Best characters and story ever.
The character development is deep and unexpected, even for your own character, Cloud, which really added to the enjoyment of the game. I'm surprised that other RPGs don't give your character a history. I suppose that they want the character to reflect the player but, for me at least, Cloud's development gives much more depth and connection to the game. As you play, you're finding out more about yourself, who you were, who you are, and who you want to be.
The story is your typical "stop the evil organization" type. But, because it's driven by the characters, it becomes memorable. You're not just hacking monsters over and over trying to stop some vague apocalypse, you're making friends, stopping old enemies, discovering your past, falling in love, and losing friends. Unlike other games that offer predictable stories, this one offers many surprises.
The gameplay isn't that groundbreaking, but the magic system does allow for some interesting combinations and strategies.
Overall, I would highly recommend this game. It has a moving story that you'll remember. I know that I still remember everything that happened.
