Who Will You Roll As in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning?

Check out some awesome gameplay of three midgame characters with very different combat styles.

One of the toughest decisions in gaming, and real life come to think of it, is deciding who you want to be. Unlike life, however, games let you level up, unlocking access to skill trees, perks, and kickass abilities, all of which help shape your ultimate character. (You suck, reality.)

With the release of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning on the horizon, many a role-playing game fan will be readying up for a new fantasy adventure and pondering this very decision. We can't decide for you, but we can get your brains whirring and whet your appetite with some gameplay of three midgame characters with very different combat styles: the sage, the ranger, and the warrior.

So what do you think? Which type of character do you plan to roll as when the game hits shelves in early February? Let us know in the comments.

The graphics of this game aren't bad, they're just the concept art style taken by the developers; didn't anyone noticed the lights falling when you venture deeper into the forests? And what about all the environmental colors?! Try to imagine it with another engine/graphics, or should I say, another art direction. Some of us loved the "Fable" concept. it's a style. It's not a "Battlefield 3 vs. MW3 graphic war" game. it's only a game by itself, trying to please us with something fun and simple. Why you play video games after all? If it is to please your eyes by melting your video cards, or to light up your red lights of death, rather than entertaining yourself with a good art direction and gameplay, sorry but... You're playing video games very wrong...

I am just a casual gamer (casual PC user) that I like to play games from time to time. My point is that it might be a perfect game for people used with consoles, cand I cand respect that, but I am just not used and not inclined for that kind of gameplay style. In the same category I put the Final Fantasy seriest, which i consider an absolute work of gaming art but i'm still not going to play it.

On the other hand, the graphic engine is one of the best i've played on, I could play at maximum settings on a 3 year old laptop.

Probably going to end up with a Sage my first run through. Eventually I plan on doing the sage/ranger hybrid. Meh, who are we kidding. Everyone playing the game is going to try all of the choices, am I right?

ppl on here give skyrim to much credit... and since wen was a combo based fighting system a bad thing? ud think ppl would be happy about some depth in the combat system
and about the art style, not everything has to be super realistic, its refreshing to see them use a cartoony art style instead of trying to be gritty and visceral like every other game today

Geez people, why all the hate! I was a PS player 1st then I started to play PC games. 90% of the time I play on the PC, but sometimes I go for the controller instead of the keyboard, because its just better! U see some of us are glad for us gamers and whatever u play on is cool with us!!

I almost always go with a warrior in games like this, and I probably will do the same here, although I will probably focus a bit on magic as well like I did in Skyrim.

Having played through the demo a few times, I really liked the finesse style of using the twin daggers and the bow, as well as the might-focused longsword and other weapons, so perhaps a might/finesse build for myself? Though the sorcery-based skills are good as well...so much choice!

On the console vs PC discussion, how's that drag and drop on the controller working out for you ? Or the zoom in and out feature not working ? Or the shaky hands you have from too much vibes ? Think about this How many PC games get ported to console ... none ? Maybe a few or a lot go find out, but I'm sure the console ports to PC are in the hundreds and thousands more, hell I can even play SNES on the computer. Also who cares about graphics if the game is made for you to enjoy the content instead of admiring the bloody mountains in the distance. Dungeon siege 2 (some will say a cheap rip off Diablo) was a wonderful game, gameplay was simple, story was interesting with a twist and you actually had numbers, which helped the PEOPLE that COULD do MATH. Its not that games are made dumb they are just dumbed down for the ''casual" gamers and console wizards.

First lets remind everyone this game is brought to you by EA corporation, famous for get rich quick schemes and buying off the competition, smashing their useless logo on top and forcing them to be slaves that will do what EA says and not what a specialist in game making thinks is right. In one word EA.

Now whichever poor soul complains about graphics textures and lack of animation is by far a "casual" gamer. If you want gloss go play Maple Story. RPGs are by default the offspring of the old D&D board game, dungeons, dragons, undead, liches, narrow skilled specification dependent on how you throw your dice. None of this softcore mix and match, a knight is a knight a mage is a mage, anything else is a jack of all trades, can do everything , but useless against a well made villain. Anything else outside these guidelines brought to the RPG genre is a GMO, sometimes nice, sometimes horrible. If it wasn't for ME2 we'd all still have mute characters, which was fine coss your imagination could fill in the voice of YOUR character, but I guess to have imagination today is very very very hard.

before shoving a controler into a pc gamer face understand this , I hate controlers I am sick of a controlers (I think when I was 15 years old I used my last controler), why would I use a controler when my m+kb are far better than ...10 $ U say, expensive for a 2 inch plastic thing ..............Yah the Pc guy really exagerated

One thing to say the combat is better than Skyrim's , the voice acting is better than Skyrim's and the story (even the first 3 seconds because Skyrim has no story ) is better than skyrim's............Figure out that you maniac Skyrim fanatical fans ........The camera somethimes is acting strange, no a controler isn't better or worst in this game than a kb+m, the graphics aren't that bad but cartoony, it si a RPG with skills choices and crap, the stealth sistems works amazingly well, the company that made the game didn't deny that they used things that were done before and by all the games, the demo had some bugs, the combat is fluid and again better than Skyrim's (I don't know why everybody is comparing this game with that one when last year were released better rpg and games than Skyrim) .......Overal a great game for PC Console and PS3...

