To me, that is a tough question. I usually go with the standard Zidane, Steiner, Vivi and Dagger.
The thing is, I train my party members in such a way so they can do 9999 damage with ease. Once I'm done training them I begin to get a little down because I want to use them all at once since they are all so good in combat.

Freya, Amarant, Zidane, Quina for me. I wanted characters with versatility that are also guaranteed damage dealers. Considering Auto-regen was leaps and bounds better than curing at the end of the game (the only part that really gets difficult imo), I never even bothered having Eiko/dagger in my party.
Vivi is my least used character by far. Never at any point would he have been beneficial in my team.

I don't really have one. I've never maxed out levels in my playthroughs of this game so the characters with the lowest levels are my team. Playing with Vivi is fun because he's not great but there are tricks to making him work great.

Zidane, Freya, Quina - and then either one of Eiko/Dagger/Vivi depending on my mood.

1. Zidane - cant change him anyway.
2. dagger - Good healer/ summoner support character.
3. stiener - Good offensive, with high HP and a tank type character
4. vivi - supports stieners offense makes them more powerful. also a good offense and supprt character.
I also like amarant but his options are very limited, so he is stuck as a physical offense char, and stiener does a lot more damage than him.
freya, i love her jump comand but it takes to long and in a boss fight i cant waste a single command due to lag.
quina, he blue magic isnt very strong against boss fights plus her offense isnt as powerful as zidanes nor stiener.
the other summoner, shes just a smaller variation of dagger.

For me it used to be Quina (tanky, robe of lords, auto life, angels snack, frog drop etc)/Freya (Easiest 9999)/Eiko (Very high damage with holy, x2 holy, utility support, phoenix chance in a pinch)/Zidane. I'd replace Zidane with Amarant if I could, unless thievery was at 9999 since chakra.
But to be honest these days I don't mind which party member I take, even Garnet who I used to ignore most of the time.

Zidane must be in all times, Freya Amrant and Steiner have the easiest ways to deal 9999 damage without watching summon/doomsday being used over and over.
So Freya Amarant and Steiner are my final PCs to use but still level 5 deathed Grand Dragons to level up all PC's to level 70 first.
That way I could set most PCs with all the anti status abilities + auto life/haste/regen ALL at once.

I use the classic Zidane Steiner Vivi Garnet team.
It sucks though because I never feel like I use the other characters enough. When I was a kid I tried swapping Steiner out for Eiko. That was stupid of me.
