It's simple, it's repetitive - but it's fun!

Feeding Frenzy's Darwinian approach to pick-up-and-play gaming may be fun and refreshing, but despite it's original concept and colourful design it's simple gameplay mechanics get too stale after too short a time. It's a shame, too, because before it begins to feel repetitive Feeding Frenzy is an absolute blast - one of the most enjoyable titles available on Live Arcade to date.

It seems that many of the Live Arcade titles seem to suffer from "fun until repetitive" syndrome, with Feeding Frenzy being a prime case. Of course, that doesn't mean we can't focus on the fun a little. ;)

Sometimes frantic, sometimes frustrating, Feeding Frenzy's concept is simple: eat smaller fish to grow - and then eat the fish that were bigger than you. Thanks to this growth mechanism, the sense of scale you get in this game is fantastic. Don't get me wrong, this is no Katamari, but going from an angel fish to a killer whale in the course of two hours, seeing the fish that once appeared massive to you as tiny specks on the screen, is an absolute thrill. The developer's nailed this one down tight.

Asides from the basic "eating-to-grow-bigger" gameplay, there are a few other bits thrown in the mix that tend to help keep things fresh - from oysters that offer pearls and bonuses at the risk of being eaten to mermaids rewarding you for a perfect level. All in all, this game does just enough to keep you wanting more. Unfortunately there isn't always more to be had - the story mode can be finished in a couple of hours.

Despite the fact that it grows tired after a time, Feeding Frenzy stays fun for the 10 or 15 hours it may take you to get all of the achievements. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed the demo.
