Though it does feel somewhat dated, Final Fantasy IV Advance still manages to deliver an exciting RPG experience.

Gameplay: Final Fantasy IV is arguably the first "true" story driven Final Fantasy. It took story telling to the next level. And even nowadays, the storyline still remains as compelling as ever, especially for a 2D RPG. While I've definitely experienced alot better storylines in more recent RPGs, Final Fantasy IV's is still something that you shouldn't miss. Without revealing too much, basically you're a dark knight named Cecil who is helping an empire gather these special "crystals". One day you are sent to deliver something to a town. From there, the story takes a huge turn of events, and really becomes engaging. You really can't stop thinking about what's going to happen next. A great storyline.

The gameplay itself is pretty old school by RPG standards, and while this has its nostalgic value, it also feels... a bit outdated at certain parts. For example, you can't really see item descriptions during battle, so if an ally gets, for example, the Zombie status ailment, then unless you know which item from your inventory cures that, you're pretty much out of luck. There's also that small sense of a grind at certain parts, where you're not naturally a high enough level and so you must kill enemies via random encounters until you level up more. Still, in spite of a couple of minor flaws and inconveniences, Final Fantasy IV's gameplay shines practically everywhere else. The gameplay is definitely a classic.

Graphics and Sound: The graphics in the game are really cool in that old school kind of way. All of the characters are perfectly still except when they're attacking, and it's got those nostalgic animations of the character stepping forward, slashing the air a couple of times with his sword, then stepping back and doing damage. Sure it's not as detailed and crazy as more recent RPGs, but it's still fun and has managed to preserve its charm over the years. The music is pretty awesome as well, and I especially loved the boss battle music. Definitely a very stunning games from a technical standpoint, particularly the audio.

Value: Final Fantasy IV isn't exactly the longest of RPGs. The game took me around 25 hours to complete, which is definitely a good length for a game, but is still not as long as alot of the more recent installments in the series. There are a ton of side quests as well, and you could probably double that time if you wanted to see everything the game has to offer, but its been months since I beat the game and I still haven't gone back and done the side quests. So overall, Final Fantasy IV is a decent length, but there are definitely alot longer games out there.

Tilt: Overall, Final Fantasy IV Advance was a great game. Though its not exactly my favourite Final Fantasy, its still a classic and should definitely not be missed, especially by fans of the series. The game has a great storyline, classic gameplay, and excellent audio and visuals, as well as a fairly lengthy main quest. If you're a fan of RPGs and have a GBA, you should definitely give this one a chance: you won't be disappointed.
