubble still showed up, so I deleted it and it played fine. Anyone know?

Clicking it just installs the game again. You can delete that with no repercussions.

As for leveling while not needed a 6x all level 100 PC's game is still way too easy assuming you have 9999 HP, Str or Magic at 255% is ALL I needed to beat most boss's including level 100 boss's.

Besides I prefer drawing Tornado Quake Regen etc at levels over 30+ instead of card playing + refining those spells which with 3x Auto Hasted PC's end of disc 1 takes no time at all (5 minutes tops) to draw all the best disc 1 spells in 1 fight.

Do not spam GF attacks. Limits and even regular attacks with proper junctions are faster and better.

Focus on teaching your GFs junction abilities early on.

Refining magic is much faster than drawing.

While refining is faster then drawing its not for the best possible spells for example you'd have to be crazy to get 100 Holy spells pre timber mission too many Krysta Cards required when you can just draw the spell from level 30+ Elnoyles way later in game.

So for the best spells to junction like Full Life Meteor etc I just drew the spells instead which takes no time at all with 3x Auto Hasted PCs.

    2 more questions:

I went to the training room before the fire cavern and I fought this Trex enemy. I put about 5-6k damage into him but he didn't die, so I ran away. Should I keep trying to kill him?

In the fire cavern you have to choose a time limit. Does it matter what time you choose? Like any rewards or anything for doing it in 20 mins?

AuronOwnzU204-Trueoskar makes himself out to be an ass for humor's sake, and he does it in a way that couldn't possibly offend any rational human being, which is an ability far from common. I didn't see what you said, Hue, but if Snuhp's getting on your case I highly doubt you could equate it to anything True says/would say.

If you run into a T-rex while you're outside with Quistis, she'll openly tell you that it's too strong and that you should run away. Proper junctions can turn it into a cakewalk, but it's still a really strong enemy for a beginner. It's not like you lose out on anything by running.

The time you select has no direct effect on anything. How much time you have left on the timer when you defeat Ifrit has a very minor and temporary effect, but it's honestly not worth thinking about on a first playthrough. You can look through the mechanics for a later playthrough, if you end up interested enough.

New advice: block all FF VIII sites on your computer until you finish the game. The first time I played this game I has a kid and I missed a lot of stuff (GF, items, cards, weapons, etc...), the final battle took me over 1 hour. It was still awesome, probably felt better than any other play trough when I was overpowered.

As for T rex's learn Card + Card mod (Quetzacoatl) turn the default Gesper Card into a Black Hole use it to have Quistis learn Degenerator and abuse the crap out of this limit for instant kills.

Only Cactaurs, Gnats, Tonberries, Lefty/Righty/Visages are immune to Degenerator it effects all other non boss's 100% of the time so if you want to do a max level game abuse it.

So Degenerator T rex's to death since Status Attack + 100 Death spells needs Siren to junction the Death spells and Status attack + Death still won't work all of the time.
