I want to replace my Knight... but with what?

- Feb 9, 2012 8:54 pm GMTAs above.
Currently, I'm at Goldor's Mansion, and my Knight is just too slooooooooow. Seriously, he's about 10 job levels behind just because he never gets a turn in.
My other party members are a Geomancer, Thief, and White Mage. So I need something offensively-minded, perhaps a Dragoon or Viking? My Knight was previously a Monk, so I could switch back to that as well.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

~Belkar from The Order of the Stick - Feb 9, 2012 10:13 pm GMTDragoons are good, they are faster than the Knights, and can jump out of the way right when battle starts, they do decent damage and are okay on defense. (But middle of the road on Magic Defense). There is even mention in a strategy guide about making an effective "all dragoon" party, but I've never finished a game that way.
Vikings are about the same speed as Knights, very good (physical) defense and pretty good firepower. They are weaker to magic damage.
Switching back to the Monk will speed you up and let you deal hellacious damage, but defensively you'll be prone to the one hit kill.
What level is your Warrior? (Before you were a knight, I'm guessing).
While I like the "defend" option for the Knight, sometimes I'll just go through the game with a thief, a devout, and 2 warriors.
Is you Geomancer doing a lot of damage per hit yet? That would be the character I would think about switching over. If you have 3 physical based classes, and one MU, it tends to spread the damage a bit more across the board. (I just got used to losing a party member or 2 every battle, then dealing with it afterwards) - Feb 10, 2012 6:30 am GMTI never used my Knight as a Warrior, so that's JL1. As a Monk, he's JL28. I didn't think a basic warrior could be very usable since you get the Knight from the second crystal. But I'm using different classes, and just never knew how much of a slowpoke he was. I was using a Red Mage in the beginning and I kind of liked that as well.
My Geomancer is JL28 also, and he's starting to flirt with consistent 1k+ damage. Ice Storm and Ice Spears definitely do 1k, while Wind Slash is around 700-800 I would say. Refia the thief has been my star player, she's up to 20 hits and getting around 1.5k damage.
So maybe Dragoon once I get access to the next area and the good Dragon equips.

~Belkar from The Order of the Stick - Feb 10, 2012 6:33 am GMTNote: Geomancer is JL18, not 28 lol. Just checked my game file again. And his Terrain seems to be closer to around 900 for most things depending on enemy.

~Belkar from The Order of the Stick - Feb 10, 2012 9:50 am GMTThe sad thing about the Geomancer is that his "terrains" stop becoming as effective as you get closer to the end, (i.e. he "Misses alot"
. and he basically becomes bait.
Same with the Red Mage...love the versatitlity, but just not powerful enough as the enemies grow in strength. - Feb 10, 2012 10:38 am GMTperrywinkle97 posted...

Really? The only time I see my Geomancer miss is when he does a stupid insta-kill attack. Other than that, even Blinded, he hasn't missed.
I kind of want to end up with something different than my last playthrough with was Knight/Ninja/Summoner/Devout. So I was maybe thinking along the lines of Dragoon/Thief/Geomancer/Sage. I know, it's not radically different, but at least it's a change of pace.

~Belkar from The Order of the Stick - Feb 10, 2012 3:07 pm GMTYour suggested combo of players isn't a bad idea, I'd be interested to hear how it goes (If you keep those classes.
My geomancer (regardless of level) just pretty much missed every single major boss in the crystal tower and beyond., then he'd be dead, then I would waste time and resources to get them alive again, usually just to be killed in the next round of battle.
Sigh. If only you could save somewhere closer to the end before the crystal tower mayhem. I'd be a lot more adventurous in my party selection. I like to mix it up, but looked at my previous save files (I only use one per game, so I can compare where I am versus where I've been (level and party wise)), and realize my last 3 victories all had a thief and a warrior. All the battles (at the end) usually wear me out (more mentally than my actual party), so at least one session per game I am reduced to a blubbering "don't wanna go back in there, ain't gonna be no rematch".
Masochist= repeated FF3 player....
That's me, for sure, but I still love this game. - Feb 10, 2012 10:17 pm GMTI'll keep an eye on my Geomancer, and see what happens with him.
I might need a Knight though. In typical RPG fashion, Swords >>>> Everything Else. Especially if I bother to get the Ultima Weapon. Which I might, because my Thief is already JL60, and I just beat Garuda. So JL99 is definitely not out of the question.
Sage concerns me, since I'm probably going to use it as a Devout more than anything. So why not use a Devout? Other than to be different, no reason what-so-ever. I'll see what I do when I get there.

So far, so good. I'm doing some level and JL grinding for the final push into Eureka and the World of Darkness. I'm level 40 with Dragoon, Thief, Geomancer, and Devout. Yeah... I'm not really going to use black magic and non-Summoner summons are garbage, so might as well just use the Devout.
I'm playing a bit with the Ninja, but with a JL 82 Thief... I'm doing double the damage because I'm getting 28 attacks a round. Once I get the thief to JL99, I can Wi-Fi the Thief's super dagger. I might re-evaluate after Eureka because I won't be able to use 4 of the 5 end-game weapons.

