Be a Pro mode could have been more

Fifa 08 doesn't really change that much of the gameplay that we found in Fifa 07, the basic controls are the same as is the basic movement of players. Things like the passing and shooting engine haven't been changed and that isn't a bad thing, the game worked well in 07 and it continues to work in this edition.

There are some improvements that don't shift the game over a huge amount, but as with most games in long running series it's the small differences that make it.

One of the best things that has been improved in Fifa 08 is the goalkeepers. In Fifa 06 and 07 the Goalies were very slow to react, making it very easy to make runs into the area and score at close range.

That has changed now, Goalkeepers respond more realisticly, meaning that it is much hard to take advantage of the spaces in the area. There is also an option in game settings that allows you to set how good the goalkeeper is, separate from the general difficulty level.

The Be a Pro mode is a little dissapointing. Essentially it's the same as a regular game only you have control over just one player. You can influence the way your team plays by calling for passes, shots and tackles but the whole mode feels a little under done, hopefully they will improve it in Fifa 09.

The new Leagues are a little odd, the Irish league? I'm a little curious as to why that was preffered over say, the J-League but it's not something that detracts from the gameplay.

All in all, Fifa 08 isn't a revolution in the Football genre but it certainly is an improvement on previous incarnations in the Fifa series.
