What is it about Star Wars that keeps us coming back for more? It has been more than 20 years since Episode IV was released, but our collective interest in all things Star Wars has continued almost unabated.
Over the years, Star Wars has spawned toys, posters, action figures, LEGO sets, calendars, beach towels, collector cups, board games, and last, but certainly not least... video games.
Who didn't watch the Star Wars Trilogy without wishing he could fly an X-Wing through the Death Star trenches just like Luke Skywalker? Or race a speeder bike through the forest moon of Endor? Or fight in a one-on-one lightsaber duel with Darth Vader?
Star Wars video games have let us do all these things. They let us become active participants in the movies we know so well. But they have also done something more.
Star Wars video games have expanded the Star Wars universe with new characters, storylines, and ideas. Masters of Teras Kasi put Star Wars characters in the middle of a fighting game. Shadows of the Empire filled in the story between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Rogue Squadron gave us insight into the adventures of rebels before they battled AT-ATs on Hoth.
Star Wars has been the inspiration for more than 20 games on 14 different platforms, an amazing track record that illustrates the depth, creativity, and staying power of George Lucas' original creation.
And there is more to come.
The release of The Phantom Menace marks the beginning of a new era of Star Wars video games. LucasArts announced it will stop releasing games based on the original trilogy for an indefinite period, with the focus turning to Episodes I, II, and III. This crossroads seems like the perfect time to take a look back at the rich history of Star Wars video games.
May the Force be with you.