Regarding my personal definition of fun: Gameplay > Storytelling > Graphics. If your fun value is dependent on good graphics, I honestly pity you. Graphics are a nice bonus -- nothing more.
Within gameplay, the combat system is one of the most core pillars of the experience. In that regard, this game is a resounding triumph and Skyrim is a pretty huge disappointment. In Skyrim, I always felt like I was just pushing the button to swing my sword -- whiffing at air. It honestly felt a lot like swinging a sword in Minecraft.
Yes, I just criticized Skyrim, one of the most sacred cows of the Western masses. Deal with it. If this game has storytelling and content rivaling that of any Elder Scrolls game, but with a far better combat system, then it deserves a better score than Skyrim.

This game intrigues the heck out of me, after playing the demo i could totally see myself investing a crazy amount of time with the game. My main interest is story and this looks like a very solid experience; the thing is UFC 3 and ME3 are right around the corner so i might have to wait on this bad boy.

First off the visual style and graphics are sub-par even for a console game, but IMO the story and voice acting aren't very good either. I personally hate combo-based combat systems so take what you will from that. As for the controller, why should I as a primarily PC gamer (I do have an XBox 360) spend \$60 on a PC game when the controls are not even close to optimized for it? What you're saying is they were to lazy/cheap to do anything other than port the controls to KB/M, but I should just suck it up and treat it like a console game? Pass, there are better games I can spend my time/money on.

Not until recently anyway. thats why i want it to do well. i played the demo... many times in fact. i can see the fun lasting me a very good while. yeah i had some problems with the demo too but it seemed to work better when not connected to the internet. Anyways the demo was an early build given to a third party company or something like that so dont think its the final product

The game did not like my Logitech Rumble pad 2, and it expects me to pickup a 360 controller (not one of my favorite controllers). It seemed like an ok game, but nothing great from playing through the demo. I'll wait till the GOTY version comes out. Besides, I'm pulling back on my gaming pre-orders. Too many games I pre-ordered turned out to be a waste of my money. This one looks like one of those. Plus, with the obvious respect EA has for its customers with the online pass. That definitely makes it an avoid until I can get it from the bargain bin. Luckily for EA, Mass Effect 3 is a Bioware game and one of my favorite series or I would cancel my pre-order of that one.

Yeah it's pretty silly. I've used a PC as my gaming platform of choice many times over the years, but right now I just don't have the money in my budget for a gaming PC, so I use an xbox instead. To me it's all the same. Games are games, and I'm a gamer so it's all good as far as I'm concerned. Platform nuts are crazy in general, but PC elitists are quite possibly the worst.

    @sorcererxx12
The PC version does support an xbox controller I believe, and really this is console-style action so that's going to be the best way to play. You can get an off brand xbox controller for \$10, so you might want to consider it (or you could borrow one if you have a friend with one to spare). I also fully expect the non-demo version of the game to have a greater suite of PC features (graphic options etc.). Just keep all that in mind before you completely right this game off (unless you are just flat-out opposed to using a game controller, no matter what).

I played the PC demo and was kinda dissapointing. It is a console game with buttons turned into keys and with poor inventory system. For the controls i can understand that this won't be a problem for console gamers, but as I only own a PC, it's a deal breaker for me.
I was really looking for an RPG like this to replace my thirst for GW2, but sadly i'll be waiting on dry for the next 6 to 12 months.

I'm a PC Gamer only, but I must agree with you; it's just DISGUSTING how some PC players just insist in making our community look so bad. If it's not exclusivity, some of us complain about graphics and forget about the main feature: the FUN.

I am looking to see how far I can push the game and what limits there are when I steal everything, and kill everyone I can, so maybe a rogue class. Once I see how the game plays out and reacts to a player that does not want to play by the rules then I will make another. This second character will be a mage/rogue hybrid, using range attacks mostly.

After playing the demo, I'm most definitely going to pass on this one. Nothing new it seems. Combat will clearly have variety but I don't know…just not feeling this game. Not to mention as soon as I got out of the first section of the demo, the ground textures werent filled in. Just ridiculously long shades of brown for the road, grass. I played this demo on two separate occasions and ran into the texture issue.

I am not going to mention anything about the class that I am going to take because I am not really interested in playing this game.

However, I would tell you the reason for that other kind of interest that I have in this game anyway, and I would you tell that with just one word:

    Hype.

To tell you the truth after playing the demo I am not at all impressed by this game. It just feels like they took WoW made it single-player and added a DMC style combat system (combo-based systems annoy the crap out of me). Personally I am not a fan of the visual style or the story, the voice acting was also sub-par IMO. Not on my play list, I'll stick with Skyrim.