~Belkar from The Order of the Stick - Feb 14, 2012 8:17 pm GMTIt sounds like you are moving along swimmingly with your party. Good luck the rest of the way, please post back here when you've won, I wanna hear about your final battle and if you keep your geomancer throughout. It is also quite refreshing to have a respectable conversation (lasting 10 posts) on gamefaqs. I'd almost given up on the notion that it was possible. Later!
- Feb 15, 2012 5:03 pm GMTWait, so you have beaten this game before right?
From your first playthrough did you ever have that Agility problem with your Knight? It might have something to do with your equipments or something.
And perry is right, the Geomancer is pretty decent at mid-game but it turns into utter crap really fast. And personally I can never handle randocrap gimmicks in games, I prefer solid and accurate damage.
The Warrior, Monk and Thief are all worth keeping if you have invested a lot of Job Levels with them.
If the Sage actually had more MP it might be worth using but it sadly doesn't. I much rather take a Devout for healing/buff any day over a Sage.
Vikings are kinda ironic, for the whole main game there utter crap thanks to the stupid mechanics of how axes and hammers work and their slow as hell.....I'm talking really slow, like a snail with Slow on it. BUT there Provoke(provided its max level) is a life saver for the Iron Giant battle.

- Feb 15, 2012 9:33 pm GMTI've gotten through Eureka and procured the final summons. Bahamut, by the way, does not Dragoons. 9999 damage ended the fight in two rounds. The bosses in Eureka weren't much harder, with all of them going down in about 3-4 rounds. Casting Protect on Refia the Thief gave her some decent survivability. So now, it's on to raiding the Crystal Tower, and grinding up to level 55 or so.
My Geomancer... it's tough. I do want to use one, because it'll be different, but when my Dragoon and Thief are hitting in 7-8k range and the Geomancer is throwing out Wind Slash for 4k at JL55, it might be time for a change.
The thing is, I don't want to use a Knight. Partially because I beat the game with one before, and partially because it's a slow class. Maybe I'll try a Dark Knight for something a little different. I used a Knight and Ninja in my last run of the game, so a Dark Knight kind of falls in the middle there.

~Belkar from The Order of the Stick - Feb 15, 2012 10:58 pm GMTWhat about a Black Belt? You should have a second Fuma Garb by now, I think.
Not that there's anything wrong with Dark Knights, of course... - Feb 16, 2012 9:16 am GMTIf you wanted to switch Jobs you should have done it earlier. As of now you can either just stick with the Crapmancer or maybe try another Ninja. It's naturally high Agility does make up for the starting lower Job Levels.
The Black Belt suffers the same problem, without Job Levels its just going to be a punching bag for the enemies.
And if you disliked the Knight a lot, you're probably hate the DK even more.....Souleater becomes useless during the endgame and there more squishy than their normal counterparts. Plus no smexy Excalibur.

I don't dislike the Knight, I just want to use different job classes. My first time through was Knight/Ninja/Summoner/Devout, so I want to use other jobs. Mostly for the challenge and to do something different.
I'm just looking at the Excaliber and Raganok in my inventory and wondering if I should be using them.

~Belkar from The Order of the Stick - Feb 20, 2012 7:58 am GMTWell, take one against the Cloud of Darkness ended badly. When your healer goes down in the first round, it's not a good sign. My Devout got slapped twice and then the Particle Beam finished him off. Gonna cool off for a few days and then try again.
My Geomancer wasn't too bad, to be honest. He's pulling off 5-6k damage attacks, which is close to the Thief and Dragoon. The final bosses all went down in under 5 rounds, and I was doing good damage on the Cloud since I acted first.
I might have to go back and look for some places where I can steal the battle item that casts Protect. I'm thinking I'm going to need 4 of them to get through the battle, since I think Protect also acts as Shell and I need all the Magic Defense I can get.

~Belkar from The Order of the Stick - Feb 21, 2012 3:54 pm GMTWell, I am glad your geomancer worked better than mine ever did..
That's the thing about being manhandled by the cloud of darkness, it doesn't exactly make you say "I want to do this again right away"
Good luck on the re-group. - Mar 3, 2012 10:20 am GMTTook about two weeks to get back to this game, since I had to decompress after the defeat, plus I needed to steal some Turtle Shells.
Turtle Shells are very effective in the final battle. Getting Protect up on everyone in the first two rounds really increases your survivability. Especially for the Devout, because combined with the class' high Magic Defense, Particle Beam did all of 500 damage. So there was very little fear of the healer going down. A couple of times, I lost a member, but nothing a Phoenix Down and Curaja combo couldn't fix.
The Geomancer was surprisingly useful as well. The one tentacle got Protect up on the Cloud of Darkness, so now the Geomancer was the heavy hitter. I think the Terrain ability bypasses a lot of defenses and immunities, so it was damaging both the Magic Immune and Physical Immune tentacle and did more damage to the CoD when Protect was active.
So yeah, the final party of Dragoon/Thief/Geomancer/Devout worked out pretty well. I think as long as you have a Devout, it doesn't matter too much what the other three people are.

~Belkar from The Order of the Stick - Mar 3, 2012 1:22 pm GMTWell, good to hear! Thanks for keeping in the loop, I was curious to see how it'd play out.
Now, off to find some turtle shells~
