I seem to be running into a rather frustrating problem: I keep losing my save files. So far it's happened twice, both around the world of ruin, both around the time I'm preparing to go to the Fanatics Tower to recruit Strago again.
I've looked into it. Don't think I have a bootleg or anything like that: was bought from a legit store (I'm tired, can't remember exactly: think it was Wal-Mart). Everything else seems to fit.
But it's frustrating, and is turning me off to playing one of my favorite games of all time. Does anyone know what's wrong?

Does it happen with other games? If so it might be a problem with your GBA's connector inside the unit. If not it could still be the GBA but less likely.
I would open the cartridge to check the board integrity and see if any of the chips, or traces, are damaged or loose. Plus the best way to check for a bootleg is to check out the board itself, may as well do it.
If you like, when I get home I can get you a picture of what my board looks like, to see if you can notice any discrepancies. Some bootlegs are done pretty well. Other than that it could just be defective, sadly. It would be unfortunate but it wouldn't be the first time. Good luck.

Known bug. Don't use your third save file. EVER.
You save on the third file, and there is a RISK of data loss. Of all files. Not a guarantee - but a risk. You're gambling every time you play.
Play it safe: Avoid slot 3.
This is the only known issue with save file loss (for legit copies).
