Blair is history. Well, not exactly history - he's powerful, experienced, and altogether a sophisticated and grown-up commander. And this time around he's not you. Or you're not him.
You're a new hotshot straight out of training and wet behind the ears. You've got a lot to learn, especially because this time around you get assigned a ship and wingman instead of getting to pick them. Privileges like that, after all, are not for the new and inexperienced.
The idea behind these changes is simple: Wing Commander: Prophecy is returning to its origins.
The designers are huge fans of the entire series, but with this version they decided to resurrect some of the old-fashioned gameplay excitement. Hence the assignment of ship and wingman - being able to choose the best ship and wingman every time detracted from the suspense and adventure, the designers argued. And to further heighten the excitement, Origin is introducing a new alien race with unfamiliar battle tactics to combat (though the Kilrathi are still around). So this time around there are fewer movies and FMV sequences, numerous missions, and a very young pilot for you to control.
We went down to Origin's Austin office and chatted with the crew. Now we've got the details on the weapons, ships, and personnel hanging out in Prophecy (rest assured - just because you've got a new character doesn't mean that lots of the old favorites won't show up at various stages). We've been sworn to silence (on pain of death) about exact storyline details, but we have some terrific mission info in its stead.
Wing Commander: Prophecy purports to have the best of what made past Wing Commanders hits: technological innovations and pre-FMV gameplay. Read on to get an idea of just how close Origin will come when the game is released December 15.
